Living in Germany (1 Viewer)

My advice to him was I think it is too dangerous of a place to live in. That isn't trolling and what I 100 percent believe. You on the other hand, are trolling me with insults because you can't handle it.
Odd.  You said it was a fact a few posts ag.

Probably the most dangerous place to be in Germany. Last time I was there I passed out on the floor at the train station, got in a scuffle with a homeless dude and was rudely awoken mid morning by some nasty cop dogs.
Passing out on the train station floor tends to make places more dangerous.

Great stuff...and yes, getting housing paid is pretty sweet as is no income tax for 18 months, but like I said earlier $$ is not why I would do this.  It's just icing on the cake.

How was medical?

Biggest concern is having twins that are 2 years old.  Wife relies on family to help out.  She would like to wait another 12-18 months.
You are still responsible for filing taxes and will likely pay more in Germany so you won't owe the IRS anything.  I'd look into what you have to claim as far aas the free housing goes as well.

I'm in Germany now Rascal.   Love it.   Your kids will adapt quickly.   Probably more quickly than you or your wife.   If you're going to be close to Ramstein then as DD stated medical shouldn't be a problem.   I don't speak the language (I should by now but I'm really slow as you know)

This is my fourth Europe tour (11 years total) and I've always enjoyed it.   We like to hike, bike and kayak and they have great trails all over for hiking and biking.

Let me know if there's something you need or any other questions/concerns you have.

Three words for you:

Hot

German

Nanny

Thanks for the concern about safety, but I feel pretty confident that my kids will be less exposed to guns/violence in Germany than in the US.
Hopefully that ends that part of the "discussion" but sadly I'm not sure some trolls can help themselves. Good luck to you either way.

I can only add I travel to Germany often (work for Siemens) and the people are great, I've never felt unsafe and like I said most people speak English very well. I also take German lessons and while it's a difficult language you will pick a lot up fairly quickly. The grammar rules are ludicrous but the vocabulary is not so bad.

What do you base your beliefs on?
“We are very worried about the rise in violence by asylum seekers,” the police official added. The comments come following the release of figures which reveal a 95.5 per cent spike in the number of physical attacks carried out by asylum seekers and migrants.

Chairman of the union of German criminal authorities, André Schultz, says that up to 90% of sex crimes committed in Germany are not included in official statistics.
Chairman of the German police union, Rainer Wendt, described the situation in Germany as “a combination of mental instability, terrorism and crime.”

An alarming 66 per cent of Germans are afraid they will become the victim of a terrorist attack, with 10 per cent perceiving an “acute threat” to their safety.
Of the female respondents, 74 per cent said they sometimes feel unsafe in crowded places, and nine per cent felt permanently threatened and scared.

A report has found that German Chancellor Merkel and Dutch PM Rutte agreed a refugee quota with Turkey in 2016 without informing other EU leaders. They reportedly pledged to accept up to 250,000 Syrian refugees per year.

Stay away from Germany.

My goal is to move to Italy in the next 5 years and quit this country.............while we have no kids, given the opportunity to have a sponsored relocation to a European country, I would jump on it.  Germany is extremely financially stable and quite western.  Exposing your kids to another culture early on can only be beneficial.  I believe most americans believe we are the sun and the world revolves around us.  it is this attitude that a move can adjust and offer a new perspective.  So many other great side trips can be had from that location.

It took me and my wife about 2 years to learn Italian and become conversational with a tutor, learning a language is usually easier for children.  If we lived there full time, likely we would have learned faster being immersed in the language daily.  Many international schools abound for the kids IIRC.

The question is, what type of person/people are you?  status quo or willing to try new things?  sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and take the risk.  I would rent to begin with, then you can decide what direction to go.  You know what, you can always return......

DD has spent much time in Germany.  He is a jerk, but a good resource for info.

