McGahee to have knee scoped (1 Viewer)

I hate to keep flogging this horse, but it's more than the injury that has me worried about McGahee - he's also behind on learning/playing in this new offense. Here's a bit from this article:

There have been questions raised about McGahee’s work ethic and commitment.

Running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery has said McGahee has a lot of work to do to fully understand the offense and needs to get in better shape.

While offensive coordinator Cam Cameron installs a new offense that features the tailback as its centerpiece, McGahee is missing valuable repetitions.

“It’s hard, but the game is mostly mental,” McGahee said. “I need to get that down pat. There are certain things you need to be on the field to see.

“Right now, they’re throwing the whole playbook at us and they want you to remember it all. What they did the first day, they might not bring it back up again until today and I’m like, ‘Man, I don’t remember all this.’”

I'm really concerned about his ability to grasp this offense quickly. He seems to be struggling with that & he may be one of those players who has to actually do it to learn it.
this is hilarious. willis, run off right-tackle. ok, coach. willis, sweep left. ok, coach. how freaking complicated can this be?

Thx for the article. I'm sure we're all surprised that Willis is having trouble with the mental aspect of the game.
:420:

McGahee admittedly didn’t report to camp in optimum condition, weighing in at 236 pounds, which is about four over his ideal playing weight.

Because he can’t run yet and the clock is ticking down to the opener, McGahee is making the most out of his aquatic workouts.

“I know it ain’t exactly running, but running in the pool is great conditioning,” McGahee said. “Just ask Michael Phelps.

The other obstacle McGahee faces is learning the playbook after skipping the majority of the offseason program with the exception of one mandatory minicamp and another voluntary minicamp.

There have been questions raised about McGahee’s work ethic and commitment.

this is a pretty BIG ommision from the last big quote...
Nonetheless, McGahee is in no apparent danger of losing his job to rookie second-round pick Ray Rice, who rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown in a 23-15 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Named to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement after rushing for 1,207 yards and seven touchdowns during his first season in Baltimore following a trade from the Buffalo Bills, McGahee met fullback Lorenzo Neal at the league’s annual all-star game. In Hawaii, they discussed the prospects of lining up in the same backfield one day.

Following Neal being cut by the San Diego Chargers and signed by Baltimore, they are slated to play together this fall. McGahee initially was unaware that Neal had been acquired as he recuperated from his surgery.

“I was excited,” McGahee said. “When I saw him, I was like, ‘When did all this happen?’ That made me want to come back quicker.”

Neal has blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher for 11 consecutive seasons, creating a path for LaDainian Tomlinson, Eddie George, Warrick Dunn and Corey Dillon.

The four-time Pro Bowl fullback has designs on forming a top-notch tandem with McGahee whenever he recovers from his knee injury.

“He’s a tough guy, he runs hard,” Neal said. “He’s a physical man, and we just want him to have a speedy recovery so we can get him out here on the field.

“We’re going to need that guy because he’s definitely a workhorse. The guy is a great back.”

Not to rain on your comedic parade, but I'm gonna guess it's more the blitz packages/protection schemes, not how to run off tackle.

This has Portis 2007 written all over it. Stud RB's health is "in question," but what's going on is really no big deal. McGahee will come back week 1, catch 5 balls out of the backfield, and be a ppr darling again. Like a previous poster said, the overreactions at this place are unreal.
Best post in this thread.
A lesson that you can never say "I won't draft that guy", because you never know when the value is going to dictate a switch from a guy being overvalued to undervalued. I honestly didn't have McGahee on my radar at his previous ADP.But to give another example of the overreaction both ways, I just finished a draft and ended up taking him at pick 51 in a 10 team, the 21st RB off the board. I figured I was then going to handcuff Rice a few rounds later because who in their right mind would have incentive to pay more when a) there were still starters and highly drafted rookies who could start still on the board, and b) McGahee may be back by game 1. But Rice actually went as the 29th RB before it got back to me, going ahead of Mendenhall, Stewart and Chris Johnson, along with others like Lendale White, Chester Taylor and Fred Taylor. Amazing.

