Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (1 Viewer)

How many of us showed up at Shining Path's funeral?
Everyone who spent hours nightly with him on the phone, listening to him breath until he fell asleep, was there if I'm not mistaken.
The point is that you form bonds with people on the Internet in places like this or other places, but it is difficult sometimes to cross those lines into "real life" and it is especially difficult to cross over into "real life" when something tragic happens.Or at least it seems that way to me. I know I would like to meet some of my ifriends, and I consider them to be true friends, but there are just times/places where it seems weird and wrong to meet them. The funeral of the person I really only know online (and even over the phone) is at the top of the list of places where it just seems most wrong to first see them face to face.

Te'o Admits to Lying

NEW YORK -- Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o has told Katie Couric that he briefly lied about his online girlfriend after discovering she didn't exist, while maintaining that he had no part in creating the hoax.

Pressed by Couric to admit that he was in on the deception, Te'o said he believed that his girlfriend Lennay Kekua had died of cancer and didn't lie about it until December.

"Katie, put yourself in my situation. I, my whole world told me that she died on Sept. 12. Everybody knew that. This girl, who I committed myself to, died on Sept. 12," Te'o said in an interview to air Thursday on Couric's syndicated talk show. A segment of the interview with Te'o and his parents was broadcast Wednesday on "Good Morning America."

The Heisman Trophy runner-up said he only learned of the hoax when he received a phone call in December from a woman saying she was Kekua.

"Now I get a phone call on Dec. 6, saying that she's alive and then I'm going be put on national TV two days later. And to ask me about the same question. You know, what would you do?" Te'o said.

An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 10.

Te'o's father defended his son when Couric pointed out that many people don't believe the Irish star, suspecting he used the situation for personal gain.

"People can speculate about what they think he is. I've known him 21 years of his life. And he's not a liar. He's a kid," Brian Te'o said with tears in his eyes.

On Tuesday, the woman whose photo was used as the "face" of the Twitter account of Te'o's supposed girlfriend says the man allegedly behind the hoax confessed and apologized to her.

Diane O'Meara told NBC's "Today" show that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo used pictures of her without her knowledge in creating a fake woman called Lennay Kekua.

briefly lied

I had sex with Joe Bryant on the deck of a bryant boat, and the sex was great!!!!

it only took me a few seconds to type that, so I only briefly lied

"People can speculate about what they think he is. I've known him 21 years of his life. And he's not a liar. He's a kid," Brian Te'o said with tears in his eyes.

evidence would suggest otherwise

he "crafted the narrative" aka lied, about many of the details of the relationship, and he just admitted to "breifly" lying (which as I already covered just means lying) about it after he knew she was not dead.

so clearly, at least at some of the time, he is a liar

I feel much better knowing that this "brief" moment is only time in his life that he has lied. Now I believe unflinchingly that he played no part in this ridiculous hoax.

It seems clear there was a hoax that he was not in on. It also seems clear he lied about this relationship. The main questions are how much did he lie, did he really consider her his girlfriend and feel this strong emotional and spiritual attachment, or did he play all that up for the attention?I am not sure we will ever KNOW that, it may just be people's opinions from here on in.

It seems there was definitely some degree of real affection for her in the note from the flowers. Whether that was embellished for TV, Probably some. We learn this from Hollywood.

I'm pretty sure he's going to start dating the actual girl who's picture was used as "Lennay", just to make this whole thing even weirder.
That would be an awesome twist. Is she single?
Depends upon where he gets drafted.
Producers need to try to get Te'o signed up for The Bachelor - Online Edition.
And make sure he doesn't see any of the contestants until the finale when he finds out he's about to get railed by a burly trucker named Scooter.

The sex was bad?
awfulthere's blame on both sidesit was like 2 guys slapping each other with pretty short garden hoses
But did you buy a boat? I have heard that you can get banned just for visiting Bryan Boats and not buying one. Or was the happy-fun time in exchange for not having to buy a boat?

It was on Al Toon's boat

Manti Te'o and the woman whose picture was used to portray his fake girlfriend appeared in separate television interviews Wednesday to describe their roles in the hoax, while what a source said are phone records may give credence to Te'o's assertion that he spent hours on the phone with someone he thought was Lennay Kekua.