Visiting American tourists and expatriates have been infrequent victims of crime. Occasionally, Americans have had purses snatched and pockets picked in high traffic and tourist areas (e.g., in train stations, Internet cafes, crowded restaurants, and outdoor market places), but violent crimes against Americans have been relatively infrequent. While personal assaults do occur, there is no reason to believe these crimes are driven by anti-American sentiment, but are rather the result of opportunity and convenience.

This is from the US DoS.............it's not breitbart, but nothing can be that accurate.

also, many of your co-workers may reheat fish in the microwave in your breakroom.  the ventilation may be poor.

Always wanted to go to Munich for Oktoberfest
I went in 2015.  It was amazing.  Munich is a very beautiful, friendly city.  And for those talking about safety, please.  It's transparent, guys.  My wife is a 5' 5" 110 lb blonde with giant blue eyes who looks like she just stepped out of the pages of a Laura Ingalls story.  You literally couldn't find a bigger "target" for ne'er-do-wells.  She walks around gazing pie-eyed at EVERYTHING.  She looks like a tourist in whatever town she actually lives in.

I had zero issue with letting her walk around downtown Munich at night by herself (I was on the brink of unconsciousness after 7 mass at Oktoberfest.)  Zero.  There are no issues with safety in Germany and anyone suggesting otherwise is advancing an agenda, despite any disingenuous protests to the contrary.

Extremely

Big fan of weiner schnitzel
Jager Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, Rouladen, Frikadeller, Leberkase, Schweinebraten, Schweinehaxe - there's tons of good stuff over there.  Plus, a brotzeit is about the greatest thing ever.  What?  It's 10:30 AM?  Time for a couple sausages and a beer !  I was born in the wrong country.

Didn't like his links?
the links he provided are decidedly one sided and run contrary to my personal experiences (spent a week in Heidelburg in 2015), as well as pretty much anyone I have talked to who has been to Germany recently (including people in this forum).

I would also point out that after a 5 minute google search, Germany seems to have lower homicide rates than USofA: homicide rates: USA: 3.9, Germany: 0.9 (murders per 100k per year).

It's worth noting that Brietbart called Chicago a "War Zone".  As there isn't actually a war going on in Chicago, we safely say that Breitbart is subject to hyperbole, especially hyperbole slanted towards their brand of political hackery.  We should take everything there with a grain of salt.

We in Baltimore laugh at those crime stats.  And our women are tougher too.  Not hotter for sure, but tougher.

Man those people who make up like 5% of the total population must be committing crimes at a very bigly rate in order to inflate the crime stats like that.  Stay away from Germany indeed.

Meanwhile in Germany the Tub of Goo equivalent over there is telling people on the internet not to go to D.C. because of the riots in Baltimore.

violent crimes against Americans have been relatively infrequent
I recall one night I was riding my bike to my local in Bonn to meet up with some friends, and was accosted by an elderly German man who took issue with the fact I was riding the wrong way down a one-way street and was nearly invisible without lights on the bike. He swore at me - "kein Arsch seht dich von hinten!" There was violence in his voice. He was angry, but I forgave his assault as I knew well that even minor breaches of traffic regulations are very serious matters to the Germans.

I spent a week in Germany at a University town many years ago.  The deli meat counter at the supermarket was about a quarter mile long.  The people were very friendly, most spoke English.  Everything was clean and well constructed.

I have no idea whether or not anyone has mentioned school for the eight-year-old, but Frankfort International School has a branch in Wiesbaden.  I grew up in Dusseldorf, and went to the school there.  Recommended.

There isn't a week that goes by I don't think about a Döner kebab.  Best sandwich evah!
All my Mil buddies rave about it as well. They are in Germany a couple times a month and are always bringing back amazing beer (love the green plastic crates), and bourbon we can't get stateside (blantons straight from the barrel).

Never been, but if I had an offer like the OP I'd likely injure myself leaping to sign the offer sheet. Do it, dude.

Indeed.  I actually reached out to my former boss who is a big wig in Germany right now about coming back because of this thread.

Also big fan of the bartender contest you got going on, GB that stuff.  :hifive:
