Living in Germany (1 Viewer)

I knew it was a matter of time before the usual suspects would say all of europe is on fire.  I'd love to have an opportunity to live there for a few years.  Take it!

Adults are open to conversation and don't insult others that think different. You're acting a fool right now.
Adults don't troll the internet with ignorance. This thread was started by some one looking for advice. I'm sure he realizes the world is a dangerous place in general. Things happen all over. Germany is just as safe as anywhere in the US.

have you ever been there?

My advice to him was I think it is too dangerous of a place to live in. That isn't trolling and what I 100 percent believe. You on the other hand, are trolling me with insults because you can't handle it.

What do you base your beliefs on?

Also, the move is likely to improve your marketability for future positions both inside your current company and outside as well.  It shows you can adapt, be flexible in your approach, and are willing to take some risk.

As the father of 3.5 year old twins, I can tell you, it gets easier from where you are with them.

No dog in this fight but in no way was his comment ruining this thread. It's just another opinion to consider. It didn't strike me as being even vaguely inappropriate.
Disagree 100% you can't say that without saying why. If it had been it's a dangerous place because of an increase in crime rate of X% and any other measurable metric or actual personal experience it's different story but he doesn't and didn't offer that. So no, it had no place in a thread asking for advice.

How long ago was this? Germany has changed a lot
Who cares? I live in Chicago. It's the Wild West here. I've had 2 shootings within 3 blocks of my condo within the last 3-4 months. I don't let the possibility of a little random violence keep me from enjoying my life.

So Ramstein and Weisbaden

Pros:

-You live in a village, safe as safe can be, lower crime rate than Topeka, Kansas and the people are pretty nice.  It's exponetntially safer than the US, don't listen to Piggs and that other guy.  They have never done anything in their lives but get liver disease and venereal disease.  Probably from a dude in DFSguys's case.

-Food is good, you'll have some gasthaus in your neighborhood with schnitzel and spatzle and a good local German beer on tap.

-You would be 4 hours from Paris, 5 hours from Berlin, 6 hours from Italy, and 5 hours from Prague.  I use numerals instead of spelling out the number for the morons like DFSguy who has a 4th grade education.

-You'll get all your housing paid for

-You will have neighbors who watch your house, who will love your kids, and who will not vote for Trump

-DODDs schools are great, top rated.  Your kids will grow exponentially and become better people for it.

-Ramstein Air Base is so secure, you could sleep on the flightline and only the deer would bother you

Cons:

-Weather can really suck.  Three months of winter is drizzle and darkness.  Summers can happen, but maybe won't.

-You'll have to post your great experiences here and Higgs and dfsguy will tell you that Islamists are trying to kill you and you are lying.  So stop posting here when you move.

Sorry, there is no way he wasn't trying to interject his Trump propganda here. Your're either naive or disengenuous. There's plenty of threads for him to do that in and he has every right to do so. Here it is absoluely inappropriate unless you think the OP has never watched the news or think that there aren't any violent crimes in the US. I hope you have enough awareness to realize that.

Rascal is asking for for legit advice on a major life decision (relocating a family to another country) and two buffons see it as another opportunity to spew their rhetoric. I do not usually get involved in these discussions but that just struck me as dispicable. They know what they are doing and its taking away from legit dicussion that can help the OP. if you do not think they are just stirring the pot then i don't know what to say.

Plus what they are saying is hyperbolic and not useful, even if they were sincere.

Always wanted to go to Munich for Oktoberfest
Crowd can actually get ridiculous there, go during the week.  I've been four times, will never go again.  It's like the best carnival/fair you've ever been to, with more people than you can handle.

Big fan of Bavaria region. Spent some time last year during Christmas market time, was pretty spectacular.

Definitely plan on going back.

German food underrated.
I miss Doner Kebabs so bad.  You'd think they could replicate that here, but they can't.

Best drunk food ever, and it's damn good for lunch too!  Germans do pork the best too, but I'm not a huge pork fan so I never really appreciated it.

Probably the most dangerous place to be in Germany. Last time I was there I passed out on the floor at the train station, got in a scuffle with a homeless dude and was rudely awoken mid morning by some nasty cop dogs.

Great stuff...and yes, getting housing paid is pretty sweet as is no income tax for 18 months, but like I said earlier $$ is not why I would do this.  It's just icing on the cake.

How was medical?

Biggest concern is having twins that are 2 years old.  Wife relies on family to help out.  She would like to wait another 12-18 months.

Thanks for the concern about safety, but I feel pretty confident that my kids will be less exposed to guns/violence in Germany than in the US.

Medical good if you are at Ramstein.  I would suggest living in Landstuhl or around there anyway, that was the best place I lived there.  Huge hospital, easy access, good folks.  All I can tell you is that three or four years over there is a great experience and you wouldn't regret it.  Sure there are challenges but the resources you have connected to the DoD are endless and invaluable.  If you want to PM me please do, I'll answer anything and everything you have for me.  Nine years there was enough but I miss it sometimes, a lot recently.  It is super family friendly and after a few months your wife would love it.  It's something you guys can always talk about, it is something most Americans never have a chance to do.  I'm rooting for you to go!

I can see not having a support system of family and friends around being an obstacle. If the UK was a definite, I wouldn't let the language difference stop you and your family from the experience in Germany. Wiesbaden is very close to Frankfurt, which is a major airline hub, so travelling back to the US from time to time would be easy.
The driving on the other side of the street is the U.K.  would scare me more than the language thing would in Germany

You're thinking of Canada.  ;)

Just went back and read from the beginning. If I were the OP I'd move to either just for the experience. Kids are young enough to adjust. Adults can make new friends and old ones will visit and will be there when you move back.

Go!

Your kids are at a good age to pick up the language and will learn a different culture.  The 2 year olds won't get as much of the culture, but they will pick up the language.

Start working on your German before you go though.  I have a friend from high school whose husband accepted a position in Italy last year.  Them and their teenage daughter all moved there.  None of them, none, even attempted to learn any Italian before going.  Blows my mind.

It's UK and it's colonies that drive on the wrong side of the rode...typically.
He said he had two options

UK

Germany

his concern with Germany was language, I was saying that the language thing in Germany is easier than the driving thing in the UK.

This is true, never got used to driving on the other side.  It's like tossing a salad without a woman.

I was in Japan last week and every time I got in the passenger side of the car, I felt like I was trying to write in a mirror   I wasn't even driving

there would be times where I'd be looking down at my phone or something and get freaked out when I caught a car out of the corner of my eye   Very weird to sit on that side as passenger

it's a very odd feeling

Good question, and I will update this tomorrow or later tonight with the facts that I based my beliefs on, but for now I have to go.
Translation: I am going to post some absolute moronic bull #### and then cherry pick some whack job, fringe "news" site to retroactively support my inane posts.
