After spending a night to think about it, Michael Floyd decided to stay right where he was.
In what was a complicated and surprising call, Notre Dame's standout junior receiver has elected to return to the Irish and put off the NFL for another year, the school announced Wednesday.
The NFL's pull on Floyd was quite strong and this was clearly a difficult choice, underscored by Floyd meeting twice with Irish coach Brian Kelly in the past two days and then taking a night to sleep on it before making his decision.
Floyd received a third-round grade from the NFL Advisory Committee, which was lower than the Irish receiver had hoped for, instantly infusing some doubt into his mind about the pro aspirations.
There is little more the 6-foot-3 wideout can accomplish production-wise on the college level, after amassing 171 catches for 2,539 yards and a school-record 28 touchdown grabs in three seasons. But in returning to Notre Dame, Floyd avoids a draft class stocked with talented wideouts and could move into first-round territory with a solid 2011 season.
As for the impact on Notre Dame's 2011 season? It can't be understated. Instead of searching for a new go-to impact receiver, the Irish have that question settled. Assuming the quarterback situation works out smoothly and the defense remains as reliable as it was at the end of 2010, it's no stretch to think the Irish could make a push toward a BCS bowl with Floyd in the fold.
