McGahee to have knee scoped (1 Viewer)

I know it's only a scope and modern surgery has very quick recover times but...
Because it generally takes two weeks to a month to recover from a knee scope, McGahee could possibly return for the Sept. 7 season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
sounds like something we should be paying attention to.In what is sure to be a run oriented offense, Ray Rice seems to be carving at least a supporting role.

shhhhh...

can we :IBTL: this thread NOW, before everyone in my leagues reads it and jumps on the Rice Bandwagon?!

:wall:

and I really thought McGahee would have a terrific season, possibly his best-ever...might have to temper that a bit now..

I traded McGahee, James Harrison, and Norwood for Gore. .5 ppr. I offered Rice for a draft pick, but the owner turned me down, so I still have Rice...

Tough break for Baltimore and McGahee. It's hard not to drop him a bit with this news, he could actually become a value pick if he comes back strong.

Ray Rice will obviously move way up, he's already been creeping up but again that's still a risk because if it's only a scope, he'll be back starting VERY early in the season, if not week 1 making Ray Rice only so valuable, not valuable enough to draft him in the 7th round if McGahee is back starting for the team.

Hmmm, this reminds me a little of the Portis knee tendinitis and the hype cycle we saw from Betts. Portis ended up going two or three rounds later than his performance warranted and Betts went five or six rounds too high. I'm a big Ray Rice fan, too, but I have a feeling this is going to drive Rice's ADP into "starting RB" status in a lot of leagues and the situation just doesn't warrant that much ebullience unless we get further news that McGahee will be out for a longer period of time. I'll probably avoid the Ravens offense almost entirely if at all possible. :sadbanana:

LOL, I just posted almost the exact same thing in the Rice thread....I think this will be much ado about nothing come week 1 except that in some leagues Willis may drop quite a bit to some savvy drafters.....

This time next year McGhaee will be playing for another team. Rice is that good, and will push McGhaee out the door more sooner than later.

I really doubt that happens but who knows. What makes you think that? Willis's big roster bonus? Total Ravens rebuild? I just don't see then dumping Willis but strange things happen each year.

That's a good point, Jason. J

I read somewhere that Rice is a better fit for their offense. That's the main reason for my comment about Rice replacing McGahee soon.

 I was so down on McGahee (had him ranked #20 before this injury news) due to the team he plays on and its horrible OLine. Now everybody is gonna be down on him

since when does getting your knee scoped take 4 weeks to recover?
Didn't Mike Walker get his knee scoped at the beginning of last year?
Didn't _____(insert one of dozens of names of players that have had knees scoped and were back playing within 2 weeks)_____ get his knee scoped?
My point is that it shouldn't be taken with a gain of salt.
i agree, but unless i'm mistaken (certainly possible), arthroscopic knee surgery, or having your knee "scoped", isn't as bad as it used to be for recovery time. the 4 weeks seems to come from the beat writer's opinion, and it just seemed like a long time.

I think the writer said it accurately. 2-4 weeks is pretty standard. No two are exactly the same. And it's not like a timer goes off at xx days and all of sudden things are great. J

I can't recall McGahee having problems with his knees in the past? If he hasn't, I'm wondering if that helps the healing process. You'd think someone who's had more problems in a certain area in the past might need more recovery time compared to someone who hasn't, but I'm not sure.

I remeber McGahee having some rib trouble a couple years back in Buffalo, that's about it.

Did you miss his final college game?Tore his ACL and MCL I think.

Remember he tore his ACL at Miami and sat out his rookie season.

Seriously?

McGahee was already a pretty good value falling into the 2nd, now you might be able to get him in the 3rd. All the more reason to go WR in the 2nd.

Rice was pretty much an afterthought in most redraft leagues. I've been pretty high on his potential as one of the highest ceiling backups in the league, and considered him worth a 12-14th at least. If this news moves him up into the 8-10th, where you're choosing between him and guys like Fargas or Chester or the Carolina backs, then his ADP has exceeded his value.

One thing you have to love is the way the Ravens offense looked exactly like Miami's at the beginning of the first preseason game - get the ball in the RBs hands in space - Rice had 4 catches in limited duty.

:loco:

Between his high school injury and the famous knee shredding in the Natl Championship game, McGahee has torn every ligament in that left knee - so it's not quite as much a no brainer that he'll be as good as new as a typical "clean up"

by this comment are you referring to the Cam Cameron effect?

Friday he went in the 10th in IBLD. That's really pushing matters.

Yes, sir. The word out of Ravens camp was that Rice improved by leaps and bounds as a receiver, and they put that on display on Thursday.

