Looking for suggestions on WWire pickups. (1 Viewer)

Currently we have two days set aside for transactions of any type. Wed and Thurs. If a trade occurs it has to be done on these days, any free agent aquisitions must be done on these days. As it is any one may call in and request a pick up, if there is more than one requesting the same player then the names of the owners go into a hat and they go by lottery. I feel that this is unfair to the struggling owner. In an effort to give the lesser team a chance I suggested that we automatically give the player to the lesser team. This was shot down. I then suggested that we wiegh the drawing (much like the NHL draft) in favor of the lessor team. They werent exactley sold on this but were willing to listen. How does your league handle Free agent pickups...... Just looking for a few good Ideas! First come first serve is not ans option here.

we do drop/ adds once a week on a worst to first basis....worst team in the league get first pick..and so on....after each has one pick back to the bottom for round 2...It DOES give the lower teams a serious advantage and they can indeed become competitive that way.....

having said that , I HATE IT......

all of the rules of my league and any other ive seen are written to give an even playing field for all teams so each may have the same shot at winning the championship..... so why should waivers be any different ? why reward a team that drafted poorly with a leg up and penalize the guys who drafted well ???

right now the guy in first place has been trying for AT LEAST 6 weeks to pick up a running back with any chanc of starting...the results????? not gonna happen as hes always too far down the list to get one.....

for 2 years ive tried to get the rule changed but for some reason people seem to like it????

As a commish and a guy almost always hanging towards the tail end of the waiveer list, I would tell the first place guy wanting a RB to get off his butt and trade from his depth.

IN the real NFL, the worst teams get the first draft picks. The waiver system more then makes sense in FF.

As far as an unfair advantage, it seems that most years the guys who draft poorly also evaluate talent poorly, and are too slow to pick up the key FA's early in the season who can make a difference (like Colsten, Cotchery, et. al.) It's no more unfair then when your stud RB breaks his foot in week 3.

We lock rosters every week an hour before game time. After that week's games, everyone can submit waiver bids. Waivers are processed based on record with total points being the tiebreaker.

I process waivers Wednesday night, and release the results Thursday morning. Anyone who did NOT get their bid can make a free pickup of anyone at the same position available (dropping same player they intended at first) sometime during the day...a compensational waiver bid.

After that, free agency is wide open on a first come first serve basis until sunday morning.

So, you're saying this guy has maintained his spot atop the standings without a RB who starts??? Sounds to me like he's doing fine then with the rest of his roster. Also sounds like the rest of the league isn't taking advantage of the waiver position, if they can't catch a team that's short on RBs.We use Wednesday waivers, worst to first, then "free-for-all" from Thursday through Monday night. If you guys aren't using line-up changes and free-agent pick-ups through the start of the Monday night game, then THAT'S creating an unfair advantage. Why should an owner be penalized by a gametime decision just because his player's game starts later??

Some type of bidding system for free agents is the way to go here, if you want to give every team an equal shot at a player. I'm not necessarily saying its a better waiver system overall because one could argue that the worst teams should have a higher chance. But bidding will definately work well for what you are trying to do.

You could use real money to enhance the prize pot or you can give each team an allotment of fake money at the beginning of the season. You can make the bid amounts sealed bids ("blind") or you could make the bidding public like an auction style.

Edit to add - This method doesn't necessarily answer the OP's question but it is a good compromise between WtoF and random draw.
