Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (3 Viewers)

The voicemail where the dude is crying because Te'o is in his room with another girl is astonishing.
Wait, you think that's a dude changing his voice to sound like a chick?
Definitely.
You clicked on that Youtube of the actual guy singing in his own voice, right?
Say what now? I went to deadspin and listened to the audio.
I posted a link earlier where Tuiasosopo is talking and singing in his own voice.I saw this in the comments on the page where Deadspin has the voicemail audio up. I think it's spot on. I assume this is the last day we'll hear a lot about this story, but eventually someone is going to walk in on Te'o blowing a dude.
My working theory:There has never been an active player in major college sports (All-American level football, basketball) or professional athlete (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) who has been openly gay. As a gay man myself, I have long hoped that an All-Star caliber player with a big fan base will be the first to come out during his playing career. If I were Te'o I would not want to be that trailblazer for several reasons and don't want him to be forced to come out; the first athlete should come out on his own terms.I tend to think Lennay's "death" was Te'o breaking up with Ronaiah. I think that Ronaiah was devastated by the breakup and threatened to blackmail Te'o if he didn't do certain things such as publicly acknowledge his "girlfriends" death at the Michigan game and likely a number of other things we haven't yet heard about. When Deadspin published their factual, non-speculative article ND public relations and Te'o's agent went into crisis mode. In the coming days Matthew Hiltzik would be hired as he is the best crisis communications/positive spin guy in the country. Te'o's team and Ronaiah likely negotiated a deal where Ronaiah would confess to everything and Te'o would not lash out against Ronaiah in the media. Ronaiah likely signed a very solid confidentiality agreement in exchange for compensation. Te'o appears on Katie Couric's show (Why Katie? Hiltzik also represents her) and Te'o's story of being the victim is showcased to the American public. The story fades into the background. Why am I so confident that this scenario is true? Simple: Te'o's answer to the question of why he didn't ever visit Lennay in the hospital; "it never occurred to me." That answer is the most revealing thing Te'o has said and in my opinion is very telling.

I tried to post a link to that picture too but that link just takes people to the actual article. For those who are confused look at top the photo posted in the comments. Pretty funny. Also, ESPN's comment is ridiculous. "Their veracity could not be independently confirmed, but the source insisted they are genuine." The headline for ESPN's article is just "Teo's phone logs: Hours of calls to "Kekua"". I guess if somebody insists that something is genuine it's ok to take their word for it. I mean they did insist.

That's not a bad theory, but why let those voicemails come out? They're absolutely humiliating for Te'o.

The bolded part is what I have a hard time with. So all this emotional crazy #### happens and then in a matter of days they come up with a settlement or agreement to make it go away for Manti?I dont pretend to know the real deal, but I would still vote that manti got duped, and that it was Ronaiah, who is insane, most or all of the time on the other end of the phone.

Then again sometimes when I call customer service I am able to imagine the clerk scheduling service for my A/C to be hot and I am able to get a semi.

That's not a bad theory, but why let those voicemails come out? They're absolutely humiliating for Te'o.
This whole story is humiliating, and he could prove it happened in less than an hour. Actual, redacted phone records, and 1800flowers on record saying they delievered flowers. It's pretty much over at that point, but they're doing taped shows, private interviews, and handing out unconfirmable information and passing it off as proof. They don't look like people trying to get the truth out. They look like someone still trying to cover up something, and if this humiliating story is the cover story, what else could be underneath? What would happen if Te'o printed off his phone records, took a sharpie to what he didn't want us to see, and posted it on Twitter? I'd believe him at that point. I was ready to believe him yesterday when I assumed that's what Schaap was going on about.

Just think, if he does make it into the NFL, he will get absolutely hammered by opposing fansFor instance, if the stadium doesn't sell out that game, people will play "Where is Manti's GF sitting?"Heck, Jacksonville will probably include her in attendance counts

For those on the secret gay relationship side of the debate, what is the most reasonable explanation for Tuiasosopo emailing his former classmate, the real life "Lennay Kekau," to get a customized "penny pic" type picture in December 2012?

That's a good point, and there probably isn't one. That entire piece of this story hasn't been reported on enough. It would seem to indicate the potential that what Te'o is saying is true...he thought she was dead, then "she" called him saying she wasn't, and "she" sends a pic of her as proof.

