Lucid dreaming (1 Viewer)

Couple of dream tricks:

If you are in a room with a window or a door be sure to go look out with the image you want in your mind.

Suggest to yourself that you are taking a video recorder or camera with you and take a pic or vid of the most significant dream of the night.

I am currently working on being aware of the transitional moment when I 'fall asleep'. I try and go in and out at will.

I have had a bit of success getting to a pre-lucid state doing this.

The goal is to go directly to a lucid state upon 'falling asleep'.

This part is exactly what I was talking about when I referenced the in-between state of half-consciously awake and sleeping in my post on page 1 of the thread.

Ive been trying this for the past week now. The remembering part was really easy. Its amazing how much you remember about your dreams just by forcing yourself to think about it as soon as you wake up. That part of it has been really cool. Im not having any luck with actually controlling the dreams though. Is this somthing that may just happen, or is it possible that Im not able to do this part?

It's the part that takes the most practice--you need to develop the ability to recognize and acknowledge that you're dreaming. Sometimes you can force it, like the looking at your hands thing. Just keep telling yourself when you're awake that that when you're dreaming, you're going to look at your hands. You'll be dreaming, and you'll find yourself looking at your hands. Hopefully, some part of you thinks, "why the hell am I standing here looking at my hands?" At that point, the answer may come, "because I'm dreaming." Once you know you're in a dream, you can exert some degree of control. The other way this tends to happen is that you become aware of "dream signs"--things that don't happen normally. The example of light switches that don't do anything was mentioned before. One I can recall was that I was in a dream where I needed to go out the window. I was able to simply lift the screen out, without bending the frame or using some built-in handle. I realized that I must be dreaming, because it was too easy. Small signs like that become easier to recognize as you continue practicing.

Since the end of high school or college, I started "lucid dreaming." My dreams are extremely clear and in vivid color. When I wake up I can remember events, conversations, etc from the dream with great clarity. When I get up in the night for a bathroom stop, if I remember enough of the dream I can usually fall asleep back in the same dream. This usually works better if it is still plenty dark out or if I can stumble to the bathroom and back with my eyes closed.

I think I've written about this here before, but I've had a recurring dream for about 15 years now. It's this house that I have now completely mapped in my mind's eye but I can't get into the room upstairs in the attic and oddly enough that window has always had a yellow glow from the outside. I've never approached the house in the day time, always at night.

I can't offer much advice though. I have no idea how I've been able to do it nor could I give any tips to others. It just happens.

EX. maybe the guy with bear dreams has a subconscious fear of failure that manifests as a bear nipping at his heals. This is his psyche reaching out in a self-preservation manner to stop him before embarrassment or other factors can tank his success. With time and training he can force a win over his psyche and retrain his brain to bypass the self imposed failures of the "fear factor beast". The theory is that retraining the subconscious will then net positive gains in everyday waking life.
You hit the nail on the head here. I've got a huge subconscious fear of failure.

My concern with pursuing this would be that given the importance of sleep and dreams in forming memories and also probably in doing lots of other brain housecleaning chores, disrupting the "natural" dreaming process might have some unexpected effects.

Would be interested in any studies, but not sure how much worse it would be for you. We all are dreaming anyway, this is remembering them more and moving around in them. Might be an argument that it's better for you - might be in a deeper state of sleep, more like hypnosis or something.

You describing that story was by far my favorite one! I even told a lot of my friends about it....keep me updated.

I've been lucid dreaming for 16 years now. What I have found is that the more you are able to do and control in your "dream state" the more you are able to do and control in your "waking state". If you keep at it there are some amazing things that can happen. I'd tell you some of the things that are possible but you wouldn't believe me. So keep at it and find out for yourself.

I read this thread last week, and then did it this weekend. I didn't even set out to try it... I was dreaming and then all of a sudden I was like... "Hey, I'm dreaming!" So then I had sex with a hot vampire chick.

Hypnosis is actually closer to being conscious than REM sleep. Hypnosis has been described as 'concentrated focus', and is wrongly associated with sleep. Not to bag on you Karma. Most people think hypnosis is sleep. The word hypnosis(greek for sleep) was coined by James Braid in 1843. It wasn't until the 1950's scientists found hypnosis and sleep were not the same.

After a month of being more aware of my dreams I was finally able to control one last night. Cool stuff. I cant wait to try out flying once I bore of the supermodels. :hifive:

I had one a week ago. I was in the middle of god-knows-what when I did the "look down at my hands thing" and realized that I'm dreaming.

