Merrill Hoge on Young/Leinart (1 Viewer)

"I wouldn't take Young on the first day as a QB."

"I wouldn't take Leinart in the first round."

"Cutler is the only QB I'd take in the first round, but not in the top 10."

On sportscenter just now.

Nothing Hoge ever says is worth the breath it took to say it.

The guy is as worthless an 'expert' as they come.

Your hyperbole aside, he did say that Caddy Williams and Ronnie Brown would both be excellent pro football players and he felt that JJ Arrington would not be productive at the NFL level.

None of those three opinions were much different from what I recall the consensus was, particularly with Williams and Brown.

So he went out on a huge limb by predicting 2 RB's drafted in the top 5 of the NFL draft would be excellent and a RB picked in the 2nd wouldn't.I don't see how this makes Hoge look good at all, his above assumptions were pretty much common sense based on draft position.

how can ESPN let him stay on the air after saying that? Im all for diferent opinions. Hell, im not high on either player. But to say they should go as low as he did is a total joke.

Keeping him on the air and claiming he is an expert makes ESPN look foolish

Someone refresh my memory. Wasn't he predicting some ridiculous Super Bowl score this year or last year?

I'm trying to remember, but I thought he was saying Philly would lose to NE by some huge number.

TIA

He also came out last year and said that Mike Williams would be a bust. I remember him arguing with Kiper about it (Kiper was calling Williams a HOF player). He took a lot of heat for that at the time. It's awfully early but so far he seems to be correct.

He's a protected class under the ADA

I remember him saying these things last year too. He seems to hate all QB's.
I guess if you're a former Steeler's RB you don't think you need QB's. If it were up to some in the Pittsburgh organization at different times in their history, they'd just run a wishbone offense and pound the ball 9 out of 10 times. (Exaggeration intended).

I wish there was a website that tracked what these talking heads say so it was easier to hold them accountable. As it is, they will forever bring up predictions that were right and ignore the other 100 insane things they said. I remember Hodge saying a lot crazy stuff around draft time last year, but the only one I recall now is him saying Mike Willaims would be a bust. I sure wish I remembered the other things.

I find his shtick rather amusing. He's the comical sidekick on ESPN. Just because the humor is unintentional doesn't make it any less funny.

Not sure about that situation, but he definitely has it in for Philly. I remember when they were 5-0 (or maybe 6-0), he was guaranteeing that they would not make the playoffs. :boxing:

He compared all of the QBs to Carson Palmer(apparently he was alway very high on him) and said that none of them come close to him.His big knock on Leinart was accuracy. He showed how even the big 4th down completion against ND was not very accurate. His big knock on Young was lack of success in a pro style offense and that he couldn't throw effectively in the NFL.

When comparing to Palmer, he said that none of these QBs would be as good as Palmer is, therefore none should be a 1st round pick. That doesn't make much sense to me. Obviously, teams are hoping their QB develops as Palmer has, but it is not realistic to think that ALL 1st round QB's will be as good as Palmer. I guess all 1st round RBs have to be as good as LT to justify their draft status?

I don't agree with the first day thing on Young, but I wouldn't take Leinart in the first round, probably not the first 2 rounds (noodle arm, average QB IMO). Also, Young is the most over-rated player I have ever seen. His ROY award was comically funny. MJD was the man. I guess a sixty something qb rating by a rookie is unheard of these days. Also, he is borderline mentally ######ed (not that there is anything wrong with that)

In before the Vince Young Nation pounces on you.

And surely "Matt Jones" wouldn't be biased one bit here :bag:

He's just mad because a rookie QB lead a terrible Titan team to a better season than a much more talented Jag team. I'd say Leftwich is much more overrated. Had they started Young from the beginning of the season, they would have made the playoffs.Apparently rushing stats don't matter? Young had 553 ru. yds and 7 TDs, add those stats to his passing stats, and he you have a much more accurate and higher rating. Sorry to break it to you, but the Jags are going to have to deal with VY for a long long time, good luck you will need it. I'm just glad he's not in the Broncos Division.

