Michael Floyd staying at ND (1 Viewer)

After spending a night to think about it, Michael Floyd decided to stay right where he was.

In what was a complicated and surprising call, Notre Dame's standout junior receiver has elected to return to the Irish and put off the NFL for another year, the school announced Wednesday.

The NFL's pull on Floyd was quite strong and this was clearly a difficult choice, underscored by Floyd meeting twice with Irish coach Brian Kelly in the past two days and then taking a night to sleep on it before making his decision.

Floyd received a third-round grade from the NFL Advisory Committee, which was lower than the Irish receiver had hoped for, instantly infusing some doubt into his mind about the pro aspirations.

There is little more the 6-foot-3 wideout can accomplish production-wise on the college level, after amassing 171 catches for 2,539 yards and a school-record 28 touchdown grabs in three seasons. But in returning to Notre Dame, Floyd avoids a draft class stocked with talented wideouts and could move into first-round territory with a solid 2011 season.

As for the impact on Notre Dame's 2011 season? It can't be understated. Instead of searching for a new go-to impact receiver, the Irish have that question settled. Assuming the quarterback situation works out smoothly and the defense remains as reliable as it was at the end of 2010, it's no stretch to think the Irish could make a push toward a BCS bowl with Floyd in the fold.

With Blackmon likely to return to OSU, his stock would've skyrocketed if he came out. Go out next year and he's back where he started with Blackmon and Jeffery still ahead of him. Oh well, it's hard to rip on a kid too much for staying in school.

Definitely came down to the third round grade he got. Leads me to believe hes overvalued around here compared to the nfl.
Watching him play, and then seeing he got a 3rd round grade just makes me scratch my head. He really stands out. As a dynasty owner who trade his first round pick this year, I am happy Floyd is staying.

As an ND fan I am happy, but I think that kid is more than ready.

With improved QB play, his numbers will be off the charts next year.

This draft is not nearly as strong as it could have been. 2012 may be the draft picks to have now. It's a weak RB draft outside of Ingram. It's a weak QB draft period, and now the WRs could get considerably weaker if Blackmon doesn't declare.

Disagree on it being a weak RB class. They have all declared and its stronger than last year imo.

Ok, let's call it an average RB class. So was 2010.

;)Had he declared, I really don't see how it would have been possible for him to last to the 3rd round, there's just no way it would have happened imo. I'm kind of surprised at his decision, but I guess holding pretty well every Notre Dame WR record means something to him, as well as getting a degree.

But he doesn't have to worry about Green, Jones, or baldwin either so it balances out IMO