I don't remember the specifics of the dream, but I do remember walking out the door of wherever I was and smooching the first attractive woman that walked by. Then I woke up before I could get a reaction.

I'll read up on the original link more tonight and maybe I'll start keeping a dream journal.

I used to lucid dream all the time in my adolescent years, not so much any more. I was quite the little pimp in my lucid dreams. My only problem was that the majority of my lucid dreams would deteriorate to the point of me walking in what felt like molasses. Could barely move, get where I wanted to go, etc. When it got to this point is when I would usually wake up.

When I have very vivid dreams i wake up tired and feel like I didn't sleep enough. I can't imagine what this would be like. Do y'all that can do this feel well rested after?

you probably have vivid dreams all night, every night, but you just dont bother to remember them. before you go to bed tonight, make a conscious effort to think about and remember your dreams the second you wake up, even if its just to roll over in the middle of the night. you'll be surprised. i know i was.

Awesome thread. I've done a few of the things mentioned here, but always thought is was just by accident.

Kinda sorta related.....

Does anyone wish they were as creative as they are in their dreams? It is absolutely amazing to think about the various things I dreamt about last night. I mean, there were legitimate stories going. Complete with a plot, in vivid color, and great detail about my surroundings.

Meanwhile, when I'm awake, there are times where I can't remember my own phone number.

Why is this?

You can be as creative as you are in your dreams. It's a matter of learning how to access your creativity through tools and practice.Creativity course

Great book on memory excercises

Same author on building intelligence

Reading anything by Tony Buzan is a good thing

I've been trying this and I haven't had the control that I would like, but I have been setting the stage for my dreams and controlling what I dream about.

Before I go to bed, I verbally talk to myself about what I want to dream about and I have that dream. It's strange and weird, but pretty cool. I have had a few instances where I was able to control my actions and decision, but can't always do it.

But if I tell myself what to dream about and do remember a dream from that night, it's the one I told myself to dream about.

The first time I did this I was riding a motorcycle and fell off a cliff, even had the terifying physical sensation of falling. It just kept going and going, after what seemed like a few seconds I realized I was dreaming and was off the motorcycle, safe, and still dreaming. Falling and flying are triggers for me now, I often realize I'm dreaming and start to take control then. Another good way to tell you are dreaming is if you try to read something, but can't make out the words.

I always thought this was just up to chance, but it is fun. Im going to try to initiate this more, the 'look at your hands' and light switch triggers may help.

I'm now at the level where I'm working on entering other people's dreams, specifically Kate Capshaw so I can have the sechs with her.

Having never tried this, it kind of all sounds like a load of crap

however, the vast number of people who say it is not compels me to try

Couple of quick ideas for remembering your dreams:

Have something to write on within reach upon waking

Or better yet have a tape recorder ready.

I found the tape recorder handy for several reasons;

1. I don't have to open my eyes to 'record' my dreams

2. I used to listen to 'last night's' dreams as I got ready for bed.

3. I used to listen to my dreams on my drive to and from work.

Great idea on the tape recorder. I have one that I don't use because it doesn't have any PC connectivity that would be perfect for this.

this is going from interesting to flat out weird.
It gets even better.I used to have an alarm clock/radio/tape player.I set up a regular tape player so I could play a 'falling asleep' tape that would encourage remembering dreams.I then had a tape that I used as my alarm. It started out as a whispering suggestion to remember my dreams. Got progressively louder until I turned it off and recorded the dreams I remembered. After a while I could remember several dreams. C. B. De mill(sp) productions, casts of thousands...well not quite thousands, but you get the idea.

Several months ago I bought a MP3 player, loaded it with a 20 minute motivational speech by Tony Robbins, plugged some computer speakers into it, put the MP3 player on loop, and played it through the night every night for two weeks.Very interesting results.

This is the one you can turn into flying. It's awesome. I have to be on my stomach and i'll start to feel sort of a forward rolling motion while i'm still half awake. I can turn this into a flying dream immediately by just thinking about it. Going with the forward falling motion seems to trigger it.I've never investigated this I just have been able to do it for a while.I've also had the out of body experience part while flying - looking down at myself in the bed and heading on out the window. Very cool when it works.

I am getting better at remembering my dreams. I also was able to realize I was dreaming the other night. I have not been able to control anything while dreaming yet.

Within two weeks of doing that, I closed my bookstore, moved from New Jersey to South Carolina(didn't know a soul down here), and started a new career.
