Mathews On Short Leash (1 Viewer)

I saw Aikman tweeting last night, about how Norv is the best play caller in football and its not close.

Think he may be a bit biased?

When Turner was hired I read a piece where somebody argued that he was the worst head coach in the history of the league. They had a lot of numbers to back it up. He has wrecked each team he has coached.

Good offensive coordinator. Generally good for RBs for any team he is associated with. His record as a HC has been ungood. It amuses me to this day how hard the SD homers defended firing 14-2 Schottenheimer for this guy and did so for years. It's only been in the last 2 years when they've turned on Norv and AJ.

6.67 ypc, 9.83 ypc.. and watching from the sidelines on a critical drive..
I got what I needed from him in all my leagues so I wasn't freaking out, but I did find it bizarre that their most explosive/effective player all day was on the bench when they needed him most. I also found the play calling from 1st and goal/2nd and goal from the 2 yard line to be rather stupid. When Mathews is gashing New Orleans for 10 ypc on that drive, why not give him the ball from the 2 yard line at least once??
Actually...that was the one spot where they SHOULD have been running Battle. (And didn't...lol)

Saw twitter feed where Rivers checked out of the run on that 2nd and 2. Norv confirmed with a writer. Rivers arm strength is dropping and he should be rooting for this kid too. Not working against his and the team's success.

I've noticed that too, he's definitely not the same QB anymore. There's a reason why Gates/Meachem are struggling, Rivers isn't what he used to be. He's still considered to be a QB in his prime so it is kind of odd.

As a Mathews owner, I can only pray that the light has finally come on for Norv:

Coach Norv Turner indicated that Ryan Mathews' weekly workloads will increase back to the full-time variety following Sunday's loss to New Orleans, saying "I expect him to be one of the league's leading rushers." "Ryan was outstanding," Turner said following Mathews' 139-total yard, one-score effort, in which he was ultimately underutilized. "Everything I’ve said about him in the offseason, every time he’s had adversity, he’s come back stronger. People want to count him out or say, ‘Hey, you can’t count on this guy,’ but he’s come back stronger." In order to finish among the NFL's lead rushers, Mathews has some ground to make up and Turner knows it. It's still very much attainable against one of the league's most cakewalk schedules to close out the year. The buy-low window on Mathews has officially closed.

Maybe the Chargers were merely being careful with Mathews

People want to count him out or say, ‘Hey, you can’t count on this guy,’
What people? So, is Norv really this delusional or is this a reference to conversations he's had with his GM?

Hmm... let's see. Who has not counted on Mathews recently?

Exactly what I was thinking. Unless Norv is reading FBG message boards the most negative things about Mathews have been put out by him and his megalomaniac of a GM.Give the boy the damn ball. If he gets hurt or fumbles too much again then its on him. But all of the BS of the last few weeks has been entirely created by Norv and AJ Smith.

Exactly what everyone was thinking. What a stupid statement by a stupid man.
As a Skins fan I suffered through 7 years of Norv. Troy Aikman can defend him all he wants and he is one of the best playcallers in football. But as a leader he is SEVERELY lacking and this situation is just the latest example of that.

Norv would take Legatron out on kicks to rest his leg. Go for it on 4th downs instead.

This thread just took a U-turn. Let's get back on track.

Hey, how 'bout that AJ Smith? He's a jackass, isn't he? Looking forward to Mathews sticking it to him tonight...and then sticking it to AJ's wife! Hey-O! :hifive:

15 carries and a catch in the first half, I think it's safe to say that he's back to being the workhorse RB. Ronnie Brown will probably still be in on third downs though.

Jackie Battle must be resting up for the playoffs.

I'm a bit concerned that he's not an every down back. I know he produced with Tolbert last year with the same scenario, but if he had all those 3rd down receptions and yards he would be a very strong RB1. At least he's getting the touches now so I'm at least content with that.

Also it's a bit concerning that he can't beat out Ronnie Brown in the 3rd down role. Ronnie seems to be doing very well with this role, but we've seen what Matthews can do receiving out of the backfield. So what gives there?

RM is out of the game for the last 5 minutes of every Chargers game?? Out on 3rd downs, out for random series, out because he needs a breather...

RYAN MATHEWS IS A BUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those who don't think so are in denial. He's a BUST, period, end of story.

Not necessarily. He just has an idiot head coach

Terrible, awful playcalling.

I must have seen at least 10 runs on 1st and 10. Every single one was a simple up the gut run. The defense figured it out after the 1st quarter yet Norv continually, every single 1st down, lines up the same play. Mathews never had any luck with these because everyone in the entire stadium saw it coming.

Saw a few screen plays sniffed out before they fully developed it. A few outlet dump offs sniffed out before Mathews was about to get up to speed also.

Overall it was 70% Norv and 30% defense working together to make sure Mathews never had much room all night.

It would be nice to get him in space occasionally.

You do know that Ronnie Brown is the 2 minute drill and no-huddle designated RB, right? He has been since training camp. It's not Mathews, it's Norv.

Even with that he's averaging 100 Total YPG going back to last season. That's not a bust.

He outscored Jamaal Charles, Marshawn Lynch, Frank Gore, and Trent Richardson this week. Lesean Mccoy scored a whole 1.5 points more. And he was probably drafted a round or two ahead of Matthews. The guy will get more involved as the Chargers realize that you can't put the ball in Rivers hand that much. I'd gladly take him off your hand for you though.

So glad I don't own him this year. His owners are always hopeful because the guy has talent but they also cringe every time he gets tackled. I've been there, I know how it feels. Sorry.

It's ridiculous that the best offensive player isn't in the game at key moments!

Reminds of how Todd Haley used to play Thomas Jones over Jamaal Charles at key points in the game. Yes it's 100 yards to the green but let's break out the putter.

perspective i suppose. fantasy-wise, it's all about where you drafted him.as far as real life, as prefaced earlier, norv holds him back. with play-calling and with asinine substitutions.-biz-

In fantasy terms, he has been a bust so far this year, especially if you are in leagues that drafted or auctioned before the preseason started.
