Michael Bush breaks thumb on final carry of the night (1 Viewer)

McFadden was terrible tonight 7/9 and that was not completions out of attempts. Anytime you get a shot to start it could mean good thngs but this OL needs a bruiser like Bush behind it, McFadden dances around too much and there are simply no holes to find. Bush is nimble to a degree too but he can grind out yds even 2 and 3 yd gains which help move the chains, McFadden is just doing nothing.

In DMac's defense though he has been injured most of training camp. Broken thumb is about a month to heal yes/no?

Depends on if there is any ligament damage. It is his left thumb so i guess that's mildly good news. He and McFadden were both yucking it up on the field with Rathman after the game if that means anything.

It all depends on which hand he carrys the ball in. Its proballt 2-4 weeks to heal which means he may miss a game or two.

Yeah and the more I think about it he would be a walking target for anyone to hit him in the broken finger. He probally out the first game or two. But according to this he played through the injury tonightUnfortunately for the Raiders, Jason Campbell's stinger was not the biggest injury of the night. Defensive back Joey Thomas suffered a concussion after a killer hit by Mike Mitchell was laid on the receiver Thomas was covering. HB Michael Bush, the Raiders number one rushing threat, fractured his thumb, but played through the injury. Tom Cable said they will not know how serious the injury is until the hand is seen by a specialist. This injury could have a potential for devastation because Darren McFadden carried the ball one time for nine yards and six other times for 0 yards.

It all depends on which hand he carrys the ball in.
I guess that he never switches hands when he runs on occasion.

Bush's post game comments:

–Bush fractured his left thumb on his seventh and final carry. He gained 23 yards and scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run.

“A safety came down, instead of getting my legs he got my hand and the ball,’’ Bush said. “That’s part of the game.’’

Bush said he wouldn’t know his status until he talked the medical staff Sunday, but it wasn’t an encouraging sight to see Michael Bennett tying his shoes in the locker room. He said he’s never played with a broken bone his hand before but noted optimistically, “It’s just the hand, hopefully I’ll be back, I mean, a hand to a leg is totally different. I broke my leg and I bounced back from that and I’ll do the same with my hand.’’

Opportunity for Run DMC!
Unfortunately for Bush, that may be the case and his window to the starting job may have hit a pothole. While Bush clearly seems to be the better back, it's not like he has been setting the world on fire during the preseason. Most importantly, the organization has a big vested interest in giving McFadden every opportunity to be the guy, having drafted him at #4 overall. If Bush is out for any meaningful amount of time and McFadden has a good start to the season, the latter could have the job mainly to himself with Bush - not McFadden - as the complementary guy.

I don't know about that. McFadden seems to be what he is, a R. Bush type player that can't seem to run between the tackles and needs space to be effective. Even last night he was 7/9. He's a career sub 4 ypc and I don't see any big reason why it should change much at this point. Bush is going to be the workhorse between the tackles, goal line/short yardage back. The thumb is on his non-carrrying hand so they'll likely cast it up and I wouldn't be shocked if he was out there week 1. If anything I see this as an opportunity for owners to overdraft McFadden and underdraft Bush.

I personally think McFadden stinks a a RB BUT they got no one else ( Bennet and Rock) so this is a huge opportunity for McFadden if Bush misses week 1. A solid game can make the split more 50-50 or even in McFaddens favor. personally I doubt you see more then last nights 7-9 from McFadden but the opportunity is there.

Great. Just great. Probably happened the exact second I put his sticker on the draft board. Hope it's short term and doesn't create fumbling problems. He's the guy - McFadden change of pace only.

I wouldnt draft DMC in the last round if someone paid me. This injury doesnt sound too serious, and I like MBush about as much as anybody late, so this should only help him drop a couple rounds.

Well, I felt last night I should use my last rb slot and cuff Bush, so I did decide to take the flier on McFadden in the 20th.. but I still dread actually ever possibly having to play him. I was a lot more interested in the upside of Bush, and I am still hoping this doesn't effect him for more than a game or two.

