Is Marvin comparable with D in Cincy? If you were an NFL owner, would you think that he's not living up to expectations then? How much of Carson's successs, which everyone predicted when he was drafted, is creditted to Marvin?

The Bengals seem to have had 10 different LBers start, going back to preseason, if not more. A troublemaker(lack of better term) suspension and a likely career ending injury took two out. From there it's been more injuries, one right after another. Is that thought of as "well it's not his fault they got hurt" and blown off or is he still expected to have a solid D in Cincy?

Finally, in your opinion, is Marvin at risk to lose his job after this season?

yes he most definitely is! with that talent, going 8-8 four times in 5 years, is unacceptable. He once again seems poised to have that team finish around 8-8, or 7-9..The defense hasn't gotten any better since he took over, in fact,its gotten worse..My guess is that if this continues, Lewis will be coaching elsewhere in '08.

In some cities he would, but not in Cincy. Mike Brown is loyal to a fault at times, and he's selling out at PBS to boot. As a Bengal fan, I'm starting to get critical of Marvin too. The old "In Marvin We Trust" saying is starting to lose it's luster.

I mostly agree with Rushmore but with a 'but'. I remember the David Shula era (talk about being overly loyal! 5 years of that mess!) so certainly Brown will stick with him. I think the mold is closer to what the Steelers and Titans have done in term of the coach (look at the late 90s for Cowher's record where it started getting a little shaky) and I think it would take one truly horrible season followed by a lack of progress and a lost locker room being the ingredients necessary for him to go. Bresnahan, however may me in a much more tenuous position I would think.

My main beefs with Marvin have been more the game management type stuff (throwing the challenge flag when there is zero chance of getting the play overturned, a general disregard for the value of timeouts). The risk/reward defense has not gotten enough reward this year (they miss tackles because they try to generate turnovers. This can be great (see Baltimore game) or a total disaster (see Cleveland game).

The injuries at LB have been a killer, no doubt and the loss of Pollack and Thurman have proven to set that position back 3 or 4 years. But we weren't tackling before that so I don't think that's the whole problem, not by a long shot.

The amazing this is that this team really can go a long way to rectifying this season. If they beat the Steelers this week (and given that the mighty Broncos and Cardinals have done so certainly makes me believe that they can), all of a sudden they are only 1 game out of first with a pretty good divisional tiebreaker situation and a pretty soft schedule to end the year. I can't think of a game 7 in a regular season where the difference between the consequences of victory and defeat were so stark.

FWIW I think Marvin has made some bad decisions on drafting players with questionable character, and has had some pure bad luck with injuries that have kept him from building a top tier defense. I posted a blurb the other day about how many of their draft picks are either injured or suspended. (Suprisingly alot more injuries than suspensions) It basically boiled down to only having 4 players drafted in the first 5 rounds over the last 4 years that are still healthy & playing. Thats 4 out of 20. IMO if Pollack and Thurman were still playing, this defense could be top 5.

You clearly did not see Thurman's rookie year before he caught idiotitis-QG
