Lions anticipate return of the Brandon Pettigrew they saw in November

ALLEN PARK - There are certain Detroit Lions draft picks who get forever linked to other players who were selected just behind them. Terry Fair and Randy Moss. Kalimba Edwards and Clinton Portis.

More often than not, the Lions come out on the short end of the stick. And now we have Brandon Pettigrew and Michael Oher. The Lions took Matthew Stafford with their first overall pick last season and they also had the 20th overall pick. While there were a lot of folks who wanted Detroit to take Mississippi tackle Michael Oher - he of "The Blind Side'' fame - the Lions surprised many by selecting Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew.

After one year, the Lions are on the short end of the stick again. But this battle isn't over yet.

Oher went 23rd overall to the Baltimore Ravens, where he was a starter at right tackle and is being groomed to be the starter on the left side. (Interestingly, not many people beefed about Detroit passing on Florida receiver Percy Harvin. Drafted 22nd by the Vikings, Harvin was the Offensive Rookie of the Year but nobody's going to complain about NOT taking a receiver).

Pettigrew missed a lot of training camp with leg and groin injuries, but returned to start the first 11 games. He was lost for the season with a knee injury during the Thanksgiving Day game - just four days after making the game-winning touchdown catch in the thriller against the Cleveland Browns.

Pettigrew started the season slowly and didn't look comfortable in the passing game. While his blocking was good, he wasn't making himself a target for Stafford. It hit a low point in the middle of the season when, in a three-game span, Pettigrew had just four catches for 38 yards.

In the next three games, though, Pettigrew's production spiked. He had 15 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns and was clearly a growing force in the passing game. And then Thanksgiving arrived and his development has been sidetracked until August. Or September.

Pettigrew has looked good in off-season workouts but isn't close to being cleared for contact. The Lions will likely put him on the Physically Unable to Perform list for the start of training camp and then assess his rehab before activating him. The addition of veteran Tony Scheffler gives the Lions a little cushion, but they're planning to run a lot of two-tight end formations in their offense so they'll want Pettigrew back as soon as possible.

Blocking was the one part of Pettigrew's game that was unquestioned coming out of college. He has the size, the feet and the attitude needed to be effective in the running game. The issue is going to be whether the knee injury robbed him of any speed and how long it'll take to get back where he was in November of last year.

If Pettigrew starts the season on the PUP list and misses the first six weeks, then Scheffler is the best option in redraft leagues for fantasy GMs looking towards a Lions TE

Scheffler is a horrible blocker, but he does have some decent receiving talent - assuming he can be a little more consistent.

Dynasty owners may want to target Pettigrew as bit of a buy low type of candidate.

Good news for the Lions and Pettigrew

But help me out on this: this is the same guy that was compared to Bubba Franks pre-draft last season? He seems more like a blocker than an offensive threat. I thought the acquisition of Scheffler indicated that they both like him as a blocker and don't see him as a pass-catcher. Is there something I'm missing for long-term fantasy value for leagues that don't give points for blocking?

His blocking is definately a stronger atribute then his receiving skills - but he has untapped potential to be much better and well rounded as a player then perhaps initally thought, IMHO:

Scheffler was signed as insurance for the Lions, especially since Pettigrew will be very likely starting the season on the PUP list. Scheffler looks more like a stop-gap player who will hold the fort down until Pettigrew is back, and fully ready to go. Scheffler is a terrible blocker, and despite his occasional brilliance in pass catching - he is very inconsistent and makes mental mistakes. I am of the opinion that Pettigrew is the much better dynasty asset to have, and if you can acquire him without having to give a lot up for him, then look into it, as that is the definition of value. I know of a recent trade in one of my leagues where Pettigrew was traded for Martellus Bennett (the Witten owner wanted Bennett) and a 4th round pick in the upcoming rookie draft. The Lions have an emerging and talented passing game, and Pettigrew has significant potential to rise in value over the next few years.

That was the talk before the season, but Pettigrew was really coming on when he got hurt. He's not going to be Gates, but I think he is better than Franks as well. I could see Chris Cooley type production from him in the future if he is healthy.

Hmm something to think about for me. His cost still seems pretty high.

Why does he remind me of Erron Kinney?

3. The Lions picked up Tony Scheffler and also have 2nd year TE Brandon Pettigrew. I was pretty high on Pettigrew until his injury and now comes Scheffler. Do you see the two canceling each other out for fantasy or will Pettigrew still be hobbled while Scheffler gets a chance to take over?

This is a good question, and the answer is that they’ll each have a valuable role. Scott Linehan loves to toy with 2-TE sets, because of the flexibility. Especially on third downs, he likes to use an athletic TE as a mismatch on weakside linebackers–and he likes to motion them out wide to flummox cornerbacks as well. I blogged extensively about how the Concussion-induced Retirement of Longtime Role Player Casey Fitzsimmons was going to be a much greater on-field loss than anyone realized, because of his ability to play that role. Just four days later, the Lions traded for Scheffler.

Pettigrew is a very big, powerful athlete with soft hands, but he is not a Gonzalezesque downfield threat. He’s going to be a machine on third downs and in the red zone–but splitting him out wide, to match up against a starting cornerback? I don’t see that happening. Scheffler, however, has that kind of speed, and the Lions will use it. The two won’t cancel each other out, per se; they’ll compliment each other. That said, I do think Pettigrew’s totals would have been higher if Scheffler hadn’t come around–and Scheffler would have been a better producer on a team without Pettigrew.

Fantasy-wise, presuming Pettigrew is 100% at the start of the season, I see a roughly equal split of targets–maybe 60/40 Pettigrew. I expect more yards-per-catch for Scheffler, and more TDs for Pettigrew, but it won’t be a huge disparity. Given the limited number of passes to go around, I don’t think either will be a dominant fantasy TE. But they’ll both be bargains, and Pettigrew could be a steal in TE-mandatory leagues.

He was dropped sometime around the 3rd round during one of my rookie/free agent drafts. I tried to move up numerous times to grab him, but no luck. Didn't matter as I ended up drafting him in the middle of the 4th round... can't remember the exact pick, but you get my point.
