Master List of "CAMP HYPE" (1 Viewer)

Unlucky

Phenom
Someone suggested in another thread that we track all of the camp hype stuff to see just how it turns out. Perhaps we can really learn something.

However, to keep this thread from becoming a million pages, here are the rules that I ask you to follow:

1. Post the quotable material that "hypes" the player

2. Post a link to the source, or at least the name of the source

3. BOLD the player name so it's easy to reference, and avoid nicknames

4. DO NOT post your comments - NO DEBATING PLAYERS IN THIS THREAD!

5. DO NOT post your comments in regard to other posts

I want this to strictly be a list of camp hype reports. We will study the list after the season, and try to learn from it so that we can better interperet the hype next pre-season.

Charles Rogers Fearless --

Sun Jul 31, 2005 --from FFMastermind.com

The Detroit News reports the Lions had their first training-camp practice in full pads Saturday, and WR Charles Rogers showed no tendency to shy away from contact. On one play, he lined up to his right and slid to catch a pass from Joey Harrington. The ball was thrown low to beat the coverage, and Rogers did not hesitate to go for it. He was scrambling to his feet even before he heard teammates and coaches yell, "Get up!" "I hadn't been touched," Rogers said. "I wasn't down yet. I have to get those six points." When he got back to the huddle, Rogers tapped hands with QB Joey Harrington. It was a little sign among players -- a welcome back. Rogers suffered a broken right collarbone on the third play of the Lions' opening-game victory last season in Chicago. He lined up right and dived for a pass over the middle. His collarbone snapped as he landed on the turf. In 2003, Rogers' rookie season ended during practice after the fifth game. He insists he won't worry about the possibility of another injury. He was cleared for full contact when camp opened and is wearing regular shoulder pads, without extra protection. "I'm not going to come out here and be too padded up where I can't use my ability and be able to stretch out and make the big plays. I come out here fearless," he said.

Reggie Williams keeps making big plays. After a standout effort in the offseason minicamps, last year's No. 1 pick continues to impress after dropping eight pounds and getting noticeably quicker. Williams wowed the crowd Saturday night with a diving, sliding grab of a bomb from Byron Leftwich in skeleton passing drills.
and from the Florida Times Union:
The Florida Times-Union reports Jags WR Reggie Williams, last year's No.1 pick, has dropped about eight pounds since the end of last season and appears noticeably quicker. Williams said he feels quicker, too, crediting the weight loss (down to a listed 214 pounds) for much of his increase in speed. "I can feel it especially coming in and out of my breaks,'' Williams said Saturday. "Mostly [coming] off the line, though.'' Williams is trying to improve on a rookie season in which he caught just 27 passes and one touchdown despite starting all 16 games.

the source isn't ffmastermind but detroit news
you're just contributing to the problem of commentary here--you're not supposed to post anything in the thread but actual camp reports.

HoustonTexans.com reported that WR Andre Johnson will be in motion a lot presnap this season. By doing this, opponents will have a harder time lining up against him. "Here's a guy who got 975 yards his first year, was an All-Pro his second year and now, with the ability to move him around, will make it more difficult for the defense to zero in on him," offensive boss Chris Palmer said. "The sky is the limit for this guy. He's a very talented individual and we expect him to have a big year."

If I can make one comment since I was the one who suggested this, we need a nice definition of hype.A news article talking about how xyz showed up to training camp in shape is one thing.A news article saying how xyz is in "the best shape of his career" is the stuff I'm talking about. There seems to be specific buzz phrases that get tossed around every year."best shape of his career""made several one handed catches and impressed the crowd"""did that Ryu dragon uppercut punch from Street Fighter over the goal post and disappeared into the sky for his TD dance"Like that post about how Reggie Williams keeps making great play after great play is what I'm talking about. The news article about how the Texans are changing their offense to include AJ in motion is more a statement of fact than opinion/quasi-fact/hype (although there was some normal coachspeak quotes after that about how he's a great player and we expect great things blah blah). Really its not very often you hear a coach say that the player is awful, doesnt belong in the NFL and I wouldn't take the time to spit in his mouth if he were dying of thirst. Although that'd be a lot more honest and funny. In fact, we could have a seperate study just for coach/GM/owner commentary.

