live Grateful Dead (2 Viewers)

tough losing Bill Walton - loved seeing him tower over the crows at shows so into the music. Personified a true dead head IMO.

Anyone here going to the Vegas Sphere shows? On deck for mid June - taking my 22 yr old to his 1st show of any Dead related incarnation....never listened to any Dead before - should be a great experience

They just added two more weekends of shows. I really don't have any excuse not to go, other than the million other things I already have going on this summer.

Unless you were behind him...

My flight leaves for Vegas tomorrow morning. I have tickets for the Thursday and Friday shows this week.

Went to opening week. Great 3 show run. Had a blast. They're playing great. Sphere was cool but it is a different experience. I was in the front of the 100's for the 3 shows and it was great. Not sure I'd like being up in 300's or 400's so far from the band. As cool as the visual experience was, the sound is where the Sphere shined for me. Probably the best sounding Dead shows I've ever been too. Super crispy, almost like wearing headphones.

By night 3 I was a little distracted by some of the visuals and kind of didn't like that the entire venue would be lit up like a daytime show at times. Preferred the space scenes and simple dark graphics. Super comfortable in the Sphere. Felt like a cool breeze in there. Must have a hell of a HVAC system in there too as it was fresh and cool for all 3 nights.

Really want to go back in August but glad I went in May when it was only 90 degrees. Heard it's going to be 115 this weekend in Vegas.

First show I sat in 307 and it was fantastic...right in the middle of everything. Sound was great. Visuals were stunning. I could see the band just fine. They were a little far, but I have easily been further away at other venues. 2nd show I sat in 201. It was much closer to the band which was cool, but the visuals were not quite as good. 201 is way off to the left side of the venue. There was some distortion for some of the visual effects which made it a little less awe inspiring, but still decent. I would recommend to anyone going to try to get as centered as you can in the arena for the best experience. And you are right about a ridiculous HVAC system. Was triple digits outside, but cool as a cucumber inside, and as you said there was a gentle breeze throughout the venue. The air was always moving.

Thx for the reviews - headin out there next week for the Thurs show. Picked up 2 seats in section 208 2d row in the section - a bit off to the side but not too far from center.

Its my oldest kid's 1st show - hes never listened to the Dead and its really not his kind of music but he's going with me so Im not solo which is nice. Who knows, maybe he gets blown away and becomes a fan!

On the list is Sphere experience on night one to get a feel for the venue - heard its like Soarin on steroids. Comedy show night 2 and then the Dead on night 3. Im hoping he likes it so much we end up going on Friday as well but not pushing it as very appreciative hes going at all.

Staying at the Venetian and its going to be 109 degrees so mostly lookin at indoor stuff and the pool - besides shakedown and the exhibit at the Venetian - any other things high on the list? did anyone use the walkway from Venetian to the Sphere? I like that its indoor but not sure how long I should give to get to seats.

Awesome. Have fun! We were in 108 and I was concrened they might be a bit too off to the side, but it was actually awesome. Your seats should be incredible. I really liked the slight angle so we could see not only the visuals behind the band but had a great view of the screen as it wrapped around. No visual distortion at all.

The Venetian was pimp. I had never been there before. Great to just check in, start the party and not worry about driving anywhere. Super convenient to get to the show. Heads everywhere, which was cool. The pools were really nice. There is a smaller pool on the 10th floor which was our favorite one. A bit more chill and had some shade. Casino was a party 24/7.

Some things we learned from our trip that may be useful:

There is a Walgreens close by. Maybe a 10-15 minute walk. We stocked up on waters, gatorades, snacks and alchohol day 1. Saved us a ton of money.

There is a sanitized version of Shakedown at the Tuscany about a mile away. It was outside and walkable when we were there in May. Heard it's moved inside the Tuscany now and might be a bit tougher of a walk in the heat, but I thought it was worth checkin out. Nothing like the real thing but better than nothing.

We walked all over the Venetian our 3 days there, which is huge. We ended up in the Grand Canal Shoppes one day, which is basically a mall, and stumbled onto the "Animazing Gallery" which had an exhibit of Grateful Dead art which was impressive. No price tags, so I assumed really expensive stuff; art from Stanley Mouse, Mickey, and photos by Jay Blakesberg and Chole Weir. Was a cool free thing to do.

