My mother has been diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to her liver. She's in her mid-50s.

When I first got the news I was convinced that my mom would be dead in 18 months. "Cancer" is already a scary thing, and when the doctor says it has spread to other organs it just seems like there's no hope. We haven't met with an oncologist yet, but based on the fact that it has metastasized to her liver I'm guessing she is it at stage 3, maybe even stage 4. The 5 year survival rate for stage 4 colon cancer is like 11% I believe. This is very nerve-wracking. The oncologist appointment should be within the next two weeks. I doubt treatment would even start this month.

But I've become a bit more optimistic about the situation after reading up on natural cancer remedies and about people who beat their cancer without doing chemo or radiation.

Now, I don't expect my mother to forgo chemo but there are other things that she can do to fight this in addition to the chemo/radiation.

I want her to go on a full vegan diet with maybe a little bit of fish and chicken

Fresh fruits and vegetables

Green smoothies

Exercise daily

Yoga/meditation to reduce overall stress

Anti-cancer herbs and teas (ashwagandha, essiac tea, green tea, ginger root, tumeric, etc)

If anybody has any recommendations for other natural remedies, please share. And if any of you have any experience with colon cancer, I'd appreciate any info/advice.

Thanks.

...best of luck.

My aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer years ago. Long story short. The cancer had some type of mutation. The doctor said it's only the second times he's seen this mutation in over 200 cases. Doctor said "this is truly a miracle". She takes meds now, she has some side effects, but she's alive and enjoying life and never had to do chemo. The doctors say she can continue to live a full life as long as she's taking her meds. I hope your mother has the same outcome.

I write this as someone who just lost my brother to cancer, and my mom a few years before that.

Obviously if the cancer has spread to the liver the chances are not good. But they're still the only chances you have. I believe that the "natural cancer remedies" are a scam. Chemo and/or radiation treatment and/or surgery is still the most effective remedy, and really the only shot your mother has. I wish you nothing but the best of luck, but I don't recommend anything other than what the oncologist recommends.

Oh man. So very sorry to hear. :( Thoughts and prayers being sent to your mom, you and your family. Sounds like she has great support in you and that's a big part of the battle. Good luck and God bless.

I agree. I'm not going to waste my time with natural remedies even if mine hasn't spread to organs. So far, nothing is more effective than chemo/radiation, unfortunately.

I'm afraid this is going to sound ****-ish and I really don't mean it that way, but here goes...

What has to be important is what she wants, not what you want for her. My mom went through some cancer stuff, though not nearly as serious as this sounds. She dealt with it way different than I thought she should, but I finally realized it was her battle, not mine. I did my research and made my suggestions when it was appropriate, but mostly I just tried to do whatever she needed/wanted me to do.

Be supportive, and by all means try to keep her motivated, but also keep in mind it is her battle. Best of luck and I hope it works out for the best!

Let me rephrase my response. She must do what the oncs tell her, even if is intense and she feels like crap doing it. People have different experience with chemo/radiation so she may be lucky in that it doesn't bother her too much.

The vegan diet needs to be her choice. I for one could never even be a vegetarian. The most I've done is cut a ton of red meat out but to go to 0, for me I would rather take the risk unless the doc says I must, but it would be him to tell me to stop.

The rest of your list is of course great, even for those not facing cancer. Always best to be healthy.

Anything stress relieving. I'm a music fanatic so I have my headphones on a lot, even while watching tv. Anything she finds relaxing is a must to do. I sleep a lot more now. You have to do what your body tells you when it comes to rest, even if a day or two goes by and you just can't get out to do your walk.

Anyway, that's all I can think of as I'm thinking of stuff.