A source close to Te'o gave ESPN's Jeremy Schaap documents that the source says are Te'o's AT&T phone records from May 11 to Sept. 12, the date that the woman was supposed to have died. Their veracity could not be independently confirmed, but the source insisted they are genuine.

The records show that in that four-month span -- when Te'o has said he believed Lennay Kekua to be in a Los Angeles hospital recovering from an accident and being treated for cancer -- Te'o made and received more than 1,000 calls totaling more than 500 hours in length from the same number in the 661 area code. The 661 area code covers Lancaster, which is part of Los Angeles County. The source told Schaap that Te'o believed the 661 phone number in question was Kekua's.

Of these calls, 110 were more than 60 minutes in length, including several that were several hundred minutes long. In an ESPN interview Friday, and in interviews with both ESPN and Sports Illustrated last fall, Te'o said he was on the phone "every single night" with a person he believed to be Kekua, often for long stretches late at night.

On Friday, he said to Schaap, "I'd be on the phone. And she had complications from the accident and, she said the only thing that could help her sleep was if I was on the phone. So I would be on the phone, and I'd have the phone on the whole night."

From the records, it does not appear that Te'o was on the phone every single night for the entire night. But the volume of calls and their duration is sizable.

Nobody has stepped forward as the voice of the woman who posed as Te'o's girlfriend.
I don't see how anyone can think he was still behind this hoax now.

h anybody with half a brain that read the article can see he was in on it.

I don;t think he is behind it, but the reason people still can is he has lied a ton. When you lie about stuff then later it bites you on the ### people don't believe you. He is coming off to me now as handled and in damage control mode, which is understandable but it does not seem sincere.Still damage control mode will probably mitigate further damage and over time some other shiny object will come up and he'll be fine, but there will always be doubters.

Even if he's not behind it, he's still a total dope. I'm not sure what's worse actually.
Being a dope is worse.Well, whomever spent all this time rooking a famous college football player for no apparent financial end is probably the biggest loser in this situation.
He's trying to make it big in the Christian music scene. I bet his next album goes triple frankincense.

Exactly. How do we know he wasn't just calling Tuiasosopo?

I could totally buy someone pranking him and him falling for it...but who is going to prank someone for three freaking years? And all for the lulz? That's ridiculous.
Deadspin has a story up that basically chronicles the twitter history of Tuiasosopu pretending to be this chick...it's truly insane. The guy was really really into it. Creating other fake personas that would respond to her, responding to her from his personal account, etc. Kid is a total whackjob. He was treating this like it was his job or something.
Where's the girl Teo was supposedly talking to for 500 hours? Tuiasosopu spent a lot of time on this but the majority of the effort would have been doing the actual talking on the phone.