The Dead Forever Experience in the Venetian was also worth checking out. It's inside between the Venetian and Palazo on the ground floor. Some great historical photos and Mickey had a display of his artwork, which was cool. Merch like posters and shirts. The Grateful Dead Channel also broadcasts from there and we got to see Steve Parish do his thing. I think his show is on Thursday.

Getting into the Sphere on show nights was easier than I thought it would be. The walkway was the way to go IMO. It was blocked one night due to a convention going on but they rerouted everyone and it went smoothly. We would walk over around 6:30 and were in our seats by 7. Breezed in Thursday and Friday. Saturday was a bit of a line but it moved fast. The Sphere allows you to bring in an empty Nalgene water bottle, which was great. I just filled that sucker up each night from a fountain and was set. If you have to go to the bathroom, it's well worth missing a few minutes of a tune rather than waiting for the end of a set. I got in and out and didn't feel like I missed anything. They are packed at set breaks. Shows seemed to start right at 7:35 ish and was over around 11 each night.

Enjoy!!

awesome stuff! Thx for the info - will definite use this!

So finally getting around to posting about my Sphere trip - in short it was epic but anyone interested here is a pretty detailed review/log I put together that has some good info without any real spoilers. Tried to keep it vague - sorry it ended up so long:

Stayed at the Venetian - Pallazo Tower which is newer, close to the walkway and sprung for a few dollars extra to get a sphere view room which we loved

Tues - Night 1 we landed in on Tues around 3pm - airport very close (15 min) - while in the air the Venetian had us checked in so we only needed to wait in the short key line (if you go make sure to check in online). Quick uber to the dispensary - all the cab drivers push Planet 13. I was warned its an overpriced tourist trap. We hit Reef. No frills but got a disposable vape pen for cheap and right across from Liquor World for booze and snack - both which saved us a ton as hotel is pricey. Also be aware only mini bar fridges - could barely fit 2 waters in so ice a must and id get a cooler for the room. Venetian has promotion for new players - get a card and once you hit 50 pts you spin a wheel and get anywhere from $20 to $1,000 credits - I got $20 but my son got $50. Mostly need to use slots but once you have winnings you can cash out.

Had dinner at Tao which was our priciest meal but both loved - then we went to the Sphere Experience Postcards from Earth show. It was great because it gave us a dry run as I purchased the same seats I had for the show - sec 208 (just a bit to the right) and row 8 (which is actually row 2 for some reason). We learned the walkway (about 15 minutes) - how to get in (very quick) and then hung out in the lobby for 30 minutes where they had a few AI robot exhibits which was very cool. The lobby is decked out in futuristic stuff and easily could have spent some more time there but wanted to get to our seats.

It was like a football stadium cut in half facing a screen. from 208 you can easily look down and see the band set up and the entire screen. my thoughts on other sections: floor seemed too intense for me. id want to sit. 100s were good but be careful - theres overhangs about halfway back which blocks a lot of the screens. Def avoid. 300s and 400s are not bad at all but they are high with a severe incline so if you tend to get vertigo or anxiety with heights/edges id avoid. Also avoid extreme corners of any section - dont have to pay extra for exact middle - but dont end up on the corner - you want it to be around you.

The show started as just a huge screen and we were like meh - then about 5 minutes in the lid blew off. It was like Soarin except on triple steroids. Story was a bit preachy but cool. It used all the senses. sound booming, wind in face, screen just about all around you. Went for just under an hour and we were blown away. Definitely a must add - however they use the day before the show to set up so youll have to get there 2 days early.

Wed - Night 2 - Pools are fantastic at Pollazzo . there for hours in the 100 degrees. Dinner at Brera - its right in the shops which is set up like an Italian cafe. Food was good not great. We then hit Piff the Magic Dragon show at the Flamingo. We liked him on americas Got Talent and the show was intimate, reasonable and funny. He also did a meet and greet for the entire audience with Mr. Piffles. good area to casino hop.

Thurs - night 3 - We went to Shakedown at the Tuscany. No ice cold balloons and a bit corporate but the AC was worth it. Lots of col vendors. Picked up some great unique stuff. Bit pricey as expected and most only take case so be aware. Extra bonus - Tuscany is having a crazy casino promotion for new players. get a card and you get $50 per day for 3 days as long as you show you play something. You can only pocket winnings but it paid for our ubers and a T shirt.

