Michael Irvin (1 Viewer)

From the New York Post:

Is ESPN on the verge of cutting ties with NFL analyst Michael Irvin?

One industry source believes the decision has already been made, and that some at the network view the outspoken Irvin as a ticking time bomb, ready to explode into a public-relations nightmare.

ESPN did not confirm or deny the report, but issued a statement, saying: "We are currently in the process of discussing studio assignments for next season."

There is speculation that newly retired Bill Parcells could end up at the network, but there is no indication that a deal is imminent.

They cover the HoF inductions so I doubt they cut him. He might be a time bomb waiting to explode but he is good for ratings and adds some serious color an otherwise bland group of Berman, Young, and Jackson...put me to sleep baby. I don't think I watch much pregame to begin with but Irvin gets my attention. If they axed him, they would go find another controversial guy. There is enough stale reporters in Bristol, guys like Irvin attract people to watch the show. People at FBG are going to watch anyways...do you really think the NFL hires guys like Prince to perform for the hardcore fans? We are going to watch no matter what but you add in a great halftime show and everyone tunes in. Same thing with Irvin. He's not really there for the majority of us.

Also he played for the Cowboys, had a dominant role on a team that won 3 SB in 4 years...he represents an era just like Steve Young who played against him 3 or 4 times in the NFC Championship. Remember when Jackson and Berman would talk like SF/Dallas NFC Championships would happen for the next 10 years...it was era, and it's something ESPN has captured for their pregame show...it's a conscience choice on their part I believe.

Please get that cocaine sniffin'

mink wearin' freak out of there, quickly.

Tiki Barber would be a fine replacement, imo.

Hey Kevin, Sure you would but you will keep watching because of guys like Mort and Jaws...Irvin isn't there to entertain you and I as much as he is there to draw attention and get viewers away form CBS/Fox, and also to get people to tune in. You're a hardcore fan, they have you already...Irvin is there to attract more people.

Is this some kind of new development in his personality/character?I kind of thought this was always the case. If so, why is it only a problem now?

Who, exactly? Fans of the wide-knot tie look?Irvin's way over-rated. We can all live without his blathering on Sundays.

Actually, as a hardcore fan, Irvin is one of the reasons they don't have me. The trend towards replacing information with "entertainment" to attract other viewers is the reason I watch less and less pre-game each year. And guys like Irvin whose job is to SHOUT THEIR OPINION REGARDLESS OF REASONABLE ARGUMENTS OR FACTS are the worst part of that trend.IMHO :bowtie:

At this point, the best way to get last minute information is to come to this board.

They are to late for me. I quit watching ESPN Pre-game in 2005 because of Irvin. This guy is possible the worst speaker in the history of broadcasting and has no business being on TV. I won't even get into talking about the content of what he is saying.

i can agree that having some 'entertainment' would be great, but the guy has little to no clue about what he is talking about. Sometimes it seems mostly like drug induced blabbering. It's "Thug U", not THE U. amazing he can even claim to have gone to a Division 1 college.

So if you are correct that the role they are trying to fill is entertainment, do you think they'd be better off finding someone who can entertain becaues he has a personality that draws people because they like it, rather than entertaining by being someone that people don't like?Take the Mike and Mike show vs Irvin. Mike and Mike have a good interaction with each other which is what draws fans. Back in the "good ole days" of ESPN, Oberman and Patrick on Sports Center. The older MNF booths. Those are all great examples of dynamics that drew people through positive means instead of by showing off someone that they knew viewers would dislike.Isn't that a route we should all be hoping they'll go for over the Howard Stern approach where people only watch for the drama and to see what idiot thing the guy says next?

Irvin doesn't draw viewers from Fox or CBS, it's probably just the opposite. All he does is wear loud suits, yell even louder to get a point across, and makes excuses for the T.O.'s of the NFL. ESPN will be a lot better off wothout him, the true football fan wants some entertainment, but wants more news and updates rather than Irvin telling everyone how good he used to be. I hope the report is true, I stopped weatching ESPN on Sundays b/c of Irvin, I'd rather watch JB on CBS or even Fox.

I don't mind Irvin...I'd rather listen to the original thought and perspective he brings to the table than a Mr. Master of the Obvious Tom Jackson.

You've never heard of Shannon Sharpe I presume?

Lots of hate here. I often don't agree with him, but I like the guy. Would definitley rather see someone like him than a boring guy. :nerd:

Dead serious.Dude does not know how to listen. The constant diarrhea of the mouth is getting old.
:nerd: Tiki's the kind of guy who reads the thesaurus nightly just so he can spew out some little-used words to impress.I get the feeling he needs a continuous flow of oohing and ahhing from his audience so he can feel he's some sort of 'thinking man's' uber-athlete.I'd say that he'll flame out in broadcasting, except that a lot of similar types do find some success in that field (B Gumble, B Costas, H Cosell).Id

Excellent points. I will bring it up at the next Bristol Reporters Softball League Game. I don't disagree with what you and others are saying...here's a wild idea...how bout putting Joe and David on a internet closed circuit studio for subscribers so we have something to watch and keep up with on Sunday Mornings...yes the forum is a great place to tune into but how bout a live broadcast show? Maybe you could bring it up at the next FBG Softball Tourney.

Shannon Sharpe is the worst speaker, but actually (if you can understand him) says some meaningful things (overall not good). Irvin brings NOTHING to the table. When was the last time he said something that made you think? NEVER, he is obnoxious and annoying and brings ZERO. Salisbury stinks too. He thinks if he says something as absolute it makes it right. That guy is wrong more than any other announcer.

I'll take the guy who is boring over someone who threatens women's lives to keep them from testifying and plea bargains to other charges to avoid getting charged with it.

I have no problem with former players with opinions who aren't afraid to voice them.

Having a bias (TO, Dallas) that is so blatant that it is comical to the point where your co-hosts (who aren't on the same level, thankfully) is ridiculous. Then add in Irvin's background and off the field escapades and I would rather have someone else.

Not bland personalities (CBS, I'm talking to you), but personalities. Give me a passionate former player who can voice his views in 30 seconds or less. Surely they exist. Deion Sanders is the first that comes to mind.

as a Giants fan, I don't want to see anymore of Tiki. I've had enough of Tiki Barber's self-centered, me-first dog-n-pony show. But I agree 100% that Irvin has got to go!

I envision Tiki ending up doing something like Ahmad Rashad on Saturday mornings or cable.

Tiki is nice but boring as hell.

Joe, I respect your viewpoint, but Irvin is just plain bad! He is like watching WWE wrestling. No substance, just loud.I'd like to see an ex-defensive player with a strong personality there. How about a Mike Golic or Tony Siragusa type?

Reading this thread, it occured to me that I hadn't watched one pregame show all season, though I never miss the games. I guess I don't really care what any of those guys have to say. Is this normal?

That is the beauty of DVR ot Tivo. You can skip through whatever you want to get to what you need to see.

I tend not to watch the pre-game shows anymore, I find I'm watching enough tv during the day with watching 3 games. My Sunday mornings are spent here getting the latest news from FBG.

Count me in as one of those who finds Michael Irvin to be loud, obnoxious, and more style than content. I particularly hate the interviews he does where he's buddy/buddy with anyone he interviews. I'd much rather listen to Mort's insider news, or Steve Young because he seems insightful.

What ESPN should do is steal Marshall Faulk away from the NFL Network.

Well said indeed sir..... he is obnoxious, loud, and just flat out ######ed. Hey, that means that he is exactly like Jar-Jar Binks.
