Jose Reyes 6yr/$106M...seems like a lot of money
too much for what he is worth on the field.....BUT Marlins wanting to make a big splash with Miami residents and visitiors and they NEEDED to add some marquis players so maybe he sells enough tickets to be worth the contractJose Reyes 6yr/$106M...seems like a lot of money
I never heard of him so he isn't getting me thru the gate. Seems like he was a .280 hitter and has little power in his game, then he hit .337 on a contract year and cashed in. Seems like a sucker that Miami bought.too much for what he is worth on the field.....BUT Marlins wanting to make a big splash with Miami residents and visitiors and they NEEDED to add some marquis players so maybe he sells enough tickets to be worth the contractJose Reyes 6yr/$106M...seems like a lot of money

In before MOP asks who Hanley is.He seems like he would be a natural at 3rd.So where does Hanley go? 3B? 2B? CF? Another team?
Never heard of him. Looks like he's coming off 11 years of mediocre performance and has little speed to his game. Looks like he's looking to "cash in" and the Marlins are probably suckers enough to give the money to him. Certainly isn't getting me through the gate though.who is this Pujols guy?
I suspect they'll try to trade Sanchez for pitching help. He's a cost-controlled, league average 1B and should bring something in return. I doubt he's in the mix for 3B.If they sign Pujols, what do they do with Gaby Sanchez? Looks like he played some 3B in the minors. Could he go there and Hanley to CF?Reyes, Hanley, Gaby, Pujols, Stanton is pretty sick.
I like Reyes right now, but think the Marlins will end up regretting this deal after 2 years. Have little trust in Reyes tender hammys.

I know who he is.What's so special about Reyes? If they sign Pujols, what do they do with Gaby Sanchez? Looks like he played some 3B in the minors. Could he go there and Hanley to CF?

Looks like he has missed 70-80 games over the last 2 years...I like Reyes right now, but think the Marlins will end up regretting this deal after 2 years. Have little trust in Reyes tender hammys.
Thanks Bill, the SEC conference has their hands in everythingSEC investigating the Marlins stadium financing.

MOP, that's the government financial "watchdog", not the college football conference.
:147:MOP clueless? Seems out of character.
From what I remember reading last year, speed guys actually hold up very well as they age. I'm not going to say whether Reyes will continue to get dinged up but I see no reason to think his skills will fall off when healthy.Crawford is a speed guy and he sucked but Dunn is a power guy and he sucked too. Sometimes free agents signings blow up in your face.I like Reyes right now, but think the Marlins will end up regretting this deal after 2 years. Have little trust in Reyes tender hammys.Speed guys usually do not age well. Mets fans should be happy.
...except for the sentence about playing great defense (although UZR rates him very highly for some reason). How is it possible for any baseball fan to not have heard of Reyes? I can understand not really following the stats he's put up but flat out not hearing of him? Why are you even in the baseball forum? As far as what makes him special? He plays great defense at a very important position (it's called shortstop - plays between second and third base). He's fire on the basepaths (30 sb's is his floor). He's in his prime (28). His W.A.R (wins above replacement) was about 6.He's a star who will help attract fans and other free agents. He can still miss one or two dozen games per year and be worth his contract. If money isn't much of an obstacle then this was a fantastic signing for the fish.
I went with uzr stats. His fielding percent is consistently ungood to mediocre (even somewhat comparable to Jeter in some aspects) but I figured that was because his range is plus. I can understand not really following the stats he's put up but flat out not hearing of him? Why are you even in the baseball forum? We have a lot of people who don't know anything about football and they are allowed to post around here.

I agree. He reminds me of Kenny Lofton.Reyes will be entering his 10th year. When Loftin entered his 10th year, it was his streak of All Star games ended, and he was never the same.Had some pretty good years, but not 100M dollar years.I will miss Jose, but as a Mets fan, I am glad I am not having to wait for the show to drop in 1-2 years.Sorry, I should have added "with a history of hamstring/leg problems".Yeah, this isn't right at all.I like Reyes right now, but think the Marlins will end up regretting this deal after 2 years. Depends on what base you are standingHINT: the basepaths aren't in a straight line.
I love the deal for the Fish. Marlins now have two batting champs at the top of the order. Even without Pujols Marlins are substantially improved. If they can add Pujols it'd be a bigger coup than BronBron to the Heat. They screwed up last year with the Buck deal but are improving quickly. If they'd have been patient they could have had Doumit for a fraction of the price they paid for Buck and Doumit > Buck. The hammy issue is legit and it clearly was a concern. Werth, Crawford and arguably Holliday all got better deals.
28-year-old batting champ who plays SS. I think it's a good deal at the price they got. I thought someone was going to get crazy and go 7/140.
Buck is much better defensively, right? I'd say Buck>Doumit because of the defense and the fact that he's on the field more.I love the deal for the Fish. From the little researching I've done, and that isn't much, I don't think either are in the top 10 defensively. Buck = more durable but at 5 times the price. My understanding is that he is great at "handling" pitchers. I'd still rather have Doumit.Buck is much better defensively, right? As a Cardinals fan, I'd obviously rather see Pujols stay in St. Louis, but I don't want to see them break the bank to keep him. If he does leave, they got his best years for basically a discount, while the Marlins will be overpaying him big time. And if Albert would rather take a little more money to go play in front of half empty stadiums rather than stay in a city where he has been adored for 11 years, then more power to him.
I totally agree. Plus, if you have to give him a 10 year deal, what are you going to get out of him those last 4 years? Paying a guy $25 million or so to hit .280 with 20 homers doesn't make much sense.'Ghost Rider said:As a Cardinals fan, I'd obviously rather see Pujols stay in St. Louis, but I don't want to see them break the bank to keep him. If it's going to take ten years, the Cardinals might as well bronze him and put him outside Busch Stadium for the last couple of years.I totally agree. What an ingrate. I hope they send him to KC or Seattle. Let's see how he likes them apples.Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports that Hanley Ramirez does not want to play third base and wants to be traded if he can't play shortstop. The Marlins seem to be under the assumption that Ramirez will be a good soldier and move to the hot corner, but it might not be that simple. President of baseball operations Larry Beinfest has given no indication that he's planning to deal the shortstop, but it sounds like Hanley might force his way out. Stay tuned.

Hayes or at the time they had Baker. I'm sure a nice contract extension would convince Hanley to take a few steps to his right.Looks like Hanley might try to force his way out:

No being reported that he didn't ask for a trade just unhappy about move. Looks like he may get over it but he's got no leverage. He's about to become the 3rd best player in the clubhouse that already thinks he's annoying and childish.