Washington Redskins duped by woman with fake online identity
The memo went up on the wall of the Washington Redskins' locker room in the middle of December, a stern warning from Phillip Daniels, the team's director of player development, in the wake of an unsettling revelation. His message did not waver: Stay away from @RedRidnH00d. Avoid her on Twitter. Avoid her on Instagram. Do not converse with this person on any social media platform. She is not who she claims to be."Once we found out the person wasn't real, we went from there," Daniels told NFL.com when contacted late last week about the situation.Yes, at around the same time Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o claims he learned he was part of an Internet-related hoax, at least four Redskins players also became aware of their own role in a completely separate, coincidentally timed and ultimately less harmful saga of false online identities.NFL.com has learned that NFL security conducted an investigation into a situation involving a woman, known by the pseudonym Sidney Ackerman, who used pictures of an Internet adult entertainer, C.J. Miles, to establish dialogues with pro athletes. On Monday, shortly after it became clear to the operator of the Twitter account in question that NFL.com planned to publish this story, the account was no longer available. Sidney Ackerman's Facebook page also was deleted on the same day.According to multiple sources, the conversations occurred mostly through Twitter's direct messaging function. But in some instances, "Ackerman" also sent separate photos of Miles to players' cell phones, never suggesting the photos were not her own, as conversations endured on and off for months."If you think about it, a lot of them are single guys, and they see somebody who looks good in a picture or something," Daniels said. "In many cases, it involves someone who is a fan of the team, so they'll start talking about the team. You have to recognize that something just isn't right."But you're talking about a lot of guys who are single. I don't fault the guys. I fault the people who are doing this crazy stuff, causing these problems."Here's what the team eventually did learn about "Ackerman," according to sources: She is indeed a woman and a diehard Redskins fan. She did not, however, ever ask for money or benefits, nor did she attempt to threaten or exploit any of the players."Sidney Ackerman," a pseudonym used by the scam artist behind the @RedRidnH00d Twitter account, doctored photos of adult entertainer C.J. Miles in an attempt to gain players' trust. (Via Facebook/)On multiple occasions, several Redskins players attempted to arrange meetings with "Ackerman," but none of them succeeded, Daniels said. The numerous failed attempts led to suspicion, and Daniels then received some independent information about the possibility that "Ackerman" indeed was a fake.Unlike Te'o, none of the Redskins players involved became emotionally attached to "Ackerman," instead pursuing her out of nothing more than physical appeal, sources close to the situation said. "Ackerman" also sent at least one player a pornographic video of Miles, which she also claimed to be of herself. On certain occasions, "Ackerman" also doctored photos of Miles in an attempt to personalize them and provide the athletes with a sense that she indeed was the person she claimed to be."I think it was all about attention," Daniels said. "I don't think it was any of the other stuff. It was just about being able to talk to them, pretending to be someone they aren't. It was never a situation where guys were giving money or anything like that.""Ackerman" had collected more than 17,000 followers on Twitter, which created a sense of legitimacy in the minds of players, according to sources. However, her account was not verified by the social media platform, which currently is the only formal way in which Twitter users can confirm an identity. While the Redskins' locker room surely is on notice as a result of December's findings regarding @RedRidnH00d, it is clear this issue of athletes falling for social media hoaxes persists. There's no better example than this one:Last Friday, NFL.com discovered another unverified Twitter account, @RideAndDieChick, which also used a photo of Miles as its Twitter avatar. NFL.com was able to confirm that separate people run each of these accounts (@RideAndDieChick and @RedRidnH00d) independently of one another. Perhaps most unsettling about the latest account, which started operating within the past two months: As of Saturday afternoon, @RideAndDieChick was being followed by 22 verified NFL players and six verified NBA players. As of Tuesday, however, the account no longer was active.During a dialogue with @RideAndDieChick through the direct message function Saturday, the person operating the account claimed to have had conversations with at least three notable professional football players. The identity of those players has been withheld because the conversations could not be independently verified. The operator of @RideAndDieChick deactivated this Twitter account shortly after communicating with NFL.com. (Via Twitter/)In Saturday's conversation, the @RideAndDieChick operator claimed to be a "new sports fan," although the user's timeline, which was filled with requests for athletes to follow the account, suggests the user instead is very knowledgeable about sports."People think I want popularity, but I just wanna make star friends that I wouldn't be able to meet in the real world," @RideAndDieChick wrote, maintaining the fabricated identity throughout the conversation. In the wake of these situations on Twitter, it stands to wonder if the NFL will begin making efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of social media. At the NFL's Rookie Symposium each year, rookies often are taught to withhold from trusting anyone outside of their circles. In the future, it certainly seems realistic that social media, in its ever-growing state, will be included in such teachings. As Daniels said, these situations are upsetting to him -- and he hopes a raised awareness will help warn players of a surreal truth: Many more fake users are lurking."It can be a sad business, man," Daniels said. "It's sad you have to go through stuff like this."

Well, she was sleeping or unconscious for a good part of the time, right?. She could have said that she was falling asleep and asked him to stay on the line with her. Then she goes and makes herself a sandwich or ####s her boyfriend in the other room.

She was IN A COMA.

if the phone records were a spread sheet that is hilarious. Also i know this is awfully cynical of me but i think in the back of Teo's mind he thought one day this hoax could have been uncovered so he payed 50 bucks or so to send to the address so he can one day have a good sounding explanation with some evidence in that he wasnt aware of the hoax.I am truly not sure if he is teh worlds greatest liar or biggest goofball

People in the thread were reporting about the phone records. I meant to talk about the flowers he sent to the address for Lennay's funeral or whatever.

It seems like the more "evidence" Manti gives and the more he talks he is just opening up more questions for him to answer. On Cowherd today he basically said the NFL teams are going to dissect any and everything on this kid and the truth will come out. He doesnt think he started the hoax FWIW.