Local radio show had an interview today with the NYT reporter who penned the story of how ESPN got scooped even though they had this news for 10 days. He said what's even more baffling than their decision to sit on the story until they could get an interview with Te'o is the fact that they are actively pushing the "Te'o was the victim" narrative fairly uncritically even today. He said didn't want to speculate on why this is, but did point out that ESPN has been criticized in the past (including by Deadspin) for being close to sports organizations and agents, often helping each do their negotiating with calculated leaks on contract issues and such.
I assumed this was common knowledge by this point. ESPN isn't a sports news outlet. They're a sports entertainment outlet.

That's a helluva point. I was going to say the gay guy I quoted above had it right, and maybe Ronaiah was trying to blackmail him again. That could explain it, but then why did they meet after the USC game as Te'o told Schaap? Can't be that angle, so I don't have an explanation.Speaking of that meeting at the USC game: Te'o claims he met Ronaiah's father, a preacher. How do they meet, in person, and neither talks about Lennay? In that same interview, Te'o claimed Ronaiah and Lennay were cousins and tight like "Bonnie and Clyde." I'll make the assumption the father didn't know anything about Te'o losing a girlfriend or maybe even the grandmother, but Te'o doesn't say anything to this man who obviously would've known his girlfriend? Besides Ronaiah and some 9 year old, mute girl, this was the only person from the family Te'o even met.

I love that this rube sat there talking to a woman breathing heavily on her death bed...who was actually a guy, on the sofa snoring.

Well, I think at this point I think it is fair to say Tuiasosopo is gay, correct? So we are halfway there and if Te'o is also gay then it isn't a major leap that the two of them concocted a way to have a long distance, social media relationship without exposing their mutual gayness. Getting the pic helped with the twitter beard. It seems like it was gay Samoan social media role playing that spiraled out of control. My guess is we are going to start seeing a lot more of this type of stuff.

Is it fair to say that? I haven't followed this story as closely as many of you.

Samoan culture apparently has a third gender called fa'fafine...It seems likely that Tuiasosopo is fa'fafine, and it also makes me speculate that Te'o was in a relationship with him, but knew that our culture, and especially the world of football, would just label him as "gay"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fa%27afafine

Fa'afafine may be viewed as a third gender specific to Samoan culture.

Fa'afafine are the gender liminal, or third-gendered people of Samoa. A recognized and integral part of traditional Samoan culture, fa'afafine, born biologically male, embody both male and female gender traits. Their gendered behavior typically ranges from extravagantly feminine to mundanely masculine.[1]

Fa'afafine are known for their hard work and dedication to the family, in the Samoan tradition of tautua. Ideas of the family in Samoa and Polynesia are markedly different from Western constructions of family, and include all the members of a sa, or a communal family within the fa'amatai family systems.[3]

It is a mistake to attribute a Western interpretation and mislabel the fa'afafine as "gay" or "homosexual". In Samoa, the people claim that there is no such thing as being "gay" or "homosexual."[1] Fa'afafine, as a third gender, have sexual relationships almost exclusively with men who do not identify as Fa'afafine, and sometimes with women. This third gender is so well accepted in Samoan culture that most Samoans state that they have friendship relationships with at least one Fa'afafine. Traditionally Fa'afafine follow the training of a women's daily work in an Aiga.[1][4]

Perhaps they expected that their relationship would be exposed when Te'o went pro so Tuiasosopo came up with the plan to make Lennay come back from the dead.I think Tuiasosopo is gay but I don't see any evidence that Te'o is at this point.

I'm not sure that he's nuts. He's the son of a pastor and may have thought that it was his only way to have a relationship with a guy.

Ronaiah is definitely nuts. Anybody who does this stuff has to be messed up in the head. Not buying the gay angle though. 2 out of those 3 voicemails sounded like a chick to me. Teo's answer to being asked if he was gay seemed pretty genuine to me.

Where can these be found?

To address GPJ's question from a few pages back, being duped to this degree is FAR worse than being complicit in the scam.

Your middle linebacker typically has to be one of the smartest guys on your defense.

The question for GMs becomes, does naive = unintelligent in a football context.

What he did was nuts, I'm just saying that someone who is gay and unable to come out because of family/religious reasons can go to ridiculous lengths to have a relationship with someone.

He must've had a really easy courseload, or someone "helping" him out. Which isn't to throw shade at ND specifically, but the entire college/athlete system.

You can't hold a college and it's athletes responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole college and athletic system? And if the whole college and athletic system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to Teo, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!
