What is the best value video card out there right now? I currently have a GTX 260 but the tom's hardware guide says don't upgrade unless you move up 3 tiers. Not sure when the prices will come down due to the 7 series release.
You'll find out in 2 weeks. At this point, I'd wait until then. Hopefully, that will at least have some affect on prices (although I'm doubtful).

Ran furmark at the same time as Prime 95 for a stress test. Case and CPU temperature never got out of control 37/45 but the GPU got up to 76c. I actually turned up the CPU fan just to see what affect it would have and GPU temp started to rise a bit more. I'm guessing this is because the rear fan is blowing in and when the CPU fan is low some of this air is finding it's way to the bottom (facing up) of the Vid card. When I turn up the CPU fan, that cuts down the air flow to the card.

Going to go with the side fan blowing in and probably the bottom fan blowing out to get the air being blown by the vid card out of the system without having the recycle all the way from the bottom of the case to the top.

Scored 1864 on the Furmark stress test with the GPU core at 975 - don't know if I'm going to get it to 1000 but now I have to try. That beat a couple 6950 scores, but I want to do it again, when I'm not also stressing the CPU to see what I can get.

Looking at this 560Link

I have a $20 credit at Tiger Direct that is about to expire (I really hate Tiger Direct btw) and there is a $25 rebate on it, so it brings it down to $140. Pretty good deal I think. I may order this in the morning, appreciate any feedback.

I have the 560TI Superclocked, which basically means it's already factory overclocked, but more importantly has two onboard fans since you can always overclock it yourself anyway. Got it for around $200.The straight 560 is a decent card and that's a good price but I would feel as though I wasn't reaching up high enough on the ladder considering the nextgen releases coming up. The 560TI or 6950 seem more in line with value vs current top tier and won't seem as old in 6 months.

My plan was to get one 560TI now and then hopefully see a price drop in the next few months on it and buy a second to run in SLI.

That said, that's me. If you're fine with having a good card a little on the older side, you're getting a good price.

bump - thoughts on this monitor - I'm not 100% sure what is considered good compared to bad with brightness, response etchttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059
That's the one I mentioned yesterday that seems universally loved. Good speed, good brightness, good contrast ratio at a good price. To do better, you'd need to bump up in size, LED backlit or newer generation panel (color and energy savings), or resolution (the priciest upgrade from this level).

What's the deal with fan controllers? My Zalman CPU cooler came with one. Will the MB override the manual setting if it needs to in order to compensate for CPU heat?

Is it worth it to buy a fan controller if I expand my case fans beyond the 3 that my MB has plugs for? I know I can plug them straight into the PSU and run them at 100% all the time but a basic 4 or 5 dial controller can be had for $25 or so. Same question on those, however - when you go with a fan controller do you lose Motherboard speed control and have to do everything manually?

$165 560 after rebate plus another $35 off with coupon code HARDOCP1228B Plus you can use the new customer code at New Egg for another $10 off if you want to set up a new account.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but didn't want to start a new thread with such a simple question.

My BIL just installed a new Western Digital 2TB Black drive and he warned me about the temp it is running at and that I should think about a new case fan. I have a liquid cooled system and another fan on the side. The front temp gauge reads 35c for the CPU and 41-42c for the HDD is this an ok range? I have seen so many different opinions posted on this.

If not, is the better way to go a case fan or one of those HD fans that installs right on the drive?

So that one has the LED backlighting which means colors should be better and it should be more energy efficient than the other. That said, it is not as universally loved as the other one. Statwise, they are comparable.

My front fan blows right on/over my 3.5" bays. Is yours not set up that way?A HDD only fan seems overkill to me unless you have like a 10,000 RPM fan or something.

Why don't you just pick me a monitor in the 23-24" range for under 225. :PI am so lost - why would backlit not be better AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH

Theoretically LED backlit is better but for some reason the user base doesn't like it as much as the other. Read the reviews for the less than 5 egg ratings and see what people don't like and if it's something you could live with. Zasada doesn't like buying monitors from New Egg because they won't accept a return for dead pixels. That was part of the reason I went the Best Buy route. Amazon would also be a choice for easy returns.

Ok I was just using newegg to search before I decided where to buy. I have an older HP that I really like but figure this would be my last upgrade for a while, of course I don't think it would fit on my desk

Well it took some time but Microcenter's i3 2100 & mobo combo finally came back. Just got myself the CPU for $99 and $50 off a motherboard. In-store only.

If you're looking for the cheapest option possible, it's hard to argue against this CPU and this mobo for $99AR+tax. It doesn't have DVI or HDMI onboard, but if you go with an external graphics card, it's a pretty awesome value (considering that the CPU alone goes for $125+ on NewEgg).

