Liverpool FC - The Climb to a Superclub (1 Viewer)

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to be more like Chelsea as they look to secure Champions League football next season.
Chelsea and Tottenham are both impressive.  When they get the lead, it's over.  It's funny because Tottenham didnt' always have that mentality.  I remember my first year as a fan, they gave up a lot of late equalizers.  It's why I have tremendous hope for next year. If LIV could slam the game shut, they'd be competing with Chelsea.

I switched from Newcastle to Arsenal officially when they got relegated (the year before Andy Carroll and Peter Lovenkrands tore up the Championship).  I wasn't up to following a team in the Championship.  In fairness, though, I'm a crappy Arsenal fan too.  Probably should have picked a team based on a better criteria than "I like the beer."
Everyone has a right to choose and switch for whatever reason. I'd never question that. I have a problem when Americans glom onto a team and then try to emulate the natives by adopting the various triabalistic trappings that seem to be so important to them. That never works. I've been to Stamford Bridge a couple times, but can't manage to pretend I "hate" the West London clubs any more than any other clubs, including the international rivals based thousands of miles away.

You know I agree with you on that.  I'm supposed to hate Tottenham?  How?  They seems like fine lads.

I think there's another aspect as well.  Here's an article that really blew my mind:

Man City and Liverpool are the two smallest teams in the EPL.  Liverpool are also the worst team in the EPL in contesting headers.
That's really Klopp has set the team up though right?  There's really only one defensive midfielder on the entire squad.  Chelsea and Tottenham generally start two.

Lazio are loathsome on their own merits, though.  Hell, I hate Lazio and I'm not particularly a Roma fan.

You know, I can admire or be amused by almost any team in bigly futbol except for ManU. I think it might be because I'm almost a commie and they're one of the richest clubs in the world. It pained me mightily when Zlatan and Lukie Shaw transferred in.

I told you before, gb...Livorno...they're the squad for you...

(though, not quite so bigly)

4 years ago the grandfather in law is over here across the pond visiting us in the bay area for xmas. We are out looking at some house that's all done up with lights and has some other bull#### display going on. Some guy asks me for the time and I immediately pick up on his English accent, I give him the time then yell over to the old man to come talk to another Brit. First words out of the GIL's mouth are "who's your team" at which the guy replied proudly "Liverpool". F'n old ******* instantly looks at me and asks why I'd call him over to talk to a scouzer :lmao:  but then turns back to the guy and says it's good to speak to a real person instead of all these damn American bastards. They chatted for another 10 minutes or so and then decided they'd meet up for beers first thing the coming Saturday morning for beers/Bacardi and football.

I can't deny you, only hope to contain you. Whenever my friends mention AS Roma, I'll just say they're a bunch of porch-pissers.

Maybe that's it.  I don't know.  A lot of the goals conceded are off set pieces.  LIV gives up the fewest shots per game in the premier league aside from Man City.

I know it's probably simplistic to say it's all Mignolet and the CB's, but I don't really feel like it's some sort of inability to control the game defensively.  Usually LIV look great for 90 minutes a game and have 1-2 total brain farts.  It's not as if teams are carving them up over and over, or at least it doesn't seem that way.

That's true.  I hate Man U and Tottenham for some reason.  Don't know why, that's just how it's happened with me.  I think with ManU it's because everytime I meet a Man U fan, they know nothing about the game, they just like them because they are "Man U", etc.  The only exceptions are the guys in this thread and ONE person I know.

It's a pretty cool trick.  Try it.  Next time you are at the gym or see a guy with a ManU shirt on, ask them about their team.  Almost always, they really don't know much. So annoying..

Concentration is pretty important.

Welll...sometimes ya just let things slide, see?

eta; my initial admiration for Real Zaragoza was admittedly based on "on-field/on television" observation, without due diligence on background...

#hypocrite?
Eh, pretty much every club has their share of racist ####ers...just like the FFA

Also found this terribly written segment on the wiki for Mallorca, whom looks destined to fall out of the Segunda:

2016: A Breath of Hope[edit]

On January 4, 2016, American Robert Sarver became the largest shareholder of the Bermellone Club with a substantial group investment, and he immediately named Maheta Molango the Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. And, after several more unfavorable performances, Molango replaced Pepe Gálvez with the experienced coach Fernando Vázquez, who had coached RCDM in the first division in 1999. Vázquez was instructed to salvage the season in the second division, so that the team could compete for promotion in the 2016/17 season. Additionally, with the new capital, RCDM signed Lago Junior and Diogo Salomao in the winter market to try and bolster the roster. Finally, with life in the balance, the team earned survival in the Second Division by beating Valladolid 3-1—away at Valladolid—and with the help of UD Almería tying Ponferradina.

Now, during the 2016 summer, RCDM has brought in a new technical director, shed twelve bodies from the roster, and brought in six experienced players.

