LPT: If you're planning on using UBER, have a backup plan (1 Viewer)

Haven't had any issues with either Uber or Lyft.  I'm a 3-4 ride per month kinda fella.

A few of the cars have been jankier than the norm - and honestly I don't recall whether it was Uber or Lyft.

Knock on wood.

Use Uber a lot here. Haven't run into issues in Phoenix where use most often. Definitely can see issues for those taking directly to airport in regards to reliability. I don't take it directly to the airport. I take it to the airport Sky Train ~mile away.

I think if there's potential for current/future issues it's cab drivers driving for Uber making a #### load less simply trying to sabotage experience with Uber. A Sky Harbor trip is 1/3 the price with Uber. Here I don't think it's as simple as cabs 'creating an Uber like app" (though I agree an app needs created.....nothing worse than sitting in a cab for 5+ mins waiting for their CC to work). But they've definitely got to lower prices (perhaps meet in the middle of its current prices and Uber).

For those of you having issues with Uber, stop requesting UberX and request UberSelect instead. You'll pay what Uber used to charge when it first started and get the service you used to get when Uber first started. UberX is like the dollar menu at McDonalds.

Nope. We've tried that. All of the drivers will call you once they accept and ask where you're going. If you don't answer, they cancel. If you put in the destination...they cancel.
They can't see your destination until they actually start the meter on your ride.  So I'm not sure your theory is correct.

Did you not read where it says the drivers will call you and ask where you're going before they come pick you up? I've had drivers "connect" and have it say they're 12 minutes away, they call and I tell them and they say okay,  and then they'll sit in the "waiting lot" not moving until I'm forced to cancel so I can call another one. Or it will disconnect on the app and connect me with ANOTHER drive automatically which ends up having the same thing happen. The fact drivers on their own message board are talking about this kind of confirms it.

They do it because Uber has set the rate too low. They lose money putting more miles on their car then what your fare will produce. If you want them to come get you, tell them you are headed 20 miles away. 12 minutes later when they arrive and you get in, tell them your plans have changed and now you just need to go a couple blocks. They will lose money when you do this, but that's not your problem, right?

Agree. That's a fight between them and Uber, but from now on that's exactly what I'm going to do.

I did, then you said if you enter the destination they cancel.  Doesn't make sense since they have no idea where you are going unless you tell them.

Also if they wait at the airport I think they use a cue system.  So if they turn you down wouldn't they move to the back of the line?

I use uber from the airport too, never experienced any of this.  No one has ever asked for my destination, not once in 20+ trips.  Weird.

I guess I don't pay close attention, but I think they just call every time now. Regardless if you have the destination already put in.

Not sure how they do it in LAX. I'm guessing it is a queue system, but I think drivers feel it's worth dropping back in hopes they get a better customer 30 minutes later?

I travel quite a bit as well. It's only in the past year, or so they've started doing this. It might just be an LAX thing because it hasn't happened for me anywhere else either.

From the looks of the uber driver boards, this tactic is very common in LA. Probably because the Uber rates are so low compared to the cost of living there. They only get $0.85 per mile. Compare that to the $1.75 per mile drivers in NY get, and it's a natural result that drivers in LA pull that stunt frequently while drivers in NY pull it rarely.

Yeah that sucks.  I've used uber in 6 or 7 locations and never had those issues, but would be pissed like you if I had.

Took about 8 or 9 ubers this week and almost every single one of them was gross. At least two were made in the 90s.

Had multiple unfriendly drivers, loud music and no AC on. ####ing horrible. I'm done.

Used to feel like a luxury and now it's just another #### way to get around.

I hate when the driver cancels and uber issues you a credit instead of a refund. Can't believe there hasn't been a lawsuit over that.  I want my money back not a credit

I just need someone to get me to the game/bars then back home after I've drank a bunch. I don't need a towncar, friendly driver, etc. Tell me what it costs in advance, charge me that amount, and let me have the little GPS thing that shows me how close you are.

Uber still the best at that in my area.

These uber drivers are worse and worse. I try my best to get a yellow cab more and more bc they're just the ####### suck!

I entered an address on the south side of the street, guy hits arriving now bc they start billing within 2 minutes of that. He arrives on the north side of the street. For those not familiar with Manhattan, I entered the south side of the street for a reason at this location, going up a side street and coming back down takes 5-10 minutes during rush hour. I called the guy and he insisted I get in on te north side, I said no and he drove away. Got an email from Uber that I'm charged for the cancellation, caught a yellow cab. If they don't refund the money, this will be my last Uber ride.

Yup, aside from the very occasional trip from my office to airport (park my car there rather than at airport)... which, by the way, has always been top-notch service.... this is how I operate.  To the sports bar to watch the game, trip home.

I've only had a couple of cars that were not so nice, but that's about it.

Had a smokin' 22 year old chick on Friday night in a brand new Chrysler.   :homer:

It's hard to find a ride without surge pricing in SF.  I often just flag a taxi.

Last month they charged me a fee because I cancelled a ride.  The guy drove right by me and never came back.  Not sure exactly what they wanted me to do.
