Our league has its annual free agent/rookie draft upcoming, so I'm sifting through some prospects at the QB position who may play this season, and yet still have some long-term upside. One qualifier: looking for mid- to later-round guys (so rookies like Ryan and Flacco, who may fit this category, probably would go too high to be included for the purposes of this thread).
Random thoughts--feel free to comment or add your own additional prospects.
Troy Smith--in the last two games of the season (the only games in which he got extended playing time) Smith posted QB ratings of 77.7 and 90.2 and did not turn the ball over. Can run. Seems to have the intangibles (he's "a winner" and I recall hearing that the players on the team were behind him). Competition at QB in BAL is WIDE open.
Things I don't like: Organization believes in him so much that they drafted his presumed replacement in Round 1. Completion % could be higher. He's not prototypical (but he *is* about the size of Drew Brees).
Shaun Hill--everybody can see his numbers from the three games in which he played last season. Great QB ratings, 5-to-1 TD/INT ratio. Competition at QB in SF is not a done deal--big upside in a Martz offense if he gets the gig. Good size (6'3", 235 lbs).
Things I don't like: Looming presence of a guy (A. Smith) who makes a ton more money that Hill does.
Matt Moore--In extended time during the last three games last season, Moore looked good (QB ratings of 92.8, 70.8, and 94.8). Delhomme has been ailing, yet the Panthers did not draft a QB this season (which either speaks to brimming confidence in Delhomme or Moore). Has good size (6'3", 202 lbs).
Things I don't like: Probably has the least-direct path to a starting job of these three, since it would probably take an injury to (or incomplete recovery by) Delhomme to land Moore the job. Seems more prone to throw picks at this point than the other two listed.
Rosenfels may fit here, too?
