Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (1 Viewer)

The more stories that come out about Tuiososopo the more it sounds like Manti was a legitimate victim of this. ESPN has a story about him doing this to someone else. Now it also appears that despite being the victim of the hoax, Manti also embellished the story on his own for the cameras. He then continued the lie after figuring out it was a hoax and he probably done that because of embarrassment. He knows he embellished and he thought continuing the lie would make things cleaner not realizing this would get out.
If you're on spring break and your girlfriend is dying of cancer, do you fly OVER the city where she's dying to get home to Hawaii?
According to some of his teammates, he didnt really treat her as his girlfriend, he just played that up for the cameras. Maybe she was just another (fake, imaginary) sidepiece to him that he talked to on the phone and didnt really love her. He flew home instead of seeing her cuz she was just another chick. But he played up the dying girlfriend angle to the media cuz hes a media whore. Like I said, he definitely embellished ALOT.
This is EXACTLY where I am: He thinks of this girl as nothing more than a sidepiece, albeit he probably enjoys talking to her on the phone and emailing her. It's probably a nice enough distraction from football, he gets to have a girl tell him how awesome he is, but he doesn't really have to care about her or put in much work. He gets "duped" because he doesn't really give a crap about her; he doesn't catch the holes in her story because her doesn't really care that much. So she gets sick, and she dies, and he gets to go on television and play the poor lovelorn boyfriend, and everybody loves him all the more. Score! He plays it up to the media, and he loves it.Now he gets to tell the SAME media folks that he got "bamboozelled." (more love! more attention!) Sure, if willful blindness is getting bamboozelled, I guess he could fit in this box. Whatever. Guy is a weirdo either way. Anyway, that's my take. He wasn't in on it. He just gleefully went along for the ride. So he was in on something.

Because the Notre Dame AD didnt invite the Notre Dame Media department and audio/visual club into the investigation?
:goodposting: "Notre Dame" isn't an individual person. It's possible for one small group of Notre Dame to be involved in the investigation and have knowledge of the situation while another small group is still in the dark and approves something like that.

This is the part I don't understand - if he were indeed a victim of a hoax, why did he continue bringing her up on his own in public? Not only that but apparently after finding out that it was a hoax his father was involved in making up a background story of him meeting her at a Stanford game in 2009 and saying she visited him in Hawaii. If he was duped, wouldn't a normal person when she was brought up just say 'I'm sorry, but it's too difficult to talk about' and leave it at that?

I actually hope he's gay because the alternative is that he's a POS I wouldn't want on the team I root for.

I see two alternatives:- he's gay and helped create the fake girlfriend as cover or- he was duped, but didn't really care about his so-called girlfriend. However, he then used the story to make up more lies to gain attention and sympathy.

This is a good strategy by Manti - if he knows Tui and is friends with him. Get Tui to take the fall himself 100% and say Manti was completely duped. Then Tui throws him some money once he signs that NFL contract. Everyone is happy. That's probably why everyone is silent right now. They are figuring out all the details and how to respond to the inconsistencies.
So if I'm understanding you correctly, you think two 22 year olds who currently under the harshest imaginable light of public scrutiny decided their best plan of action would be to convince this female friend to lie for them to the press about who was involved (why she would do this I'm not sure) so that Te'o would look better and then he'd eventually pay off Tui for his work in finding this fiend to who fake ratted him out to OTL. Because hey, they've been doing such a bang-up job of hiding their lies and identities and connections from the press so far, why not press their luck, right?
Correct.

Story was interesting when it showed how lame the media is. Now that Manti comes up with a lamer excuse that is being bought you just shake your head how stupid people are. Last thoughts: how long can Manti's own words establish the timeframe of the alleged relationship? That timeframe will also show the absurdity of his claims. He claims a "love" relationship for X months and never met her in person? You gotta call B.S. on that.
I picture Manti sitting in the agents office right now with a huge timeline board of what went down and them desperately trying to figure out how to answer each plot hole.

I can't wait until draft day, when he tells everyone he's been selected by the NFL's new Moon-based franchise and just signed a lease agreement on a 3-bedroom place with views of the Sea of Tranquility. Then, he can excuse himself so he can go take his electrowhocarniofloox lesson.

How did the dupe start then? Because his version of how they met has already been blown up.

Exactly. This was about when they realized the ruse would be up soon. Time to start working on their cover story.ETA: These alleged conversations will be traced back to Tui's phone number, so he knows he's going to have to take the heat. Also, if he implicates a "cousin" he can more easily decline to identify her because she's family. Of course, there is no cousin. It was him on the phone with Te'o because there was never any girl involved.
:tinfoilhat: :lmao:Except that there really was a girl involved.
Yeah, but she didn't exist.

Better call Saul.

If it was a dupe, my guess it started with her tweeting a picture of herself, and telling him how awesome she thought he was. They exchanged messages, then started talking on the phone. He then tells people he met her after a game because he doesn't want to sound like a loser weirdo who is talking to a girl that he's never even met in person. It's not a hard stretch to imagine: About 5 years ago, my buddy was regularly hooking up with a chick he met on Craigslist. They told people they met through "a friend of a friend."