I'll put together a post later with my HPTC build. I'm going functionally fanless and w/o moving parts. Should be fun.

Hah, I just saw this deal and came here to post it for you.Too bad Microcenter doesn't have this board (SATA III, USB 3.0, HDMI out). The graphics processor on the 2100 is plenty for the htpc, no real need to add more heat. Can't beat that value, though.

Heh, I went with this board, which is pretty much Gigabyte's version of the one you linked. A multitude of video outputs (I'll be using HDMI), SATA3, and USB3. On the latter, it even has internal connectors for USB3 so I can have front-panel access on the case.More later on the build. I'm pretty stoked.

What do you guys feel the better deal is?

WD green caviar 2 tb for 139.99

Crucial M4 128 Gb Sata III for 184.99

Never posted my final build. With the monitor and AR, I finished right around $1k. Pretty happy. Next steps in 6-12 months will probably be to buy 2nd GPU for SLI and replace the MoBo with one that supports SLI :wall:

Great monitor deal at Newegg:

HannsG 27.5", 3MS, 1920x1200, superbright 400 cd/m2 resolution monitor for $240 with the discount code. Kind of pissed this is out now. I would have done this in a heartbeat.

That is the monitor that consists of 2/3 of my 3X1 Eyefinity setup. I like it. I got 2 dead pixels in one, but they only show up on a black background and are positioned in my setup so that I never see them (in the periphery).

Nonsense. I true :nerd: would find a way for more LCD real estate.
I agree but no way I'm buying a new desk etc, I have a stupid corner unit. It's nice but I'm limited without buying a new one. It's something like this but not exactly but it has the monitor area "set"

Taking a hammer to the useless CD case holder sections down? You could run some serious 5760X1200 on that bad boy.

It's not exactly like that but you bring up a good point. RESEARCHING DEMOLITION TONIGHT.... Hope the monitor is still available tommorrow. So protection worth it?

You know it. Assuming it is similar to that, I bet you can remove the retaining screws underneath and just have the desk, then BAM! you :nerd: it up big time. :hifive:

Ok a little knife work and I'm set...... So I don't need to use hdmi right? I know the difference that dvi is video of hdmi so I'm good keeping my current cable right.... Thanks

DVI is fine. Both it and HDMI are digital and will provide the same results.

I prefer dvi simply because when you use hdmi with an amd card, it tries to take over your sound output because their video cards can do audio as well.

Monitor ordered. Thanks Drifter, Cow, et al.

One more dumb question - the old days dual monitor was easy (just do vga and dvi :P ). Should I bother keeping my 20 in hooked up? If so can I do DVI, HDMI? Can Iplug the old monitor into the on board graphics card?

I'm leaning to it's not really worth it since I'm going to a 27 inch screen.

TIA

That depends. I would just do it as an extended desktop if so, not stretching the screen over there for obvious reasons. If you get a couple more of those bad boys, well, then you are :pickle: ;)

Right I was going to just do extended dekstop. Problem is the powercolor 6790 has 1 dvi, 1 hdmi and 1 mini out.So I need to run dvi to the old monitor since it doesn't have hdmi. Then just run hdmi or get a mini to dvi converter? It will work the same as the old dvi and vga setups right? I want to keep my speaker setup the way it is that's why I was concerned with hdmi going to the monitor. I'm assuming I can disable the sound through the HDMI - would have to lookDemo completed - desk still a mess but demo is done :excited: Hard part was a couple nails holding the shelf backing on and cutting it :) Managed to keep the shelving on each end of the desk  Thanks you MC!https://picasaweb.google.com/109155151455425057515/Desk?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCPSx6tyioZncQA&feat=directlink

One thing is my Internet runs real slow with this build. Not sure why.
Make sure your mb drivers are up to date (assuming the mb has the built in ethernet)Monitor is set to be delivered tomorrow - hope to nerd it up with some BF later.Need a new game I think :excited:

Finished off Starcraft2 on hard. Trying brutal. Might be time to load up Pirates and/or Rome while I wait for Diablo.

Been able to play Empire: Total War, Just Cause 2 and Homefront with all settings maxed out. Pretty nice.

With the exception of the rear exhaust, the machine runs pretty quiet. If I crank up that exhaust and the CPU and GPU all get working, watch out, because this thing sounds like it's ready for takeoff. Sicne I normally am gaming with headphones on so that's not a big deal.

You SOOOO need to go 5760X1200 with that.

Oh - I have a work spreadsheet that's just a complete monster. When I run it on my work laptop or work desktop, it takes around 30 minutes to process. On this machine? Less than a minute. Time to introduce that proof of concept to IT to get a new desktop cruncher.