THE GIANT GIANT

Last season, the Giants were woeful on third down, converting only 13 of 27 third-and-1s (48 percent), the second-worst percentage in the league.

This is where the Giants' fourth-round pick, running back Brandon Jacobs, comes in. At 6-foot-4 and 267 pounds, Jacobs probably is the biggest running back in the league and the ultimate short-yardage specialist.

And he has the pedigree. Before transferring to play at Southern Illinois, Jacobs backed up Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams at Auburn. With that backfield, how did Auburn ever lose a game? The Giants want to make sure Jacobs can adjust to his role as a pass protector. And if he can, he'll be on the field for most every short-yardage situation facing the team.

OVERALL:

- If this practice was any indication, the passing attack this year is vastly improved. I’d say about 80% of all the passes were complete. Of the 20% that were incomplete, maybe 10% were outright dropped (McCants had about 3 of them) , 5% were overthrown (Ramsey and Brunell) and the last 5% were defenced.

- On virtually every pass play the receivers earned great separation from their defenders and would easily catch the ball before defenders could converge. Even our best cornerback (Springs), who provided the best coverage… had difficulty keeping with a few feet of the receivers. Springs didn’t defend any passes. Moss, Patten and Jacobs were indefensible.

Travis Taylor

Link: http://www.vikings.com/news_detail_OBJECTN...eature8504.html

This might be the year when it all comes together for Vikings receiver Travis Taylor. The former first round (10th overall) selection by Baltimore was picked up this off-season by the Vikings to help fill the void left by Randy Moss when he was traded to Oakland. In Minnesota, Taylor finds something he has not had yet in his professional career - a top-notch quarterback and a corps of receivers to help carry the load. In Taylor, the Vikings hope to find a season where he is not nagged by injuries and can produce what he is truly capable of producing.

...

"Travis gives us a player with a tremendous amount of potential and the ability to be a game-breaker," Coach Mike Tice commented. "He's got very good hands. Above average hands. He's strong and very hard to press at the line of scrimmage. He has a great feel for uncovering to the quarterback. He had a beautiful out route yesterday where he uncovered down the stem to the quarterback," Tice commented after practice on Wednesday.

...

Maybe it's all finally coming together for Taylor. A Pro Bowl quarterback, a speedy and talented receiving corps, and hopefully an injury-free season could mean great things. Maybe 2005 will be the season it all comes together for Taylor and the Minnesota Vikings too.
This one isn't too bad with the blatent overhype.

While Braylon sits, Bryant shines

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=..._id=46370&rfi=6

BEREA -- Sure, they're facing a defense that doesn't have a very good pass rush, and well, yeah, starting cornerback Daylon McCutcheon has been out all training camp with headaches. And it's true the defense is groping while trying to learn the 3-4 philosophy of Romeo Crennel.

But still, the highlight of camp so far is the way Browns quarterback Trent Dilfer and Antonio Bryant are clicking. It seems like every time Dilfer throws the ball in Bryant's direction, Bryant catches it.

Sometimes he's wide open, but more often than not Bryant is catching the ball just beyond the reach of a defender, or maybe he's leaping and stretching out his body parallel to the ground to come up with the ball, as he did during practice Tuesday.

Bryant did drop a pass in the back of the end zone yesterday, but he bounced back to catch every pass thrown his way the rest of the day.

Meanwhile, top draft choice Braylon Edwards sits while his agent and the Browns haggle over how many millions of dollars Edwards should be paid before catching his first NFL pass.

What if someone more gifted than Rice or Payton -- the best player in the NFL today -- attempts to exceed their level of determination? And what if, instead of hills and beaches, he relies on cutting-edge training techniques, computer measurements and a crew of specialists dedicated to honing virtually every aspect of his body? How extraordinary could he become? How high could he raise his performance?

"Twenty-two hundred."

