Mad Cow! Holiday Computer building (2 Viewers)

Ya a very profitable visit with MC today. RAM and HD on the cheap and some sage advice on the OS that may save me $100-$200. Ordering video card now and that is the last of it unless I upgrade peripherals (monitor, keyboard, etc.). Will build this weekend hopefully.

Thanks, MC.

MC had a good idea which is to just make sure I got a good sequence as far as setting everything up.

Mobo to case

Processor to mobo

Power to case

Cooler

DVD

HD

SSD

Lay everything out first then install then power?

Vid card will be a few days still and then OS will follow. Wait til then or go ahead and put together everything and then install card and OS in a few days? I think MC was saying go ahead and install what I got.

Let's see. . .

CPU to Mobo

HSF to CPU/Mobo, including making sure to plug it into the mobo

RAM to mobo

PSU to case

Mobo to case

Opticals to case

HDD/SSD to case

GPU and other PCI/PCIe devices

Case wiring to mobo - you may need to move this up if other things like the PSU or HDD get in the way

Do no cables to the end. That way, you can really work on cable management. The only caveat there is if you plan on sneaking cables behind the mobo, but you can usually take off the other side of the case and have access there. I should have brought some cable mgt ties to work today, Pick, and I could have given you some.

Then do all cables for each device in turn would be my advice, but I will need to ponder this to make sure I didn't forget anything.

Is this the HSF?

Dang Pick, I about laughed when you said you were gaming at 1280X1024. You NEED a new monitor. 24" is the new minimum, my friend. :)

If your case has a cutout underneath the motherboard, then you can install the fan that comes with your processor and switch to the Archon when it arrives. Just don't overclock.

1280 x 1024, isn't that the old square monitors? :X

F me so I've been ignoring the monitor posts. Where we at as far as what to buy there?

(and quit makin fun)

It's Pick's lucky day. I had a fast 6.0 SATA 7200rpm 1 TB drive that I had bought before the whole flooding issue happened sitting in my office that I didn't need yet. So I charged him a 1 penny premium over what I paid in February and now he is almost ready to build. :)
You are a good man, MC!

Got hung up in registering to buy that card last night and didn't get it :wall: I've emailed them and complained but doubt I'll hear back.

Going to buy one of these monitors today:

Planar 27" for $240

Asus 24" for $180

Planar is 3" bigger and has a 20% better contrast ratio (1200:1 vs 1000:1). They are comparable in every other aspect.

The Asus is wildly popular but the Planar, while less popular also has stellar reviews.
Best deals as far as I can tell. Doing research on monitors is a pita.

I would recommend this for Drifter as well. It's a bit more pricey, but you get more pixels than most 27" monitors and it's an IPS panel.

Don't skimp on a monitor. It's what you stare at all day!

Dell 24" 1920x1200 IPS for $299.

The advantage of buying from Dell is that they have a solid return policy so if the panel shows up with a dead pixel you can send it back for a new one. NewEgg you have to have 6 or 7 dead pixels before they'll take it back. As such, I refuse to buy monitors from NewEgg.

Saw that one too but the contrast is lower than the Planar and the response time is 8ms for grey to gre - that seems slow and more of a tradeoff for resolution than seems wise, no?

That Dell monitor says 399 now.
It's been going on and off sale for a couple of weeks.
So for a good monitor are we targeting $200-300?I can be a little selective and use the old monitor for a few weeks I guess.
Yeah - after watching this for a couple weeks, you can get a pretty good one at $300 fairly regularly. I'm still hoping to see a jaw dropper below that point, but $240-$300 is probably the expectation with patience.

1200 WOW..... :)My monitor is the next thing I need. I have a 2 year old 20" HP 1600x900 max res I think. Nice monitor but I need to upgrade for sure

OK, got that monitor. HSF showed up today. Hopefully do this build this weekend.
Sweet. The :nerd: in me is living vicariously through you. I love setting-up my gear on the coffee table, turning on football, and taking a few hours to put together a PC. You might want to grab some cable ties -- gotta make sure your cabling is tidy! :nerd: :nerd: :nerd:

I agree. I love putting it all together.

Also, don't forget thermal paste (your Archon should come with it, but check when it arrives). It sucks to start your build and realize you don't have any (speaking from experience).

I have like 3 tubes of Arctic Silver at my office if not.

Tiger Direct has a sale going today that I just saw:

120 GB SSD for $99 after rebate My link

GIGABYTE GV-N56GOC-1GI GeForce GTX 560 - $155 after rebate
This 560 is overclocked, so I don't know what that does to the comparisons. But, the 560Ti compares to the Radeon 6870. The regular 560 is a lesser card. For this price, you can own a Radeon 6870.ETA - seems like a good price on the SSD, but note that it is SATA II, not SATA III.

About to get going here. No vid card yet maybe today so not doing the OS transfer yet. Trying to think of anything I need to backup before that. Use dropbox so not concerned with documents/pics and such.

Turned on imatch so I think itunes will be ok. But non-music has a little icloud with a slash through it icon next to it. Like it's saying movies aren't on icloud.

Anything I've purchased through itunes should be save, right?

So right now I'm rocking with an ATI 5850 - I'm looking to upgrade but is it worth it right now? My price range is probably capped off at ~$300. I took a look at Tom's HW charts and the 5850 isn't *terrible*, but since I'm considering upgrading my monitor why not get my frame rates + graphics as high as I can get them?

Thoughts?

Since you already have something workable, I'd wait a month or two and see what that 7xxx release by AMD does to the market.

5850 is a great card still. Hold.

OK putting the CPU onto the board is kind of scary. Feels like it's gonna break when you snap the arm down.

Anyway, the HSF I bought replaces the HSF they send with the CPU, right?

F me I think the HSF is too big. It either overlaps the RAM or barely overlaps the x16 slot. It's gotta go in the x16, right? I'm going for it but there might be physical contact between HSF and card.

Master nerds were supposed to not let this happen. :nerd:

I think they had you get a MICRO mobo... which probably should have been a regular mobo.

OK everything physically together. Anything special about hooking up the power cables? I've never done dual HDs before. Do I need to hook those up differently?

nope, just string em together on the same power line with the optical drive (if you have one). if you have a modular power supply even easier.

So the big stuff is I think taken care of. Not sure on some of the other cables. I got an SSD, and HD, and then the DVD burner. They all need to have SATA cables, right? Not sure which ones to click into on the mobo though.

And then I think I got all those little wires in the right place. Those tiny ones with only 1-2 prongs that go on the mobo.

Why does the mobo have fan plugs?

There should be a cpufan plug. Plug your CPU fan into it. You may also have sysfan plugs. If you do, and if your case came with fans that have the female version of that plug, plug as many case fans as you can into those. They'll allow your motherboard to take readings on the fan speed and allow it to slow the fans down if the system is cool.

Cool.

I forgot to put in the backplate before the mobo. Minor issue there I can fix easy I think.

Otherwise, just trying to watch some vids online before plugging in the power.
