Maroney In the Cold (1 Viewer)

From ESPN:

News: Maroney, who scored seven touchdowns last season and has yet to find the end zone this year, feels like he will get his chance to score in the Patriots' coming games, the Boston Globe reports.

Spin: "I feel like my time is coming sooner than later," said Maroney, who missed three games earlier this season with a groin injury. In previous weeks, Sammy Morris and Heath Evans have gotten the bulk of the carries in close, but with Morris out for the season, Maroney could see more goal-line work. Taking a look at the Patriots' schedule, more often than not, the team will be dealing with the elements, with several cold weather/snowy situations likely on tap. That alone, could result in a slight shift in emphasis from the pass to the run down the stretch.

****

For several weeks now, I have been saying that the cold weather games will slightly alter the Patriots' offensive strategy, to the great benefit of Maroney owners, and to the detriment of Brady and ESPECIALLY Moss owners.

Maroney owners, your patience is about to be rewarded; it may even begin this weekend...

Moss owners, the bell begins to toll for thee...

No Wrong. Pats can and will throw on everyone all through the winter.

Now why would they go and be predictable like that? I think its near impossible to get inside Billy's head at this point. They could just toy with most of the teams they have left and save everything for the playoffs. Who knows what they are going to do. I do think that Maroney will get plenty of chances down the stretch - running the ball. Faulk is clearly the option in passing situations.

Where's champ when I need him? The 'messiah' is going for personal glory? How dare you speak such blasphemy!

brady is going for the record.moss will be the #1 WR this year.
As a Maroney owner who spent a 2nd rounder on him I tend to agree with this statement. If Maroney were going to have any value going forward you would have to think he would've had a decent game by now. Just one. This has not happened and with the mounting injuries I bet more FF teams are having to lean on Maroney. :bag: Talk is talk, he really needs to show something on the field this week IMO.

You haven't figured it out that the Pats are predictable every week? Brady to Moss. Brady to Stallworth. Brady to Welker. Brady to Watson. Brady to Faulk. They are a passing team. Those are his best weapons and best chances of breaking the season TD record by a QB. It's the Tom Brady show. Maroney is just a role player.

Outside of the Colts game, the Pats had really started to roll on teams. Averaging almost 50 for 3 weeks? That's tearing it up. I can see some 6 TD games in the coming weeks. And even if Brady throws 3 or 4 TDs, there's still a little TD love to be shared with guys like Maroney. I really think that for all of you Maroney owners who've been able to survive and are close to or will eventually make the playoffs, LM is going to give you more of what you been looking for down the home stretch. Just when you need it the most. jmho.

It's pretty crazy how that passing team has the seventh best rushing offense in the league.

It's amazing to me how good they can be with nothing but the threat of a run. I guess they do some screens with faulk that work as runs but they do just enough running to keep you honest and then unleash one of their 7 or 8 weapons in the passing game. Must be a good time to be a pats fan. "I'm sure of it, I hate 'em."They are like the pro version of Texas Tech (with the numbers and with how easy they make the passing game look) with a very good defense.

1. You can't consider the games where he wasn't completely healthy as proof of anything.

2. He's had 15 and 14 carries in the last two games, under optimum weather conditions. Isn't it logical to assume that cold weather will increase this to at least 20 carries? I'm not suggesting Bellichick completely alters his game plan; all I'm saying is that with all of the offensive plays NE has each game, at least 5 more of them will be running plays in cold weather. That is not a large sample, but it's signifcant for Maroney.

3. Like Addai, Maroney has the advantage that the safeties will not play up. this translates to plenty of room for a talented back, which he is. Therefore, at least 20 carries = at least 100 yards.

4. I know BB likes to get creative around the goal line with LBs, etc. But still, the loss of Morris means more goal line carries for Maroney. If the Pats average at least 30 pts per game the rest of the way (not unreasonable) it is also reasonable to assume that Maroney will get his opportunites at the GL, averaging at least one TD a game.

So these numbers seem reasonable to assume the rest of the way:

20 carries

100 yrds

1 TD

Maroney owners should be very happy with this.

the Steeler game in week 14 is troublesome, but other than that, his matchups are favorable as well..

I'm sure Maroney owners would like some touchdowns - but that has nothing to do with my point, which is that the Pats are actually pretty balanced in their play-calling and the perception of them as this exclusive passing team is kind of off-base. The Pats are fifth in rushing attempts per game with a little over 31. They are fifteenth in passing attempts per game with around 34.

You do realize that the coaching staff calls the plays, right? Or are you insinuating that Brady checks out of running plays to pad his stats?

I think that is a key right there.Seems like when they get close to the goal line, Brady (and Belicheck) will most likely look to get the TD via the air.
So far this year, they run more than they pass in both the red zone and inside the 5. They are clearly more effective at passing the ball, but the rushing attempts are there.

Here's a prediction:

(1) Moss doesn't play well in the snow and the wind-chill. (anyone have previous numbers on this?)

(2) the team relies more on Maroney

(3) Maroney gets hurt

(4) the Pats still go undefeated behind the Brady to Welker duet...

...and they lose in the playoffs to a hot team that can stop the underachieving Faulk without unusual effort while slowing/stopping the (highly talented but "weathered") one dimensional offense.

Brady puts the finishing touches on a very Manning-like year: claiming the TD record and the MVP... AND watching the superbowl from home (like Manning did following that record setting season). Oh if life could only be so ironic.

They are like the pro version of Texas Tech (with the numbers and with how easy they make the passing game look) with a very good defense.
They even have one of Tech's best recent alums (Welker)!A Longhorns/Cowboys fan friend of mine commented after the NWE-DAL game that it felt like the time Tech came in and "Welkered all over UT" a few years ago.-=kwantam

I must be the only guy on the planet in first place with Maroney as my 1st round pick.

It'd be nice to see him get a score before I die of old age.
