Mass shooting on my block. Thousand Oaks. At least 12 dead. This world is f’d Up (1 Viewer)

Just 5 mass shootings short of one every day for 2018.

Now saying someone else has died?  Making it 13, but not clear in these counts if shooter gets in the count or not.
I watched the PC with Sheriff Dean last night.  He did not include the shooter in his count, which put the total at 12.  13 would be including the killer.

Dean did a great job handling it, especially considering he and the deceased Sergeant Helus were good friends.  While explaining that he and Seargent Helus would work out together and that Helus was looking forward to retirement in the next year (29 years 4 months of service), Dean began to break down.  Helus left a wife and son, he said.  God that was sad.  Dean started cracking a second time when a reporter asked about Helus and protocol.  Helus did exactly what they had been trained to do -- Dean telling the reporter they started training for things like this all the way back to Columbine -- and being first on the scene, went in immediately after the shooter.

The first two officers were there in only 3 minutes and Helus didn't hesitate.  A true hero who very likely saved many lives.

One article had a witness say he believed the killer shot himself right after those two officers arrived.  If they take 5 minutes to get there or hesitate even slightly, perhaps the casualty count is doubled or worse.  It sounded similar to the Pittsburgh situation.

We criticize the police so often these days but it's important they get the recognition for the countless lives they save each day.

When you think of cities you would want to raise your family in, Thousand Oaks would be at or near the top of the list.  Crazy there's no place immune to these things anymore.

There's not much else to say for these events than it's awful that things like this happen, I feel terrible for those killed and their families, and I wish it would stop.

Thousand Oaks is the 307th mass shooting in the U.S. this year. If that does not absolutely horrify you, then you need to take some time to yourself and think about why.

I work a few minutes away from there, and work with several people from the area, but luckily nobody I know was directly affected.

it's becoming almost routine to expect one of these stories every day, and that should frighten all of us. I'm not sure what the answer is, but we definitely need to start seeking SOME answers.

and RIP Sgt Ron Helus. your presence probably saved many lives, and you are a true hero.

I really wish we could take all these tragedies and make something good out of it, coming together to implement sweeping changes to how people can gain access to WMD and a new renewed focus on mental health care for all our citizens. ?

one of the surviving victims, is the son, of a dude i went to high school with.  he posted pics, on facebook, of his kid being loaded into the ambulance.  and an after shot of him, with the through and through  bandages on his chest/back  unf'ing real

Stopped off and donated money to the fundraiser for Cody Coffman's family tonight at Topper's Pizza in Camarillo.  HUGE support.  Place was absolutely packed with a line of 30 out the door.  Community is rallying. Same for efforts to help the fire victims. Amazing to see the donation centers for clothes/food, etc set up that are being overwhelmed with people giving.  At Fire Stations too.

Curious to see the link to this and what qualifies as “Mass shooting” for this statistic? Are they considering a mass shooting a case simply where two or more people were shot (ie murder/suicide, or a shooting attempt where a stray bullet might have hit a passersby as well)? Do one or more fatalities have to be involved to qualify?

Any mass shootings are unacceptable.. but that number feels like maybe loose criteria were used to inflate it.

Four or more people killed or injured.
Very interesting and sad if true. Do you have a link to the data? I’d like to read more about it. Thanks GB

edit: found it at gunviolencearchive.org.

Looks like there was an incident yesterday here in Memphis I never even heard about.. in the “hood”. 6 shot 2 dead over a dice game.

If we look at larger shootings (10 or more injured), perhaps a better definition of a “Mass Shooting”, there have been 4 this year. That number is lower than I expected given the high number of 4+ hit (309).

I would've gone 3+. anything more than 2 people shooting at each other implies "mass shooting" to me. 10 or more seems like a massacre. yes, semantics and all...

yes semantics.

Whn I hear mass shooting - I always equate to one/two dudes going nuts and picking off innocent people.   it never really equated to gang fights etc but it probably should
