Maroney or Buckhalter to take Moreno's carries? (1 Viewer)

Two roto reports:

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi predicted on Total Access Friday that Laurence Maroney will be the Broncos' primary back with Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) sidelined. Analysis: Lombardi, who's close to people in the Denver organization, conceded that Correll Buckhalter "will be involved," but made it sound like Maroney has a very good chance to immediately take over as the lead back. The Colts' defense is not stout against the run, so Maroney is worth flex consideration because of the matchup. He is over his previous thigh injury.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Knowshon Moreno's strained hamstring will cost him "probably two weeks." Analysis: Keep in mind that Mort said this in reply to a Twitter question, so it's not an official "report." However, Mortensen has been on the story from the get-go, and was the first to report that the injury happened in Friday's practice. Laurence Maroney is tentatively expected to lead the Broncos in carries while Moreno is out, but we'll know more about the backfield distribution after Week 3. Correll Buckhalter and Andre Brown are also in the mix.

Not exactly a glowing recommendation, but has anyone heard anything similar? Seems like he might be a good play against that Colt's run defense.

Yeah, not long for a counter article to come out:

Sounds like a solid "wait and see" game, where the still clinging Maroney owners can see if he can produce with the new team.

I might be in the minority, but I could see Buckhalter having a solid game this week. It should be a high scoring affair, with Den down 2 CB's, Manning should be really productive through the air. Denver will probably be passing a fair bit this week, and that would be Buckhalter's territory I would think. I wouldn't be suprised at all to see something like:

Mcdaniels traded for Maroney when they already had 3 halfbacks on the active roster and Andre Brown on the PS. Buckhalter is a good backup. That is what he always has been and always will be. Maroney has the upside for a lot of reasons, but he has always had upside and has yet to deliver. Still, Maroney is the clear choice over Buck from here on out IMO

Newly acquired, Maroney picked up the Broncos' scheme quickly as a former pupil of coach Josh McDaniels in New England. McD knows Maroney's strengths, and he's a sleeper RB2 if you're desperate. The matchup is highly favorable. Buckhalter is averaging just 2.0 yards per carry and appears to be on his last legs.

It depends on who you ask. Personally, I think Buckhalter will get the start and the first crack. He is the one who knows the plays the best and also knows Orton the best. I do think Maroney will get some reps, but if Buckhalter does well, I think McDaniels will go with the hot hand. The same can be said for Maroney.

FWIW, I picked up Buck and let Maroney stay out of FA. I only need him for 1 week to fill in for Addai....

Thus, RBBC is likely, but Buck showed last week he can put it in the end zone. Buck knows the offense better, has a better feel for Orton's moves and is the first player to get a chance to do something with it. It won't be without interruption though... Maroney will see a few looks but not majority this week as Maroney is still recovering from his own injury issues. Besides, the OL in NEP was better than Den and Maroney did nothing there for years...

NEP traded Maroney since his contract was up soon and they got something out of him while they could. NEP knew they were selling a lemon and were more than happy to unload the dead weight....even with the RB issues of their own. Sammy Morris, Fred Taylor and Ben Jarvis-Green Ellis do not cause any Defensive Coordinators restless nights.

RBBC with Buck seeing the first 3 series, getting a rest for Maroney to have a touch, then Buck back in.

Projections..... sure I will go out on a limb

Indy will score at will.... Den Def will blink and be down 14, Orton will have to throw more than normal...

Buck: 18 carries for 70 yards, 3 rec for 14 yards and 1 TD

Maroney: 8 carries 34 yards, 1 rec for 11 yards

The weird thing about Maroney is he still looks like the same running back he was at UM (I am a UM grad that was there for his tenure.) He continually looks to bounce outside, use his speed and hates contact. At the college level, he definitely had the physical tools to run this way and be great. At the pro level, his bounciness and lack of physical play has turned him into a timid back that just doesn't go. Maybe that changes in Denver but I have my doubts. Buckhalter is a known quantity. The best back in town is still Moreno but I would be worried Moreno can't stay healthy or Maroney shows enough explosion to make this an RBBC or a tri-attack.

Well, considering that you are probably dropping an unproductive player off your team and picking up someone with good upside, how can you be disappointed? He is a lottery ticket that may actually payoff. He wouldn't be the first player in the NFL to wake up with a change of scenery. That McDaniel's traded for him shows that he sees something he likes in him. For what you are paying for him, he could pan out as WW gold. I have picked him up and hope to trade him later on if he catches fire.

I think Indy is gonna steamroll them in the first half. 24-7 is my guess. That is going to lead to a lot of catch up football by Denver. Maroney has caught 40 passes in his NFL career, and just started practicing with the team this week. Buckhalter is a fine receiving back. I wouldn't be surprised if captain checkdown hits him for 5-7 passes this week. Add in 12-15 rushes and I think 100 yards is very attainable with a TD chance at over 50%.

Meh...he has not flashed the speed or playmaking ability he showed early last year. The OL looks very bad in the running game (Denver currently sports a league-low 2.4 yards per carry). And the Neckbeard has been going downfield quite a bit so far this year. Maybe he reverts to his old ways and looks to check down this week. Either way, I'm not real high on Buck this week. It's possible he gets it going against a weak run defense and chips in with a decent receiving day, but I'd be surprised if he has a big day.

I'm slighting Buckhalter because of what my eyes tell me - he isn't the same guy he was last year. IMO he's on the wrong side of that fine line between "productive RB" and "over the hill". The 2.0 YPC and the trade for Maroney (before the Moreno injury) support this position.I agree with the BustedKnuckes above take.

I won't chime in either way on the Buckhalter/Maroney debate (although I do have Maroney starting opposite Buckhalter in my closest fantasy matchup of the week... just for ####s and giggles) but I don't buy the 2.0 YPC argument, either.

I think Seattle's got a legit run defense (Week 1 supports this).

I also think you can pass all day on the Jaguars. Hence the poor run performance there.

The Colts run D scares nobody.

One of these guys WILL go off this week. I won't pretend that I know which one but I'd like it to be Maroney.

Throw the numbers out the window and Buck isn't passing the eye test this year either. He hasn't shown the decisive and quick one cut and go. How much of that is due to a patchwork OL that has struggled run blocking? Who knows, but something doesn't look right imo. This time last year, he had a real burst and looked much better than he does now. As a Bronco homer, I hope you pro-Buck guys are right, but I'm just not seeing it.