I wonder if he will be headed home to see a specialist? Kutz and Kleinert in Louisville are the best in the world when it comes to hand injuries. This is probably doesn't warrant their level of expertise though.

I don't know if I would say that. If he's smart he'd want an expert opinion even if he doesn't do what they suggest.

Raiders running back Michael Bush was scheduled to see a hand specialist after breaking his left thumb during Saturday night's exhibition against the San Francisco 49ers.

His status for the Raiders Sept. 12 regular season opener against the Tennessee Titans remains uncertain, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Bush was injured on a hit in the second quarter. He left the game having rushed seven times for 23 yards and a touchdown.

There's some reports that the Raiders will bring back Bush quickly, having him play with a protective cast over his thumb.

But personally, I would be extremely cautious about playing a running back with a cast on his hand. In the playoffs following the 1995 season, I was at a game between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

Go on......

I wouldnt play him with the cast , I mean its 2 games at best But I guess when all you have on your roster is junk like Bennet, Mcfadden and Carthwright you would rush your best RB bback as quick as you can. Perosnally I would not.

Sorry the rest of that article

But personally, I would be extremely cautious about playing a running back with a cast on his hand. In the playoffs following the 1995 season, I was at a game between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers came in as the defending Super Bowl champions and were heavily favored to get past the Packers. But on the 49ers' first play from scrimmage, Steve Young completed a pass in the flat to fullback Adam Walker, who was playing with a cast on his broken thumb. Walker was hit by linebacker Wayne Simmons and fumbled the ball. Cornerback Craig Newsome swooped in to grab the ball and returned the fumble 31 yards for a touchdown, giving Green Bay a lead it never relinquished in pulling off a monumental upset.

I relate that episode as a cautionary tale for anyone who might think that playing with a cast, especially for a running back, is no big deal. The Raiders should be cautious in the ways they use Bush, as long as he needs a cast over his thumb and hand.

Was the cast the reason for the fumble?

I suppose that they knew he had the cast and went for it knowing he didnt have a tight grip.

The real factor for Bush is if they need a pin in his finger or not. If not he can play with a cast I suppose but if its a pin type thing it might take a little longer to heal and he may miss 2-3 games.

.....As for Bush, he was awaiting word after seeing a doctor today, and while that visit has probably concluded by now, it’s by no means a sure thing Cable will will go into great detail about it.

As much as it’s easy from the sidelines to say all Bush has to do is wrap it up and play, the injury is on Bush’s left hand _ which happens to be his dominant hand. He throws (and bowls) left-handed. A broken thumb would also be a problem while pass blocking, an area in which Bush has become proficient.

Campbell, Bush updates

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer

Sunday, August 29th, 2010 at 5:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A few highlights from Tom Cable’s conference call:

– Quarterback Jason Campbell has a right wrist injury that is more significant at this point than his stinger. It happened on the series previous to the one in which he was injured. He’s had an MRI and X-rays and Cable said it will be evaluated this week.

– Running back Michael Bush will have a “procdure” on his fractured left thumb but wont’ necessarily miss the opener. Cable said Bush would be “protected” but not with a cast.

Bush had a procedure but will not need a cast ( just some padding) and might be ready for week 1

Bush, Campbell could both be back for opener

Michael Bush - RB - OAK - Aug. 29 - 8:28 p.m. ET

Raiders coach Tom Cable isn't ruling out Michael Bush (thumb) or Jason Campbell (wrist, stinger) for the season opener.

Cable did reveal Sunday that Bush needs a "procedure" on his fractured thumb, but he will not need a cast. He may be able to practice and play with extra padding on his left hand

Raiders RB Bush to have thumb surgery

Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush will undergo surgery to repair his broken left thumb.

The procedure is being reported by the Oakland Tribune, which also says that Oakland head coach Tom Cable stated that there is a good possibility that Bush will recover in time for Oakland's season opener against Tennessee on September 12.
