Kitna officially named starting QB

In the pre-training camp show on WKRK-FM Detroit, the Lions' flagship radio station, Rod Marinelli revealed what we pretty much already knew: Jon Kitna is the starting QB. Here is what Marinelli said on this topic.

"You know as we enter camp, we will have Jon Kitna. He'll enter camp as our starting quarterback. He's really had a tremendous offseason. I feel good about him. One of the reasons, too, is veteran leadership. I feel very strong about that. He brings great leadership to the position, and I want to eliminate distractions. He's just doing a great job, as is the other two quarterbacks."

Will be curious if they stick with him if he does poorly in TC/PS while McCown does well.

Kitna is too slow and has no arm. He's great at the leadership thing but a flake under pressure. He will do ok as a one year QB just like he did in Cinci until Palmer took over. But he is not going to lead any team to the playoffs.

nothing more than a band-aid for the position at the start of camp.McCown

will start more games in '06 than kitna, imo..neither is any good..

but at least McCown has a decent arm...

I think this bodes well for Kitna... it seems the job is likely his to lose now. While I don't think he is a above average NFL starting QB, he was decent in Cincy... and I feel the odds are good he'll be decent for Det (good enough to hang onto his job).

Kitna can solidify a mess of an offense. That's his job on a team that's been a mess for a while now. It's cool if the 3 WRs wanna catch it and run and get a ton of yards receiving in 06 or if Jones wakes up and leads the NFL in rushing but I don't think any of that is even on the radar in Detroit this year. It seems they just want structure and an everyday routine. From that, people will be held accountable and they'll try and break bad habits.

IMO McCown doesn't play til the team acts like a football team. He's too hot and cold, the amount of finger pointing would be ridiculous. When he's hot he's (yardage wise, shock) one of the better NFL QBs probably averaging more than 300 yards a game. Martz needs to figure out how to temper his frustration when he's not and work with him mentally too. If he's throwing for 300 yards a game, with those WRs, with Jones playing OK and a line working well together...that offense could be great.

All that can't happen til they're held accountable and forced to "grow up" and this year is the maturation year.
