Vikings | Tice and Wilf to meet MondaySat, 31 Dec 2005 07:46:40 -0800Updating previous reports, the Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf and head coach Mike Tice are scheduled to meet Monday morning, Jan. 2, to discuss Tice's future with the team. "It doesn't look good," one assistant coach said. Tice's agent, Jimmy Sexton, has not spoken with Wilf this week. Tice said he had no new information. "The sooner Zygi and I meet next week the better," Tice said. "I have not had any talks with Zygi this week that went beyond talks of the game."

Why the shock?The team got rid of the guy labeled as a team cancer, replaced his salary space with several new starters, had two first round draft picks and lost a very winnable NFC North.Plus his contract expires after Sunday.

I know the people who dislike Tice are pretty loud about it, but does anyone still like this guy? It may be time for him to go in MIN but I think he still has a future. I think a team like the Texas could do a whole lot worse than pick him up to replace Bum Capers.

I'd love to hear names of tons of coaches available that are heads and shoulders above tice. I'd put Tice at about a 60 or 65 on a 100 scale. Agree with Capers being about a 3. maybe a 2.

Im a big fan of Tice, but I cant defend some of the in-game HC decisions he makes. Id like to see him as my teams OL coach/Asst HC.

He does? There was some talk about him being coach of the year when the Vikings were 8-5 (I didn't think he deserved any consideration then) and still fighting for a playoff spot, but now, at 8-7 and with no shot at the playoffs, Tice will get ZERO consideration.

I continue to insist:If it weren't for that pencil behind his ear, Mike Tice would be worthless from the neck up.
As a Vikes fan I love Tice as a players' head coach. However, since he's arguably the worst game coach in the league along with Martz or Sherman (he has had me scratching my head a lot the last few years) its a necessity that he has two bright offensive and defensive coordinators calling the games and preparing the X's and O's. Losing Linehan and Romeo really hurt us, as evidenced by the first few games of the year. Therefore, I'd love Tice as a coach as evidenced by the job he did this year motivating and keeping the team together. But with too much strategy resting on his shoulders, I'd opt for someone else.

I think Tice gets unfairly crucified around here. In all fairness to Mike Tice... not only was he the lowest paid coach in the entire NFL, he also had the lowest paid assistants in the entire NFL. It's no wonder that his offensive coordinator left him to coach GUS FREROTTE. I think that if you get Tice a decent supporting cast, he'd look a lot better than he does now.And if you're wondering what difference assistants make... Mike Shanahan spent 10 years of his career with the stigma that he couldn't evaluate/develop CBs. This last season, two of the three best rookie CBs have played for Denver. Major kudos go out to Bob Slowik, former GB Defensive Coordinator and current Denver secondary coach. Other superstar assistants, guys like Tim Brewster, Bobby Turner, Hudson Huock, Alex Gibbs, and John Teerlink, not to mention the stud coordinators like Greg Williams, Marvin Lewis, and Lovie Smith, can make average coaches look like superstars. Just look at how much St. Louis's defense declined simply by losing Lovie Smith two seasons ago.
Not saying that Tice isn't a bad coach, I'm only saying that I really haven't seen enough yet to say whether he's a bad coach or not.

Tice is gonna make some NFL team one helluva O-Line / TE coach, unless he wants to be a head coach in college.If Russ Grimm leaves the Steelers, Tice could slide right in nicely.

Maybe that says something about Wilf's view of the current front office staff as well.
It all depends on how the team is structured. Not all Coaches report to the GM - in some organizations the front office deals with player scouting and cap management but does not supervise the coach.

Ok, I think the Vikings could do better than Tice, but it must be noted that he lost two pro bowlers on offense (Culpepper and Birk - I think the Birk loss was a big reason Culpepper struggled early. Withrow was the center, but during the winning streak Fowler became the starter...then he got hurt and Withrow played most of the Pittsburgh game and all of the Baltimore game).This was the first year he was given any money to be allowed to get players, and by the end of the year the defense was playing well. I would rather have someone else, but I don't see Tice as being what was wrong with the Vikings this year. He made some boneheaded in game calls the past couple years, but I really didn't see many this year. I hope they are doing this because they have someone lined up already (Fassell, please!!).

IMHO, this is great news. I am so tired of excuses – he wants the jumbotron to show more replays and the crowd to cheer or boo louder so that he can get the benefit of questionable calls. It’s just embarrassing. I don’t believe the players respect him. Would these off the field incidents continue with any other coach? I just saw the piece on Nick Saban on CBS. I’m envious of the way he runs the Dolphins.
Man, I guess the grass is always greener on the other side, but I remember when Fassel was fired. I also remember WHY he was fired. Lifetime record of 58-53-1, only 3 playoff appearances. He's considered an offensive genius, but a Fassel-led offense has only finished in the top 10 in yards twice, and has never finished top 10 in scoring. And look what he's done in 2 seasons in Baltimore- not much.You know what I never understood? Why does Art Shell never come up when discussing head coaching vacancies? In 1989, he took over a 1-3 Raiders team (who was 7-9 the season before) and went 7-5 with them. Lifetime record is 54-38. Only had 1 losing season in 6 years (and even that was only 7-9). He has the same playoff record as Fassel (2-3). And the guy he took over for, Mike Shanahan... he seems to be doing alright over in Denver. Art Shell certainly looked better than Shanny in Oakland, didn't he?
Find me an unemployed, non-retired Head Coach (so no Madden or no Shula) who has a better winning percentage than Shell's 58.7%. There might be some out there, but certainly not many. So I ask again, why is Shell never brought up as a potential head coach?

He was never head coach material to begin with. He was named interim coach when Denny got fired because he was the only one on the staff that seemed likeable enough, and they just stuck with him because he seemed like a likeable guy.Unfortunately for him, likeable doesnt cut the mustard.
That just isn't true. Almost every Viking that has been asked has said that they want Tice back. There's only been one 'unnamed starter' who has complained about Tice to the media. He's a player's coach and the players love him. Doesn't mean that he's a good coach, just saying that the players are behind him.

Worst Game Day Coach in the league. He is a wonderful OL coach (although this year's line was in disarray from the start) and gets along well with the players (players' coach) but he cannot manage a game or make adjustments during the game. I hope he is done, and I hope Zygi lays out some money to bring in a whole new "complete" staff.