I wouldn't trust Vince Young to a Fischer-Price Playbook, the guy is more Terri Schiavo than Terry Bradshaw. Just my 2 cents. I wonder if he's even aware how much money he makes or if he just sort of carries around a wad of cash and asks what this many can buy. I don't know what I'd do if I was a Titans fan, at the end of the day your quarterback has velcro cleats and wears a jockstrap on his head.

 You should actually try watching the game of football sometime. If you did you would realize that you are terribly wrong, and that with your 2 cents your a broke #####.

Just a warning from a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Don't get caught up in the adding rushing yards & TDs to the passing stats and using them to bump up the passer ratings, especially with rookie QBs. People used to do this to Kordell Stewart. For instance, 1997 was Kordell's first season as a starting QB. His passing numbers wer actually pretty good: 236-440-21-17 and then people added on his rushing stats: 88-476-11. We were all dancing in the streets with the prospects of a QB that could account for 32 TDs in a season. He never did it again and in fact he never came close. I am not saying that VY is another Kordell Stewart. VY may turn out to be a great QB in the NFL. I just wouldn't go carving his bust for the HoF based on his rookie season.

 I don't really agree with your take on Young, but this line made me laugh.

Fair enough, but I don't recall Kordell showing the kind of leadership VY did. It's the attribute many of us were pimping him for prior to the season. It's still his strongest attribute. FWIW, I maintain passer rating is one of the most overrated stats in the NFL.

Irony. As far as "I don't know what I'd do if I was a Titans fan", last I checked they had the same record (8-8) as Jacksonville.

Not a surprising take from a Jax fan. Two of Vince's worst games this season were against Jacksonville, and I doubt their fans watched Vince play in many other games, so their view of his abilities might be a little skewed. That being said, MJD is good, but he did not have the same level of impact on his team that Vince did, and RB is about 10 times easier to play as a rookie than QB is, so you have to take that into account when comparing their seasons.

And clearly you are not biased, bitter Jags fan. Just because your first round QB is a fat bust, doesn't mean they all are. Enjoy the David Garrard era.

For the record, I am a Titans fan who was 100% against the Vince Young pick. In fact, I was making some of the same jokes our friend Matt Jones is making. Of course, then I actually watched the games, and was able to formulate a more informed opinion.

Vince Young is my fullproof bonafide NFL bust. He's a running quarterback that doesn't have great speed (I'd guess somewhere between 4.5-4.6) and lacks agility. In the NFL the defensive players are so fast, so I don't see his 'running ability' helping him too much; it will only get him injured. Every game I've watched of his didn't impress me with his throwing the ball. He seems to float too many balls, the passes lack velocity. Now, if he is drafted by the Titans and gets a year or two to work on his mechanics and bulks up, maybe he has a chance. I just try to picture him being sucessful in the NFL and I just don't see it. I'm usually pretty good at evaluating quarterbacks, I hate to brag but I was on the Roethlisberger wagon in 2004 and on the Alex Smith sucks ### wagon, too. Those are two good wagons to be on. Also, am I the only one that sees similarities between Peyton Manning and Matt Leinhart?

The one thing I hate about this board is how people will revise history just to make themselves look right. Matt Jones came out and called VY a bust. Then VY is the rookie of the year, and Matt Jones tries to argue that he didn't have a very good year and is overrated. Makes the board a lot worse.

Mike Vick set the world on fire early as well. Vince Young needs to continue his development as an NFL passer or his career arch will mimic Vick's. I'm not saying it will, but Young still needs to improve a great deal in order to lead the Titans where Steve McNair did.

I'd still rather have Leinart or Cutler leading my NFL team long-term.

I see similarities between "Matt Jones" & Ryan Leaf, actually. Any more revisionist history?

