Martellus Bennett - playing musical chairs with the NFL (1 Viewer)

He was one of my offseason targets.(other was Palmer, who i think will be a top 10 QB and could have been had cheap)

3 leagues i paid: Brandon Spikes LB NE 1-1. A.Benn WR TB 1-1 E.Rodrigues/$400BB dollars in the 3rd($1k total BB$'s)

Looks like he is doing what i was hoping. Was on field alot in Dal, but ALWAYS used as the blocker as Witten is a great TE.

Hope he keeps it up and gets a bigger deal to stay in NY.

Damn. I tried trading for him earlier this week, and the owner wouldn't budge. I assume his price will only be going up with this game.

Is he getting targets outside of the redzone?

Funny what happens when you give a talented guy a chance to get downfield instead of using him for dump offs and behind the line of scrimmage screens.

Manning wasn't too happy with him on that last route of the half, but other than that he's solid.

And people claimed the Giants don't use the TE. They just needed one with the talent to warrant being a big part of the offense.

The bonus is the penalty the NFL put on the Cowboys and 'Skins for that cap stuff, gave the Giants the cap room to sign Bennett.

Eli over the last couple of seasons truly has become elite. He is playing at an awesome level. He finds the open guys, is creating mistmatches at the line etc.Bennett is the best TE that Eli has played with on a talent level. He will utilize him.

Bennett has established himself as a TE1. Congrats to all the owners who picked him off the waiver wire this week!
Props to those that drafted him. :football:
Props to those of us that picked him up on the wire in the offseason before he signed with anybody. ;)
Props to those who have held him for years and never game up on him.
Props to those that have a black unicorn tattoo.

Felling much better about this week in 2 leagues. :)

Benched Pettigrew to start him in 1, and replaced a dead Hernandez in another.

(also took a chance to play Andre Brown tonight as well since I need some luck)

3 cheers to the replacement Giants! Very nice start to the week.. :)

When Bennett was born I totally called this. I knew he'd end up bustin out as a premier TE on the giants. Called that ##### while he was still sucking his thumb in the hospital nursery. PROPS to me!

I do have to eat some crow. A few years ago I was critical of Cowboys fans that said Bennett was a talented player. I was wrong, he's really good. I just didn't see it at the time.

I was laughed at for drafting "The Black Unicorn" in the FFPC in the 13/14th

turn. I only hope his route running gets better, he does still miscue with Eli.

As a Giants fan, I see only another Jerry Jones bitter beer face in his Lux. box,

which is always a good thing.........

This is going to be HUGE for Bennett. Finally on a focussed team with a HC that will get the best from him and clearly the best TE on the team. A 6'6" giant that you can never double (no way teams double him and not Nicks/Cruz). Signs a one-year deal (e.g., will be playing ball out to earn a big payday next year).

This may be one of the best FA signings there has been!
This is the part I really like. I'm not a Giants fan but I always appreciate a team that takes something not-so-flashy and just does what is going to work well for their team. This is paying out in spades. Good work Giants organization. Jerry Reece is worth every penny you pay him.

As a Cowboy fan, I have to give credit where credit is due. The giants are obviously getting far more from him than 4 years in Dallas. As was mentioned above, you have to wonder if its coaching or just the proverbial change of scenerie. In Dallas, he was a constant to run wrong patterns and drop balls. Always a beast of a blocker, but a bonehead in receiving. It seems he's cut down on his drops. Not sure the wrong pattern stuff has gone away, but it appears far less now than before. Props to him for making something of himself.

Maybe you will know this.Last night, Bennett ran a route wrong and Eli immediately was over on the sideline discussing it with him.In Dallas, did the QB ever do that?

This. The difference is leadership IMO. From the QB to the coaching staff. Moving to NYG was the best thing that could have ever happened to Bennett.

I think people may be over complicating this. IMO the biggest difference is that there's no Jason Witten in New York. So the Giants viewed Bennett as a starter, treated him like a starter, involve him in the game plan like a starter and have him run the starter's routes.

All that other stuff seems unnecessary to me. Bennett's always been a good player, but he didn't get opportunities because he had a HOFer in front of him.

Reminds me alot of the Cedric Benson situation to be honest. A player with talent shows up with zero desire to perform and eventually gets cut. Once reality slaps them in the face and they get a second chance they actually get their crap together and start to perform. I can see how some might suggest it's a coaching/scheme issue, but IMO it's the player's fault.

As a Giants fan I have to wonder if they will be able to afford him next year.

He signed a one year deal and if he keeps putting up good numbers like he has the 1st 3 weeks the Giants may not be able to afford him

Leta worry about that next year. That would e a great problem to have bc it would mean that bennet is an elite TE by years end. For now us giants fans can just focus on our amazing qband his amazing weapons. It's dizzying how much receiving and rb talent there is on their roster. That Nicks and hixon could e out and Bennett and barden step up like that...incredible. That plus a little tightening things up with our defense Makes us a strong contender to repeat as sb champs. Seriously, who u gonna defend? You can try to double nicks or Cruz either way you lose. Then you got hixon or barden in the slot and Bennett vs a linebacker is a total mismatch. And of course eli throwing accurate lasers all over the field hitting all of these guys in stride. Scary.

I'm not real worried he'll demand a contract the Giants can't handle. Even if the cap doesn't go up the Giants may have cuts that free up cap space. Diehl might get cut and Osi is a FA. Will Hill might make Rolle or Phillips expendable. Bradshaw could get cut if Wilson is ready and Brown keeps going like he has. Bernard is likely gone and Blackburn too.

This.

Do you start him over certain WRs in flex leagues? Is his value higher than Malcom Floyd, Lance Moore, or Pierre Garcon?

lol.... this guy has been a whole lot of nothing since entering the league.Sure he was buried behind Witten, but showed very little when given the opportunity.Easily the most hyped and most under achieving TE of his generation.

I agree but I find this turnaround even more surprising. Benson didn't balloon up right before his first season with the Bengals and it wasn't until his second year there that he played any better than he did in Chicago. I'd compare it more to Brandon Lloyd who out of the blue suddenly 'got it'.

back in the early days of this post, there was quite a bit of discussion between those of us that thought this was a good thing and those who said he was worthless. It came out that most people disregarding Bennett were Cowboys fans and the discussion turned towards "maybe you are biased and just don't WANT to see the opportunity". To their credit, a lot of the Cowboys fans who said these things have come back to post that they were biased. Some haven't, of course. But, overall, I think what happened was what was said that 1st day. The opportunity on a team that is known for leadership has gotten this guy on track and with such formidable weapons around him, he is thriving. It really was a great FA move by the Giants. Jerry Reece is an impressive GM (and, no, I'm not a Giants fan...just giving credit where it is due).

Time to offer that trade now....price just went down.
I feel like the price won't go that far down. Unless he is the TE2 for someone who wants to cut bait now while he still has some value, someone who has him as TE1 probably won't trade him now. Not to mention, I'm still not sold on him being more than a middle of the pack TE1. He'll be solid but I don't think he'll get to double digit TDs and he'll probably average 50-60 yards the rest of the way. Game with no Nicks and he only gets 3 targets (and 1 catch called back)? And they threw it 42 times. He'll start being taken out of the game especially at the goal line where the Giants still aren't a credible run threat. So you probably aren't going to get the #7 TE for cheap and that'll probably be about where he finishes up. Consistently getting 40-60 yards with the occasional TD like everyone else in that tier like Celek, Cook, Pettigrew, or Gresham who can be had at a value for not scoring in 3 straight games.