We had a quick dinner at the Lobster counter - had a solid lobster roll and all was under $100 - but most important it was quick service. People I knew went to sit down dining and it was slow and they missed the opener.

walkaway was a godsend in the AC - full of dead fans so it was a fun walk. Lots of miracles sought. Staff was one of the friendliest I ever encountered. Light security walking in - I was able to get in my vape and 2 airplane bourbon bottles.

Show started 7:35 prompt - just like the other show it started very slow then blew the place apart. It was like nothing I ever experienced. I went easy on the vape and booze cause you could easily green out in that scene. Mix of people sitting and standing - you could do either and have a great view of the scene. 1st set was amazing - faves was the Ramble on Rose and Jack Straw.

and 2d set absolutely crushed it - if I had to pick one Scarlet with the Sphere experience was my fave. Instead of going to the bathroom during drums/space it was much watch as the sphere grooved to it with crazy graphics all around you. Nice mix of tunes and even a new one with Bobby singing Dylan's I remember you which was haunting. Gotta admit Bobby looking and sounding his age - but JM was absolutely shredding. I wasnt a huge fan of JM but he has won me over and then some. Hes the future and its in good hands.

Only negatives were the prices of booze which was expected and the chompers. You get chatty people in regular shows but theres a lot of vegas convention non dead fans there for the sphere and they dont know the tunes so they are just chatting away. the upside was as the night went on the sound got louder so it drowned them out.

It was my sons 1st show. He doesnt now any dead tunes (except for obviously what he catches me playing) but he had a great experience. We went only one pm for a few reasons. Mainly he wanted to only go once and I was happy to go with him so I was cool with it. Also Ive read they repeat a lot of the graphics/experience so the best is the 1st time and I kind of wanted to keep on that high. Im still processing it - I have a ton of vids and people are blown away. I try not to share to much with Dead fans and if you are even thinking of going avoid any spoilers as going in fresh is the best.

I have a feeling they will be doing this residency every year - its too easy. keeps them from touring too much, especially for the older fellas and its still an awesome experience. Id go back again definitely.

Last pm on Fri we had dinner at Lavalo which was very good but slow so happy we werent going to the show! Gambled, drank and had a blast.

Flew out Sat midday and decompressed....until I felt awful and went to Immed care and popped for Flu. They call it Wook or festival flu. guess it was a good change with all those people indoor. My 22 yr old dodged it so just the old man. Rough few days to say the least but finally turning the tide.

Sorry how long this turned out - I wanted to give a detail review both to keep my memory and help anyone else going as much as all the advice I got helped me (thx ericttspikes) have the best experience.

Few weeks left - anyone on the fence take my advice and make it happen! Memory for life! Nothing left to do but smile smile smile!

Also, do I need to get tickets right when they go on sale to avoid having to do secondary market?

can only speak of the last run but most werent happy with the hotel/tix pkgs - very pricey. obviously face tix are great if you can get em but tough to get exact location you want. I got great tix on secondary mkt - stub hub - for not too crazy. Liked to be able to pick out exact location. I booked hotel and tix about 2 months prior - expensive but not crazy. Def worth it to go at least once! Hit me up if anyone wants more info or check out my crazy long review post above!

@Kiddnets @Galileo @ericttspikes and anyone else. What is best strategy for tickets? Presale, general sale, or secondary market? I assume these sphere shows are a magnet for scalpers and general sale will be gone early but we haven't finalized on a weekend yet.

I don't know what is best, but we did presale last round. We had 4 people online in queues and managed to get 300 level and 200 level seats for the 2 shows we targeted. I didn't really look at the secondary market since we were set.

Based on my experience last year, Ticketmaster will try to create FOMO by offering mostly platinum tickets (scalping their own tix) and sell mostly sides and obstructed for regular prices in these early onsales. They’ll want to push buyers to pay as much as possible, even to the Vibee packages which are a complete rip off. They own Vibee too.

I’d say poke around and if you see what you want for face grab em but don’t panic buy. I seem to remember getting GA was fairly easy. You can’t scalp those so maybe brokers stayed away from them. I think if you needed to sell them you can offer them for face on the TM site. I didn’t do GA last year but would definitely consider it this time.

I’m going to try to make it in April and secured a cheap room at Tuscany which is off strip about 15 minute walk to the Sphere. It’s where Shakedown is and they had good aftershows. I’m probably gonna punt on show tix until a month before. I’m sure they’ll fake sell out but last year around 30 days out they released tons of the best seats for face. I bought the rip off package and was pissed seeing better seats offered. I wanna stay flexible this year. Cashortrade had a lot of people selling tix below face too.

