Matt Jones and Jack del Rio (1 Viewer)

Off the field, Jags coach Jack Del Rio and receiver Matt Jones, a former No. 1 pick, seem to be fed up with each other. Del Rio has gotten into Jones' face and basically called him a ####. Jones may not play because of a heel injury and his agent has been looking around to see if any teams might be interested in him.

Now that Byron Leftwich is gone, the fans in Jacksonville need a new target for their frustration. I present Matt Jones. Matt certainly has not played to the level of expectation and he does seem to be soft, which is a terrible thing for an NFL player. But this is just the lastest Jacksonville witch hunt. Matt does need to play better, but there are at least 10 guys that have played as poorly or worse for the Jags than Matt this season that no one is talking about. I guess it's the blessing and the curse of being a first round pick.

Jones does not want to play football anymore.

I will never understand using a first rd pick on a project.

Thought the WR's needed to go before Leftwich.

All that needs to be said is Dennis Northcutt is their best WR. That's not to hate on Dennis, but he should be a slot WR.

I for one think someone needs to call Del Rio out. What is a coach doing talking about this stuff publicly? If he has a problem with how Jones' plays, he should talk to him privately and that is as far as it goes. If he wants to demote him, demote him. This is bad policy because it tells the team that team business can be brought out to the public whenever Del Rio wants. Also, he ruins whatever trade value Jones might have had--the same situation as with Leftwich. Del Rio is the guy who needs to go IMO--it is his job to make his high draft picks successful and he has had plenty of time.

Has Jones said anything about not wanting to play football anymore or asking for a position change back to QB? I keep reading that he's another Eric Crouch, but I'm not reading anything from him saying that. Did he lobby for a shot at the #2 or #3 QB job after Tim Couch and Byron Leftwich were cut?

Del Rio looks like a coach who's just losing control (and losing his job). He makes one guy his definite starting QB, then suddenly yanks the guy as starter and cuts him. He calls out one of his starting WR's. His team's offense has a good run game which is now shut down because they have a lousy passing game. He seems clueless, feeling like his job is threatened, panicky, and doing stupid knee-jerk stuff now.

Here is what he said:"I'm not a guy that's jumping up and down all the time," said Jones, who embraces his laid-back personality. "If you're asking me to be a guy that's going to be hollering around and jumping up and down and stuff, I don't think that's ever really going to be me. I'm a team player. I want us to win. I know when you win everything's better. I do what I can, whatever role that is."

That doesn't sound like a guy who doesn't want to play or who has a bad attitude. Not everyone is rah rah, jump up and down. A reserved personality doesn't mean you don't want to play. Del Rio is an idiot--there is no debate about that. When does he take responsibility for the team's lack of success?

He's also fired a lot of coaches(three OCs in 5 years plus many others) and had a running fued with Shack Harris, the GM. It's tough to gauge Del Rio as a coach because the Jags were a terrible football team when he took over and they have certainly improved a great deal. But his handling of the QBs over the last 3 years leaves a lot to be desired to say the least and for 3-4 years now the passing game has been the glaring weakness and nothing he has done has worked. Winning cures everything in the NFL and winning may be the only thing that can save Del Rio at this point. I don't even want to imagine what the fans will do if the Jags fade and Leftwich earns the starting job in Atlanta and plays well. Jacksonville could well lose that team because of mismanagement.

Jack Del Rio should've been "axed" when Jason Hanson nearly cut his foot off a couple of years ago.

So he's closer to Marvin Harrison or Jerry Rice. Act like you've been there before types. Thanks for the quote.
