Steelers' Starks may be out for season

Tuesday, November 09, 2010

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers tackle Max Starks has a serious neck injury involving a disc and may not play again this season.

Starks was consulting with doctors late today to determine if the injury required surgery, or if it would heal over time without surgery using physical therapy instead, a source close to Starks told the Post-Gazette.

The source emphasized that the injury does not threaten Starks career.

Starks, the Steelers starting left tackle, left Monday night's game in Cincinnati with what coach Mike Tomlin described as "stingers" in his neck. He returned to play but then left the game for good. Tomlin again described Starks' injury as a "stinger" at his press conference today.

But an MRI later showed it to be a more serious injury of a disc in the upper verterbrae or neck area.

Starks, 28, is in his seventh season with the Steelers. He has started the past three seasons at left tackle and also started two seasons at right tackle.

The Steelers lost their starting right tackle, Willie Colon, to an injury in June.

So what does this do to the value of Mendenhall, Ben, etc.

IMHO as a Steeler fa who watches every game; not much. Their line has been horrible and patched together with bubble gum and rubber bands all year and he's done OK. Starks was big, but not overly impressive

Starks wasn't great but he's been the starter at LT for a couple of years now and the last thing this line needs is to lose any starter. I suppose they will move Jonathan Scott to LT (or possibly Tony Hills) but if Starks is done for the year there isn't much quality depth to be had.

So do you think that lends itself to the Steelers leaning more toward the running game?

The Steelers are already using a balanced offense with running and passing. The offensive will remain the same. They will not lean more toward the run with Ben, Ward and Wallace on the air assault. The one player to downgrade from this is Heath Miller. As we saw in week 9 when Starks was sidelined Miller was asked to block alot more to shore up the edges. If you are a Heath Miller owner it's time to look elsewhere. I just dropped him for Moeaki, who has a very favorable schedule remaining 2010.

:goodposting: Couldn't have said it any better. This is exactly what I think about the situation as it stands today.