Clearly someone doesn't get sarcasm (Manning Leinart). Anyways, I was surprised that Young ran as well as he did, but he wasn't impressive throwing the ball and alot of credit in their 8-8 record goes to the defense. He did alright. But I still think he's a bust, and only time will tell. Also, I bet his rushing yards this season will be his career high. Finally, I'm not a jaguars fan, I'm a New England Giants fan, durrrr.

credit to the defense? you mean the #32 ranked worst defense in the league?? :hey:

I can't stand Hoge. The only player who makes adifference on a team or the only player that will be a star according to him is the "factor back". Gimme a break. Titans points allowed in 8 losses: 239, or 30 per game. Titans points allowed in 8 wins: 162, or 20 per game. The Titans defense gave up 37+ three times in the season, all losses. They gave up 23+ 7 times, and were 1-6 in those games. In the 9 games where they gave up 22 or less, they were 7-2. It's possible that Young provided the spark that motivated their defense, or that he helped sustain drives that kept the defense rested, but it's pretty compelling that the Titans' resurgence was closely tied to their defense.

I don't quite get the sarcasm. Do you think Peyton Manning was that much better than Leinart when Manning was a rookie? Clearly, Peyton Manning is in a class of his own. However, his rookie numbers are unimpressive and can be compared to many other rookie QBs including Leinart. A comparison of Manning to someone like Vick would be clear sarcasm as their styles and achievements are so different. Comparing the rookie seasons of Leinart and Manning is not. As to V. Young, he is not your typical drop back, throw out of bounds QB as we all can agree. His passing numbers will probably never be near the top of the league but the guy can break down a defense and create big plays during the course of a game. The guy produces wins and because of that he will be considered a very good NFL QB.

Could you explain a couple things? First of all, you need to define bust, so I can reference your opinion of what that means (and hold you to it later). And how can you think his rushing stats this year will be his career high, when he only played 13 Games, and was a rookie. Logical reasoning would say his worst year would be his rookie season, especially when you say he is too stupid to understand an NFL offense. With a year behind him, he will only become better suited for the NFL Style. Of course, logic does seem beyond you. As far as the Leinart Manning comparison, since you say it's sarcasm, are you saying Leinart is going to be a bust as well? You are giving Matt "The Great White American Hope" Jones a bad name with all of your idiotic rhetoric. And clarify that New England Giants statement please.

I think his rushing numbers will be a career high because defenses will gameplan to contain him more, alot of coaches did not expect him to have much success in the nfl because everyone is fast in the nfl. I don't expect Leinart to be a bust but I expect him to be very mediocre. And another thing, Peyton Manning's rookie season was one of the best. I believe his 26 touchdowns are still a rookie record, he threw like 28 INT's I think but 12 or so was within his first 3 or 4 games. He had a pretty remarkable rookie season in my opinion, much more impressive than Leinarts or anyone not named Marino that I can think of. Unlike Roethlisberger, the team Manning was handed the keys to was pretty pathetic (3-13) if memory serves.

Anyways, By bust I mean Vince Young will never have any of the following:

A 4,000 Yard Passing season

A 30 Passing Touchdown Season

A 95 or above Quarterback Rating

A 65% or higher Comletion Percentage

an 8.0 Yard or higher Yards/Pass Attempt

Hell, I'd settle for

3,600 yards, 25 TD's, 92+ QB rating, 63% completion percentage, 7.5 YPA....

Those are numbers I'd expect from a top 5 pick QB.

Well,in Jaws defense he does make Hoge look like a flag football analyst. I think he has good football knowledge and analytical skills.. I've just soured on how he and Hoge start to debate each other on a topic and wind up arguing. No,I'm right, NO I"M right.Childish behavior.

Not reaching those expectations in no way constitute being a bust. You've dug yourself into a hole here and are now reaching for ways of justifying your accusations. He was drafted to lead his team to wins and hopefully a championship. He wasn't necessarily drafted to do any of things you've listed.