Some things are different in this case than with the Portis situation. *The Ravens are putting in a new offense which features the RB often in the passing game so unlike Portis, I do feel training camp was important to Mcgahee. I also believe Mcgahee's participation in the off season OTA's was minimal. * This is a new coaching staff which usually means they have no loyalty to the returning players. Harbaugh has also been running a very hard training camp and OTA's with an emphasis on getting the players in better shape. I had read he was already disappointed with Mcgahee's lack of participation on the OTA's while Rice has been there working every day. *Maybe Cameron did it as a motivational ploy but last off season but it seemed to me that Ronnie Brown barely beat out Chatman for the job full time job. Again, maybe it was a just a ploy to motivate Brown but if so Cameron just some huge risks such as playing Brown as a kick returner during he preseason. I feel this is relevant to this as Cameron might prefer seeing Rice continue to get significant playing time even when Mcgahee returns. To me all of this has to drop Mcghaee at least a little but it might drop him to a point of being great value. Last year the Chatman talk dropped Brown around 1.5-2 rounds in most drafts I saw and he ended up being the #1 RB in PPR leagues until he got hurt.

Willis is a fairly good receiver as well and remember last year they were saying that they planned on getting him more involved in the passing game. Is it a given that Rice will be the recipient? I thought Willis would benefit, not Rice.

Willis will be the main beneficiary, as long as he's healthy, but if he's not, Rice inherits the Cameron effect. That's why I was high on him as one of the most valuable backups to begin with, pre-McGahee surgery. The fact that they confirmed it by getting Rice four receptions early just cinches it. I do think Rice can still catch 15-25 balls even with a healthy McGahee as a change of pace, but that was not a given when they drafted him because Rice was not used much as a receiver at Rutgers.

Do we know for sure the knee being scoped is his injured knee? I have kinda of assumed so, but I just wanted to make sure. I don't remember any reports of a new injury, just that it was bothering him in camp. This doesn't seem like the time to have minor surgery. It seems bad to me that if the situation was bad enough to have a typical "clean up" at this time of the year, it's still bad sign. Maybe they are just being cautious but the timing of this and if this is in fact his injured knee, has me a little worried about McGahee's long term prospects.

The report says left, and that's the one he hurt vs. tOSU and in high school.

I don't think Portis had surgery on his knee last year though. If I remember correctly it was about the same time last year Portis saw Dr. Andrews and he said "he was on the right track". Also I remember reports about Domanick Davis surgery was no big deal and then his career was over. I hear what your saying, but having surgery, even minor is more alarming at this time then knee tendinitis, I think. BTW I am not saying this is another DD situation, just that it's disturbing.

Good post meno.Carroll County Times has added to the article (but instead of updating the current link they created a new link. After I emailed the first, now non working, link to 85,000 people... )

Cameron did do some things that I thought were goofy with Brown / Chatman last year.

But Harbaugh isn't following that tact at least in the papers. Still very committed to McGahee as you can see from the last sentence.

Baltimore Ravens star running back Willis McGahee is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee as soon as today in South Florida.

McGahee's knee has been bothering him since shortly after reporting to training camp in Westminster, and he hasn't been practicing lately. This is regarded as a clean-up medical procedure.

Because it generally takes two weeks to a month to recover from a knee scope, McGahee could possibly return for the Sept. 7 season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The surgery will be performed at Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Fla., near the University of Miami campus. It's the same hospital that surgically repaired his left knee after a devastating injury in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl where he tore nearly every ligament.

McGahee was held out of the Ravens' victory over the New England Patriots last week.

Heading into that preseason opener, Ravens coach John Harbaugh expressed hope that McGahee would be able to return soon.

"We decided to take about a week and work the knee, strengthen it, get the swelling down and get him back after the game," Harbaugh said.

Although rookie runner Ray Rice has been impressive and started in McGahee's place against the Patriots, the Ravens don't currently plan to increase his role beyond a complementary presence when McGahee returns.

"Willis is our back, no question," Harbaugh said. "You need at least two good backs to get through an NFL season."

I dunno.......I'm starting to get a little worried about McGahee. I know RB is supposed to be one of the easier positions to plug-n-play, but this is an entirely new offense with new coaches - not to mention Willis is getting further & further away from his teammates as far as being in playing shape goes. Maybe as a skittish Ravens fan, I'm a little injury-phobic right now but I'm just not entirely confident that he's going to be ready or effective come early September.

Good points. This certainly won't help Willis's game shape. Last year I remember him pulling himself out of games looking totally gassed half way through a drive. This may benefit Rice, especially early in the year.

Now I think the state of the Ravens offensive line, combined with McGahee being potentially out of shape IS worth downgrading him.
