I never subscribed to the theory that Te'o was gay, and this was an elaborate cover, but I think this opens up my mind a bit. At the very least...he fell in love talking to a guy pretending to be a girl, so he's likely got some kind of hidden issues even if he doesn't realize it.

theres ton of stories of other people getting "catfished" including our own Otis. Yet, making up a girlfriend to pretend your gay makes more sense? I was a little suspicious about the receipt we couldn't see, but I assumed someone fact checked the thing before running with a story. They had to, right? 1800flowers... "Did you send this?" "Yup." "K, thanks."Then when the story came out Schaap had the phone records, I thought, "Ok, but I don't know why it took so long."Surely Te'o didn't know Tuiasosopo was going to come out with the voice change stuff, but now we're to believe Te'o talked to a dude for thousands of hours? Keep in mind, he claims he talked to Tuiasosopo in his regular voice often as well.He has to be gay. He's still lying. It's the only reason I can see where someone would continue to lie while putting out a story which makes them look as bad as this does.If this story was legit, it could have been proven with redacted phone records and gift/flowers receipts with blacked out bank/CC information. He could've had that stuff ready to release with the initial Schaap interview. The story would not have survived the weekend. If you believe Te'o is telling the truth, his PR firm is botching this whole thing.

There are tons of stories about people getting "catfished," sure. That doesn't mean Te'o got catfished.And yes, being a football star and telling people that the guy you're talking to every night for hours is a girl makes more sense than "I fell in love with a boy pretending to be a girl and then I sat and listened to her coma breath for a few hours every night."

Local radio show had an interview today with the NYT reporter who penned the story of how ESPN got scooped even though they had this news for 10 days. He said what's even more baffling than their decision to sit on the story until they could get an interview with Te'o is the fact that they are actively pushing the "Te'o was the victim" narrative fairly uncritically even today. He said didn't want to speculate on why this is, but did point out that ESPN has been criticized in the past (including by Deadspin) for being close to sports organizations and agents, often helping each do their negotiating with calculated leaks on contract issues and such.

This whole think is nucking futs. Now we have audio of the fake girlfriend. Really? Really? I so wish ESPN would add another channel for this kind of stuff. ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPN Classic, and ESPN Legal News. I'm begging them. If I never hear the names Lance Armstrong, and Mantei Teo ever again it will be too soon.