One difference this year is they’ve said only these 18 Sphere shows vs 30 last year. So I suppose demand could be higher but you can always find tix to Vegas shows in my experience. My gut also feels like GD60 shows are happening in at least Chicago this summer and maybe SF too. Expecting a Feb announcement if that happens. That would free up Sphere tix.

Great advice so far - if you can get the section/location you want jump on the pre-sale - I really wanted 2d level near the middle - I had to go to secondary mkt and after initial inflation it went down to a much better number so be patient. As this is the 2d rd I imagine the prices will be much more reasonable this time around.

I snagged a good room in the Venetian with Sphere view only a few weeks before going so there will be lots of options depending on your price range. Definitely hit Shakedown if you have the time - great experience!

Thanks. Two questions on this. What do you mean GA can't be resold? Also, is the GA all standing? My plan would be to stand the entire show, but not sure I'd want to take an occasional seat to take in all the visuals.

Do people in the seated sections sit or stand/dance?

Not sure on resale of Ga but GA all standing. Speaking for myself as an older guy of 50ish - I liked having a seat. Lots of standing/dancing but it was a long time and I also dug having all the effects around me when sitting for a bit. Also beware of overhang sections if in the 100s which blocks the view from above which is not good - or extreme right or left - definitely impacts the experience.

GA is standing only. A really small club sized section in front of the stage. One negative is that if you are there for the visuals you'll have to crane your neck up, but everything I heard from people who had GA said it was a blast. Looked pretty roomy too. Wouldn't even need to push your way close to the stage to be close. Looked cool to hang back with more room.

I'm pretty sure GA floor wasn't transferrable, like you couldn't resell them on Stubhub. Tickemaster has some sort of resale thing where you could offer them for face but I'm not sure how that worked or if that will be the same this year. I'm sure there will be info or a pop up during the sales that will clarify.

I sat in the 100's and loved it. Had a seat, which was key for my sore legs from hoofing all over Vegas. Sound was great. Was close enough to have a connection with the band, which is important to me. I had a great view of the visuals but honestly got kind bored with them by night 2 since they reused most of em. So was glad I was close to the band. If you get 100s just make sure they are row 19-20 or below. The more center the better, but all seemed like a good a seat with the exception of maybe way on the ends. Anything higher than row 20 or so might be obstructed by the 200 section above. Those obstructed seats will almost definitely be available, probably under face, by show time for a worst case situation if you just wanted to get in the building.

Most everyone was standing in the seats around us. Some tourists who were just checking them out where there too, which is expected in Vegas I guess but was kinda a vibe killer. Some of those people just sat down and talked the whole show.

I didn't pull the trigger. Got into the presale, but was a bit late to the party. Only options were far left and right and under the overhang. Saw 4 together up close in 100s but when I clicked on them, 2 of the four disappeared. So, I decided to chill. Will keep my eyes open during the upcoming months and see what options might arise.

keep an eye on stubhub and others - started out crazy but as it got closer i found a lot of great deals. Watch out for those obstructed seats - stay clear! I personally thought the higher seats were too much for me - Id splurge for 100 or 200 level seats - def worth it.

looks like GA might be transferrable this year. Didn't see any warning they wouldn't be like last time. Also were cheaper this year.

I took at look at some of the presale, seemed the only stuff available was upper rows in the 100s or on the very ends.

I'm gonna do two shows in April this time. Ended up grabbing floor for 1. Will wait until closer to the show to get the other night. Hoping some front/center 100's pop up for face. Didn't do GA last year so wanted to give it a try. GA was also $100 less this year for some reason and fully transferrable. Figured it was worth grabbing them.

I've been working my way through all the live shows I can find online (mainly YouTube and Relisten.net) and ran across something really cool.

There's only 1 available source for the 11/12/72 show (Kansas City), and it's noted that it has "mix problems". The problem being that the vocals are WAAAAY low. At first it was a little anoying, but as I listened on I realized that this makes the instrumentals stand out beautifully. Especially the guitar and bass. Really cool to hear the interplay so cleanly.

Besides, I know all the words anyway by now. It's almost like a Karaoke track

I'm pretty sure the ReListen app pulls pulls directly from archive.org.

I think you're right, because there were some archive.org outages late last year, and ReListen stopped working (for Dead shows anyway).
