Mendenhall outlook for the coming season... (1 Viewer)

What are people's thoughts on this guy? He had a pretty decent 2009 campaign, totalling just under 1,400 total yards and 8 TDs. With the advent of Santonio being shipped out, do yall think this is a move towards running the ball more? (F?)WP is gone now and Tomlin said last month that he thinks Mendy can be the short yardage back. Anyone see a big season from this guy?

Sure hoping for one. Mendenhall dynasty owner. He has Top 10 potential for sure. Would like to see the Steelers go OL in the draft. That would help a lot.

He might start
practice what you preach

to the OP I love Mendy this year. I have him 5-7 in my RBs
From the 2 wrongs make a right school...I wanted to toss out a CNR clip but then we've really jumped the shark here. Edited to add: I'm not a big Mendy fan, so to be honest I'm not being funny when I say he might start. I watched him just go off the board at 1.05 in the PDSL Survivor League, and I'm more than bothered by that high of a selection, just seems absurd to me. He looked alright for stretches last year but I'm not ready to say he's top5 or even top10 really.

Imho Mendenhall is severely overrated - especially considering how people were bashing him last offseason.

He's had only a couple of great games in his pro career, while being pretty mediocre for most part. He averaged 3.6 YPC in three games versus Cleveland's and Kansas City's awful run defenses. Between week 10 and 17 he managed to average more than 4.0 YPC only twice.

You could say the Steelers being more run-oriented in 2010 will greatly benefit Mendenhall. But with the loss of Holmes and the uncertainty around Big Ben, there will be a lot more pressure on Mendenhall. I really doubt he is good enough (physically and mentally) to be the focal point of the Steelers' offense.

Last year Mendenhall could be had for a mid to late round pick or even via waiver wire. Now people are spending high first round picks on him. What a difference a year can make.

I will stay away from Mendenhall in the first two rounds, so I can already say that I won't have Mendenhall in any of my teams this year.

Good points. One thing to note, though, is that in a good chunk of the games where he didn't necessarily tear it up on the ground he had decent receving yards and/or TD to offset the lack of yardage per carry. Also, he seems to do much better with more carries: He had six games last year with 20 or more carries. In those games he went 20/94, 20/103, 21/80, 22/155, 24/95 and 29/165. he only had 25 receptions last year (targeted 32x) and with MeMo still there, I'm not sure that number will move much. A couple of positives are that it appears that he will be the bellcow and if you believe in Tomlin's coachspeak he will be the goal line back. Early indications are that they are moving back towards a strong defense/running game. In an era where 2-3 back systems are increasingly the norm, having a guy on a defensive minded, run first team that will most likely get a majority of carries and will also be used around the goal line, is a rare commodity. The only question, as stated above, is whether he can handle the great situation he has been handed. It would seem like he has the ability to be motivated (look to last year's benching in week 3 by Tomlin. Week 4 against SDG he rushed for 165, caught for 26 more and scored twice.) I honestly don't know much about the guy's college career except, I believe, that Pierre Thomas kept him on the bench at Illinois?

How does the suspension news and the addition of Leftwich affect Mendenhall's draft value? The news means more carries but more stacked boxes....

Thoughts?

Im more concerned with what Pitts does to improve the line. They have to draft 3 solid o-lineman in this draft. otherwise, it's more sacks, and more 3 ypc....

If the O-line is not improved I dont see a current QB on their roster than can make up for the weakness there better than Big Ben would, and he didnt do well under it last year compared to years before.

Mendy wont perform to his potential without a stronger line............I worry more that he will be injured when not protected.

I bump him zero spots on my current ADP due to Big Ben molesting women.

Yeah....Big Ben being out really hurts his value short term.....and they do need to improve the OL big time.

I think he is no question a 2nd tier back with Big Ben with the present OL and now maybe a third tier if the QB play is putrid without Big Ben. I watched him play a ton last season. He was not bad but not elite. In PPR though he has a lot of value if things falling into place with the OLd improving and Big Ben getting back on the field sooner rather than later.
