Mario Williams requests move to left DE for BillsBy Gregg Rosenthal NFL.comAround The League editorPublished: May 21, 2012 at 07:08 a.m. Updated: May 21, 2012 at 07:38 a.m.Mario Williams has moved around a lot lately. In his final season in Houston, he transformed from a right defensive end to an outside linebacker. Then he left town for the big dollars and quiet life of Buffalo, N.Y.Brooks: Game changeThe Mario Williams signing is a major coup for Buffalo. Bucky Brooks says this takes the Bills' defense to the next level. More ... Now Williams is moving back to a new position for him in the NFL: left defensive end. Dan Pompeii of the National Football Post writes that Williams asked to move back to his old college position, where he says he's more comfortable. Williams played left end at North Carolina State. It doesn't sound like a big change, but Williams experienced a lot of success for the Texans on the right side. The Bills will put Mark Anderson and Shawne Merriman on the left side opposite Williams. It certainly can't hurt to have Williams work on his versatility. Moving him from side-to-side will make it tougher for offenses to keep track of him. The Bills shouldn't hesitate, however, to move him back to the right side if the change doesn't work. Why mess with the success Williams has had in the past?
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d8293b191/article/mario-williams-moving-to-left-defensive-end-for-buffalo-bills?module=HP11_headline_stackI don't see this as a big deal for Williams but something to consider when looking at the defense as a whole. Where Anderson will be lining up. Found this interesting.

So he will potentially be facing off against RTs more than LTs? Sounds good to me...Usually the premier pass-protection player is at the LT spot.

it also means he's more likely to face double teams with the TE generally on his side of the field, and that a right-handed QB will have an easier time seeing him than if he were rushing from the blindside.but this doesn't seem like news as I think they indicated all along that the left side was his preferred position. Mark Anderson is likely a better fit on the weak side anyway. There have been some indications that the OLB spots will be nearly interchangeable in this new Bills scheme, which suggests to me that they might be playing more of a right/left than weak/strong scheme.

Bills GM Buddy Nix says Mario Williams will play left defensive end, and that the Bills have no interest in using him at outside linebacker. Williams occasionally dropped back into coverage in the Texans' 3-4 defense last season, but he will stick at his natural position of end with the Bills. The Bills featured mostly a 3-4 in 2011, but plan to switch full-time to a 4-3 under new DC Dave Wannstedt. Nix says the Bills want Williams to play "with his hair swooped back and in a three-point stance and chasing the quarterback." That's why they're paying him $100 million. Mar 16 - 1:02 AM
