Cliffs;

Scientists are pushing back against the media narrative on CTE. It has now become a one size fits all excuse for any bad behaviour amongst pro athletes. Suicides have been reported amongst people who self misdiagnosed with CTE when they in fact had treatable conditions.

CTE is not the only brain disease. It is the only brain disease that can be linked to a huge range of effects. As the disease is still regarded as being in the hypothetical stage , it's hard to definitively prove it's effects but it's also hard to definitively disprove it's effects. Nevertheless most scientists are saying the behavioural effects of CTE are being vastly overstated. Timestamp 20:42 for the professor roasting the link between CTE and suicide.

A CTE diagnosis is subjective, it depends on the scientists who are assessing the brain. The scientists behind the 99% study have been criticised by other scientists in the field for being able to "diagnose CTE in a rock".

So for decades we mitigated the risks of brain damage one could get from tackle football, called concussions something campy and tame like "getting your bell rung", celebrated guys who could "shake it off" and get back out there like warriors do and acted surprised when old warriors like Mike Webster started acting irrationally upon retirement.

Then, we went to the other extreme with it.  NFL was sued for gargantuan sums for covering up brain damage risks, a major movie was made about the doctor who discovered CTE in football player's dead brains, all coaches in all sports at every level required to take concussion training and we set up concussion protocols.

Under react.

Then over react.

Happens all the time.  2019 candidate for this award goes to.......

"Vaping".