Twenty-two hundred yards -- it is his goal this season, a goal that would obliterate Eric Dickerson's NFL rushing record of 2,105. And now that Emmitt Smith has retired, carrying with him the all-time career rushing yardage mark (18,355), why not aim to surpass that number, too? Certainly, no other contemporary has the combination of talent, potential career longevity and grit to better stalk Smith, Tomlinson's boyhood idol. At 26, after four seasons, he already has accumulated 5,899 rushing yards, almost one-third of the way to Smith's benchmark figure.

"He's a staggering talent," says Randy Mueller, the Dolphins' new general manager. "He has no weaknesses. And he has that extra gear to go 60 yards every time. But he's more than a runner. He is a great receiver, he's willing to go inside for extra yards, he'll pick up blitzes. He is the most complete back in the business. And he's not even close to his prime.

I'm afraid to violate any of the rules to post. Seriously though Unlucky, the blogger guys are picking up most everything. A lot should be able to be gleaned from the News tab from the main page. We're trying to stay on top of it. I really like this idea but it might get a little sloppy without the ability to organize or search by team or position etc. which you are able to do from the News page. Good luck with this.

The goal isn't to keep track of the news. It's to pull the HYPE articles and see how it stands up at the end of the year. Hopefully, we can learn how much is just people talking, and how much really shows that a guy is looking good and will have a great year. I read the Blogger and look for the biggest HYPE articles.

That was kind of my point though. You could use that as a primary source to sift out the hype articles and drag them into this thread. I'm just saying it's a great place to go to pull from multiple news sources relatively easily instead of random bits that are pulled from here and there. I think this is a cool idea. I hope it works well and will contribute at least from the hype articles that I locate which should be quite a few this time of year. A point I was trying to get at is that it might be valuable if we could somehow segment the thread into by team and/or by position posts. Not sure how to do this most efficiently.Maybe something like Drugrunner's dynasty league threads where you have an individual link for either each team (which might be too many) or each position (maybe more practical). Just an idea.

Bryant Johnson

"He's going to surprise a lot of people. Everybody is going to be looking for those other two guys, and I think BJ is going to have a tremendous year. It's tough to cover a guy who has the stride and speed that he does. He gets on you very fast." - QB Kurt Warner on WR Bryant Johnson
No source. Posted by azcards33, who is reliable. I don't feel like finding the source, but it's a direct quote from Warner.

Does Tatum Bell officially belong here? :)
To be fair, there was a notable lack of hype about Bell during camp this year (although there was a lot back in the spring). It was very different from the Portis/Griffin lovefests before. At the time, this seemed like a troubling sign. Now we know just how troubling.

A lot of hype and not a lot of results. The Redskin passing attack was dead on, Jacobs is the goaline back but little production, Don King could not overhype LT.I think this was a good idea do it again starting in the spring so we have more to look at if possible. My take on it is don't believe the hype.

I hope we can do another "hype" thread this year to see how it works out. I'd prefer we get more names than last time, but the early showing shows that pre-season hype = nothing more than hype.

Reggie Williams? LOL

Shouldn't we maybe be a little more thorough in evaluating the results than just looking at one player? Yes, Reggie Williams hype was a bust. But if you believed the Antonio Bryant hype, you could have gotten one of the better fantasy WR3 (26th-28th WR in my leagues) at an ADP of WR44 or so. Patten and Jacobs were busts, but if you believed the Moss hype (and his would have been the hype more likely to believe I'd imagine) you'd have gotten a top 4 WR at a WR36 ADP.

There was no real Moss or Bryant hype leading into the season. If you recall, there was a thread about Reggie Williams here what seemed like every other day with a bunch of news blurbs posted and how he was going to be the second coming of Isaac Bruce.Moss and Bryant had those articles, but there wasn't anything like the hype machine that was building up around Reggie Williams. The comments that created this thread were mine, which were a reaction to all the hype Reggie was getting at the time.

This thread never really reached it's potential, since we only had a few players, and one article each. I just wanted to see what (mostly have done nothing lately) guys were getting tons of ink every day, and Reggie was one of them.

So if we do this again, I'd like it to be more than just one news article about a guy adn that's it. If a guy is getting article after article, day after day, that should be noted.