I think Coutinho is a great player, but also a replaceable player.  I don't know if there's another Sadio Mane out there, but I have little doubt that you could get another winger with pace to play the left wing and score/assist goals.

"Hello Mr. Pulicic? Jah, Jurgen Klopp here. Do you like making money?"

I know my favorite Pennsylvanian just re-signed a contract and all...but if I'm Klopp I throw a huge 40M dollar offer at Dortmund anyway.  Oh and a massive pay increase.  I mean, Man U just gave Jesse Lingard 100k/week....come make some money..

Klopp said Mane is officially out for rest of season.
And now Coutinho, who subbed off sick at 60, has been out of training and w/doctors all week with his sickness.  Klopp is hoping he can play tomorrow, but how confident can we be in a sick player running around.  :/

This is Wenger isn't it?  He's some kind of witch doctor.

You want to hate historical frontrunners, hate mancu and liv. You want to hate new owners throwing money around to buy wins, hate chels and city. You want to hate leg-breakers , hate Stoke. Otherwise,.

Shader,

I'm not sure if you've read or if it's been mentioned but Among the Thugs by Bill Buford is an excellent read (imo). that is all

Didn't realize this thread existed... tomkins is always a good read.

I especially enjoyed:

These are two more players who denied Liverpool points late on in the league via aerial situations. (Fellaini rising above four smaller Liverpool players to hit the bar for Rooney to turn it in last season, and this season, Fellaini again winning the ball in the air before it fell to Ibrahimovic to get the late headed equaliser. Chaos approach plus giants = a chance.) He may have all the skill and finesse of a rotted carthorse carcass whose bones and sinew have been spread far and wide, but Fellaini is hard to mark on high balls and crosses (the elbows he swings helps his cause, too).

There's a lot for me to hate until the R's make it back to the Prem.

You want to hate owners who have no soul and have a sickening addiction to money, hate Arsenal.

Great weekend for Liverpool.  Thrilling comeback win over Stoke, with the best goal I've yet seen.  Then Arsenal lose 3-0 which is really going to make it tough for Arsenal to comeback.

In an effort not to jinx us, let's talk about the 4 ways this thing could go sideways:

1. Liverpool epic choke:  Certainly possible.  This is a team that has a tense fan-base that doesn't REALLY believe yet.  They have seen bad things happen for years and many of them honestly still think this is going to slip away.  They don't have the confidence in Klopp that I do, as I think he's honestly the Saban of soccer and is going to transform Liverpool in a similar way that Saban transformed a laughing-stock (Alabama) back into the powerhouse.  But my delusions aside, let's continue.

Next 6 games:  West Brom, CP, Southampton, Watford, West Ham, Middlesbrough.  All 6 are winnable games, though many of them will be very tough.  I honestly think 2 wins and 4 draws will be enough, but 3-4 wins would be great.  A win this weekend @ West Brom would basically be the nail in the coffin, barring something like a 5 game losing streak.

2. Man U catch fire:  I wouldn't put anything past Mourinho.  I think he's underrated, and I think Zlatan still has an insane purple patch in him ahead.  But the thing about ManU is that their schedule is just impossibly difficult.  Not only do they have 2-4 Europa League games, but they face Tott, City, Arsenal and Chelsea.  Their other games?  Oh no big deal, just @ Burnley, Crystal Palace...

United's schedule was very tough at the beginning and the end.  Their 21 game "not losing streak" coincides with the easy portion of their season.  Even if they continue to not lose, I think there are far too many dropped points ahead for United to get top 4.  Their only chance is either an epic finish, or a complete collapse by LFC or City, with above average form for United.  Beating Chelsea at home this weekend would be a start, but that seems highly unrealistic for a Chelsea team that would be in serious trouble if they lost this weekend.

3. Arsenal catch fire: I was quite worried about this before CP.  Arsenal beat West Ham, then had CP and Middlesbrough.  That seemed like the perfect 3-game stretch to gain confidence back, shoot for top 4 and shake the nerves of LFC.  But Arsenal showed that this team has basically given up.  It's very difficult to imagine this Arsenal team beating Tottenham or Man U.  But it's also tough to imagine them beating Everton, Southampton, going to Stoke and winning...I just don't see how Arsenal can win even 5 of their last 8.  It's gonna take something MAJOR to get this team going, and I don't know what that would be.  Firing Wenger perhaps?  That seems to be the only chance. Some sort of Shakespeare like response from the players?

Even so, it's still possible.  There are a lot of good players on the team and they have a week off to prep for Middlesbrough and to get another W.  They just need something to spark them.  Will they find it?

4. The Leicester miracle: The 4th way Liverpool can blow this is if Leicester wins the Champions League and ManU wins the Europa.  That would mean 4th place misses out on a CL berth!  This is probably the lowest of all odds.  Leicester beating up crappy teams over and over to win the EPL is one thing.  Leicester taking that team and beating 3 great European giants is another.  I don't see this as a possibility, even though I do predict that United will win the Europa.