For my part, the point has never been that Rice would beat out McGahee - at least, not in a level competition. But there's a difference in being beaten out & not being ready enough to play productively. I have no doubt that if Willis is healthy & knows the offense that he's the guy. Maybe I'm just a paranoid Ravens fan, but I see red flags all over the place in regards to McGahee being at full-strength (both mentally & physically) to start the season.

This.Plus, the terminology is completely different. I'm not sure, but I doubt Cam calls plays named "Willis run right, off tackle".

McGahee as 21st RB off the board?

Let's say he plays 13 fantasy season games (misses 2 games) and puts up ~70 yds per game for ~900 with 6 TDs, along with 26 receptions and 150. With a scoring system of 1/10, .5 ppr, and TD = 6, that would give him 154 fantasy points or 12 fantasy points per game. That would also make him 17th RB last year (according to my league's stats). And that I would say is his floor. So, in a 10 team league I could see him going as a mid-to-low end 2nd RB, but even that I would consider good value because it would be based on what I consider to be his floor. Anything lower than that is an absolute steal imo. If people are projecting lower stats than this then they have to really see him missing a number of games or being outright replaced by Ray Rice and there is nothing on the radar imo that seriously indicates either of these things will happen...at least this year.

If you think that NFL offenses are that simple, or that understanding what to do on passing plays is even close to being easy to understand, then you should probably start getting a little deeper in your understanding of the game.

I took McGahee last night in the 3rd (20 RB) and was estatic about getting him there. I don't care if he misses a week or two getting back to full strength, I can hold on until then.

With the additions of Cameron and L. Neil I think McGahee will post better tahn average numbers and I honestly don't anticipate Rice stealing his carries, especially goal line.

When I took McGahee about 5 people laughed and shouted "You do know he's not even the starter anymore" and "You know he's at risk of being cut." My reply was "We'll see who's laughing at the end of the year." There's a reason I've managed to win over 10K from these idiots in years past.

RB19 in my draft last night, after guys like Parker, McFadden, Turner, Maroney, and Thomas Jones.I think people are starting to get really down on him, and I have a feeling you'll start seeing him slip into the 4th round (or 5th) of a lot of next weekend's drafts.

I got him in round 5....56th player overall....he's falling fast for those interested. Might be a good value pick if you go wr heavy early on.

Yeah, well this is exactly what I was hoping for. People are so quick to just jump off the ledge when it comes to players like this and it represents true value for those of us who know what we're doing.

I'm in the same boat--probably going to pick him up very late in two leagues drafting this weekend--but let's keep the patting ourselves on the back down. Like it or not, it IS a risk. Some people are very, very risk-averse, and they like to stay away from players like this. More power to them.

Got him for $38 last night in my auction draft, which was a huge shock. Someone previous posted that he is moving from the overvalued to the UNDERVALUED range very quick and I totally believe it.

$200 cap and I managed to get Ray Rice as a handcuff for $10. I'm ecstatic to be paying $48 for the Baltimore running game.

He is really not dropping as much as people think he is.http://fantasyfootballcalculator.com/completed_drafts.php

Unless you think he is worth more then RB15 ADP.

I don't play in cap leagues, so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that 1/4 of your total cap wrapped up in 2 players, one of which is a starter?

Not only is there a large amount of injury risk, Mcgahee is a very average back in a below average offense. (3.9 carry career average) This is not ADP were talking about (or Portis for that matter) His value stems from him being the focal point of the Raven's offense. I believe Rice will cut into his carries even if Mcgahee is able to come back 100% from his knee problems. I don't think getting him in the fourth is a steal by any means.

I have bad news for you. In 8 completed real $ auction ppr drafts I've seen in the past 6 weeks, McGahee went for 38, 39, 37, 35, 39, 26, 24, and 27. Of course, the last 3 are the most recent and reflect his value over the course of the last 2 weeks.I got him for $27 on August 2 in Ultimate Survivor 12, the auction league. You overpaid.
