Lexus Lanes (1 Viewer)

Does anyone live in a city that has these variable toll lanes? They want to put one in Tampa, and it's obviously getting a good amount of opposition.

So like if you drive a lexus, you pay more?

Here, the toll varies based on the time. At 10 am everyday it goes down a buck and you see a bunch of people pull over at 9:55 to wait it out. It's so dumb.

They have them in Atlanta (assuming you're talking about a traffic lane with a fee that varies with the level of traffic.)

Big fan! Zip right past all the riffraff :drive:

They pull over on the interstate?

Yeah they charge various amounts to drive between certain points based on traffic volume. If there's no traffic, it's like 8 cents to go 3 miles, but at peak rush hour the trip between those two checkpoints goes way up. We have it Atlanta and they're expanding it along with the new Braves stadium construction.

They do this in Dallas. None of it is on my commute, but it's generally hated by everyone. I mean everyone.

Primary reason for the hate is the price of it goes up when the traffic is bad rather than going down to help drive people to the nearly vacant lanes.

I guess the objective is to make money rather than relieve traffic congestion. IMO, if the room is there to add another lane, then just add another lane for everybody.

In Tampa it's pretty much a lock to go in, they are just going through formalities by having public meetings. They already have widened much of 275 to have an enormous shoulder, so when it gets approved it will be easy to convert.

They are great when the company is paying them. I paid $8 to drive 7 miles in Orange County. Saved me 40 minutes.

In California, people aren't even using the lanes and despite being 'private investment' the government is paying money to maintain them:

Far from being a model of private enterprise providing a service "at no cost to taxpayers," the toll roads were given a $151 million taxpayer subsidy during construction, Caltrans has spent $122 million on capital improvements for the toll roads -- money that is diverted from use on general purpose lanes. Caltrans kicks in up to $15 million per year in routine maintenance. The road also enjoys a tax on developers and the benefit of an anti-competition agreement that prevents improvements to nearby freeways. The report estimates the total subsidy value at $1.7 billion.

I-4 in Orlando just started a multi- year construction project to add these types of toll lanes, so it's headed your way. It will still have free lanes, but based on time of day, you can choose to pay to drive in the toll lanes.

The government gets bent over again. I need to own a toll road. Good gig. Officials should be in prison for making these deals. Turrible.
