Melky gives up the batting title... (1 Viewer)

There has always been a truth in the numbers to MLB for better or for worse. Melky got a boost from the roids to have the battling title number, and he and his reps apparently called up Bud asking to be removed from consideration for the batting title which he had the plate appearances to qualify for but did not want to win. This was approved in conjunction with the MLBPA.

It was labeled, a "one time ammendment" to the rule.

Which makes you wonder, if this is possible, what else is possible?

Could Armando Galagraga's imperfect game, considering he got the next out, have been rendered a perfect game?

Would Bonds, McGwire and Sosa's home run records be subject to revoke and revision to put Maris and Aaron back on top of the pile?

It seems like there is a lot more questions raised here.

@keithlaw: The "batting title" is a statistic, not an award. So, basically, Melky Cabrera asked to be exempted from math, and MLB granted it.

So dumb.

They should grant him an exception to the rule that suspended him, place him one a last place team and he can take automatic outs for the rest of the season.

Makes more sense than this.

all they did was remove the part of the rule that someone with less than 501 plate appearances can still win the batting title if you assume outs for all the additional at bats and he still leads. that was an addendum to the rules in the 80s. so while its dumb, its not like theyre ignoring the math. theyre basically saying he doesnt have enough plate appearance to qualify

i think this is a good outcome. the way i read it, the rule is amended - permanently, not just "one-time" - to say that a player under suspension cannot benefit from the "too few plate appearances" calculation. No math is changed.