Maybe they didn't tell her to lie. Maybe Tui and Te'o decided back in early December they needed a fake confession to back up the story they'd tell when the levy broke, since they knew it was close to breaking.

Yeah, but she didn't exist.
Sure she did:
[Reagan] Mauia said he met Kekua through Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man identified in a Deadspin expose as orchestrating the fake Lennay character.
These two are the ####ed up ones. Maybe this chick is start struck, or a football player stalker and likes the attention from them. Maybe this Tuiasolopo kid is the #### one and was using her to get close to these guys then getting his rocks off with scamming them. Who knows what's going through their twisted minds, but it seems to me that that Manti was at least in contact with an actual female.Unless of course Reagan Mauia is on the payroll too. :tinfoilhat:

Pathological liar who loves attention? I'm not really sure. No matter what happens he is completely and irredeemably full of ####.

Do we have any evidence whatsoever that the girl Mauia claims he met has anything to do with this story?

You owe me $50.
really bro, really?
Fifty real dollars says that this discussion is happening between Te'o and his team right now. They're going to figure out what they can definitively blame on the hoax, and what needs to be copped to under the explanation of "I was embarrassed, so I said those things to protect myself."

:goodposting: I see these as the only two plausible explanations based on what we know so far. I suppose that a lot of the questions about him never seeing her and not knowing basic details about her life could also easily be explained by him not actually caring about her -- in contrast to what he said publicly.

Fair question. Is there any evidence that she didn't? There is evidence that there is a woman that used the fake name to meet another football player. Is it crazy for me to think this same girl also met Manti and talked to him on the phone? `It's entirely possible that you're right and Manti and Tuiasospo have scammed me too. It's a crazy ### story. I'm still on the Manti got fished + lied side because of the Notre Dame AD. I have a hard time believing he would put his own credibility on the line for a kid that is leaving the school.

Why is ESPN running with Te'o is the victim angle?
It makes them look a little bit better I guess. That was cringe worth that shelly smith ran an audio of an anonymous source talking about duping Manti. You would think by now they would have learned their lesson. For Manti its simple to prove you were duped. produce the texts, emails and phone records. Problem solved.

COuld someone answer this please. If Notre Dame thought that Manti was being set up for some extortion attempt like the AD suggested, then why not go to the authorities? Wouldnt that be protocol? Notre Dame has some serious explaining to do as well but from the AD statements today they are checking out.

:goodposting: I was about to post the same as I read about this video/support for the fundraising. Pretty sure the AV club at Penn State was unaware of Jerry Sandusky and the cover up, just like I doubt many people aside from the top of the athletic department food chain knew about the Manti hoax.I don't even like ND, but some of this "proof" gets a little silly when Notre Dame is treated like it is a Borg where every one in the institution is in on it.

I find the story itself to be pretty intriguing. Every new fact/detail that comes out just seems to compound how strange this whole thing was. Its also kind of disturbing to see how much joy some people are taking in this. So a young kid screwed up. Some of the jokes and one liners on Wednesday were funny, but 48 hours later and people are still trying way to hard to make fun of the situation. More sad than funny at this point.

The pause will be until you watch his tape....
which was really really bad in the last/biggest game he played
1 game versus 3 years of tape? Seriously? His bad game came around this time evryone was on to him too...coincidence?
so take my bet?
Ok and how do we go about paying etc? I'm not tracking anoyone down and I dont care enough ot be on here harrassing you.I win you use a SIG I create and if I lose you do the same, deal?
lmfao

How is he able to duck this for 48 hours? It will only make it worse when he resurfaces.
How? I doubt he cares about much more than his draft position at this point. Are GMs going to go, "Well, if he'd talked right away he'd be a first-rounder, but since he waited 3 days, I think we'll pass?"

I'm probably behind on the details, and I haven't seen the AD's statement today, but I'd assume and actual crime would need to have occured before going to the police. Did that Tuiosisopo guy actually do anything illegal?

By his own admission now, he never met her. The AD clearly said that "met" in this sense meant meeting online.

The hoax began crumbling around the edges late last year. On Nov. 4, 2012, an "U'ilani Rae Kekua," supposedly Lennay's sister, popped up on Twitter under the name @uilanirae. Manti Te'o immediately tweeted out the following:LinkTe'o also wished U'ilani a happy Thanksgiving on Nov. 22.
Ok, let's assume that I believe Te'o got hoaxed - can someone please explain why he would text about her sister as if he had actually met her?

 He never actually said that he met the sister. Maybe she felt "real" to him because they texted so often?

Fair enough. It's still very difficult to believe that he maintained this contact with her sister by text only two months after she died and also never tried to call her parents after she died.

Real to him seems to mean different things than what it means to the rest of us.

Well, he does say realist person, which I take to mean that she's very down to Earth. He didn't say realest, as in most real or actually existing. So that's consistent with the story we've been going with. /ND AD

I don't go to the authorities every time I get a scam e-mail. One time I received a fake BOA check and didn't go to the authorities, I took it to BOA for them to investigate as they saw fit.

Apparently, "Lennay Kekua" tried to rekindle their love in the December 6 phone call where Te'o found out she wasn't dead. No, she had to fake her death because she was eluding drug dealers, according to Te'o (as reported by the Honolulu Star Advertiser).
