Just wondering how much longer the Twins will keep trotting out that fat pig Ponson and his 6.something era?? And will Garza be the one to get the call to help? Just wondering, any info is appreciated.
Not a homer but with both Perkins and Slowey also in the pecking order it could be later than you think.4x champ said:Just wondering how much longer the Twins will keep trotting out that fat pig Ponson and his 6.something era?? At this point Garza might even be the 4th in line. If a starter were needed today I think the order is:BakerPerkinsSloweyGarzaI don't expect to see Garza fulltime until 2008.Not a homer but with both Perkins and Slowey also in the pecking order it could be later than you think.4x champ said:Just wondering how much longer the Twins will keep trotting out that fat pig Ponson and his 6.something era?? And it's not that they are 'down' on Garza. He's clearly one of the top young guys in the organization. It's just that they have to figure out Baker and Perkins is already on the team. Slowey has gone ahead of Garza so it's more about the depth at this point. When Liriano comes back next year no one in baseball will have as much young pitching major league ready. At this point Garza might even be the 4th in line. Didn't realize there were two other guys in the mix. Thanks for the heads up fellas.
With Garza's ST performance, I heard he was a little pissed that he was sent down. Is this true, or was it just normal disappointment? Do they have any kind of obligation to bring him up sooner because of this, or is it a get in line, wait your turn deal happening? And it's not that they are 'down' on Garza. Garza has struggled with his command so far (even though his numbers are solid) but what's really happening is the dominant performance of Kevin Slowey and the re-emergence of Scott Baker. I wouldn't be surprised if the Twins are trying to convince Garza that he's not exactly Clemens just yet. I do recall hearing what you heard but I don't think it's anything other than the normal high profile guy wanting to stay up with the MLB team. I have read that Garza is a pretty cocky dude and thinks he can throw a fastball by anyone. The Twins actually got to the point where they were limiting the number of fastballs being thrown to force him to work on his breaking pitches, which are good but needed work.I still think the real story here now is Kevin Slowey shooting past Garza. With Garza's ST performance, I heard he was a little pissed that he was sent down. The Twins decided he needed to work on his breaking pitches, find a changeup and stop pitching high in the strike zone with his fastball. I think it's yet to be determined if he's made significant improvement in those areas or not but it finally got to the point that the Twins couldn't wait anymore. I'll admit to being surprised he came up as everything from the team had indicated that he was down for a reason with work to do. First start was very nice, I'm hoping he can build on it. But make no mistake, he's legit. His fastball and slider are well above major league average. Well above. If he can do the work and make the progress the Twins expect of him then he's flat out an all star soon. We'll see. As dump deals go you could do a helluva lot worse than a $1 Garza.Well, I just dumped a $22 John Smoltz for a $1 (locked up for 3 years at that price) Matt Garza. What's the 2nd half thoughts on this guy? Pickles? Funkley?
One thing mentioned here in Minnesota about Garza last year is that his fastball is too straight. I don't know for a fact if this is true, nor do I know if he has corrected it, if it's even possible to correct. Maybe that's why they want him to work on his breaking pitches more and find a changeup? Maybe that fastball wouldn't look as inviting. The Twins decided he needed to work on his breaking pitches, find a changeup and stop pitching high in the strike zone with his fastball. The reason they wanted him to develop his other pitches more was because he would tend to try and over-power everyone with his fastball. He has been very successful with it in the minors, but got knocked around a bit last year when he was called up. I didn't catch his start last weekend but I read that the Rick Anderson (pitching coach) was satisfied with his pitch selection and threw a good amount of breaking pitches.I agree with Funkley, guy is legit and I'd like to see him break out this second half...although I would expect that to come next year.JohnnyU said:One thing mentioned here in Minnesota about Garza last year is that his fastball is too straight. Hopefully he has increased confidence in those offspeed pitches after spending some time in the minors.JohnnyU said:One thing mentioned here in Minnesota about Garza last year is that his fastball is too straight. Thanks Funk - I thought it was decent value for Smoltz, especially with Smoltz's shoulder concerns coming off of back-to-back 230 IP seasons.Funkley said:The Twins decided he needed to work on his breaking pitches, find a changeup and stop pitching high in the strike zone with his fastball.
