Michael Turner vs 08 RB Class (1 Viewer)

wasnt the point of this question to see where he would get drafted if he was coming out of college this year? if i remember, he wasnt that hyped of a RB. hes bulked up alot since college. its easy to say he would be taken after mcfadden and ahead of everyone else NOW, after weve seen what he can do. but to say he was that highly regarded before coming to the pros is a bit of an overstatement.

or maybe i just misread the OP's original question...

You may be right; I think I misunderstood it. I took it to mean where would MT (with NFL resume) fit in with the new RB crop. Could we get an OP clarification?

Turner, who I absolutely think is going to make a great starting RB costs more than a rookie RB will. This can be seen as a positive or a negative. I think it is a good thing if you are a Turner owner as he will go to the highest bidder and will instantly be RB 1 on the depth chart to start the 2008 season.
I see the money angle...but I would rather spend a little more money and have some piece of mind in my product than roll the dice.I've been holding him on my roster all year and plan on using him as one of my 2 keepers next year...just crossing my fingers that he goes somewhere that he can produce.
wow, pretty thin if you need to hold onto Turner as 1 of only 2 keepers.... but I digress. What makes us think Turner doesn't get franchised?

Heck, SD turned down a 1st rd pick from TENN last year so this guy could keep the bench warm. But lets give up a 2nd rounder mid season for a WR. Brilliant.
Because I doubt SD feels they should pay 2 RBs top pay (Franchise players are offered the average of the top five players at their position). I'm sure they have other ways to spend their money.
I still think they were foolish to not take the draft pick for him last year. Is Turner really going to make that much of an impact this year?Imagine if they took the draft pick for Turner, drafted the best WR on the board in TENN's spot... Dwayne Bowe, then they use their own pick on a needed LB like Poslusney instead of reaching for an average WR, then they don't need a panic trade midseason for Chambers.

Turner, Davis and Chambers..... or Bowe, Poslusney, and their 2008 2nd

They blew it. Now in '08 it turns into a pumkin:

Davis and Chambers...... coulda had Bowe, Pos and a 2nd
Woulda coulda shoulda. You can go back and look at any team's draft in any year and second guess their picks.

San Diego is a Super Bowl contender right now. Turner is a valuable asset who could shoulder the load in the event of an injury to the starting RB. Since starting RBs get hurt pretty often in the NFL, I don't think it's ridiculous to put a premium on a competent backup. The season isn't over. Maybe LT will shred his knee in week 13 and Turner will lead the Chargers to a title. Unlikely, but if you're going to emphasize the downside of keeping Turner then you also have to acknowledge the upside.
Sure Turner is a valuable asset this year. That's a no brainer. However, keeping Turner as a top 5 rb next year (meaning it will cost them top 5 $$$) if they franchise him, vs LT's value, makes it another no brainer that they can't afford him in 2008. It comes down to an insurance policy this year vs getting nothing next year.

OP here.I was basically asking how the Turner of today stacks up with this year's draft class.Gaging his worth vs 08 draft picks in dynasty format.

Now imagine reality; SD had Buster Davis as one of the highest WR's on their board and would have drafted Davis with the TEN pick. SD had Weddle rated as a 1st round S so they would have drafted him with their own 1st.They still got the same two players AND have Turner for depth AND have Chambers to boot.

Completely hypothetical quetion here, but....

If Turner was in the 08 class where would he rank?

My guess

1. McFadden

2. Turner

3. Mendenhall

4. Slaton

What do ya'll think?
1) Darren McFadden2) Steve Slaton

3) Michael Turner - Current NFL RB of course

4) Jonathan Stewart

5) Rashard Mendenhall

6) Felix Jones

7) Tashard Choice

8) Ray Rice

9) Chris Johnson

10) Mike Hart

11) Jamaal Charles

12) Allen Patrick

13) James Davis

14) Ryan Torain

15) Rafael Little

Edit to update my ranking
I'm curious where Caddy and Cedric Benson would rank on that list just coming out of college? Point being, we don't know how any of these college guys will look in the pro's... but we know how Turner looks against NFL defenses.

We "knew" how Caddy looked against NFL defenses after his first 3 games in the NFL, alot of good that did us. Turner has done his damage as a part time back behind a very good o-line. I will take my chances on a 22 year old first round talent rather than a 26 year old 5th round pick who has only had success in the NFL with part time duty.Disclaimer: Things could change pendning where Turner and the rookies go.

Turner has started before and had great success if I remember correctly. It might have been one or two games, I don't recall but I'm sure someone has the stats handy. The point is, Turner is a rare combination of size and speed. He's a bull. I absolutely cannot wait to see him unleashed in a full time role next season. He will be the steal of fantasy drafts and win many owners a title next year if people sleep on him.

Not to mention the fact that after last year they had no holes to speak of. No one was trashing them horrendously for keeping Turner, because although the draft picks were nice to have, they didn't out-weigh the biggest percieved weakness of Tomlinson getting injured. This year there looks to be holes, they will spend their money elsewhere.
