Michael Turner (1 Viewer)

I traded LT and Dunn (DOH!) last year for Priest and LJ. Dynasty League.

I also have M. Turner. I have been waiting 2 years for something to happen to LT

because of his workload. He's a lot more durable than I thought...STILL WAITING for Turner

to get his shot though. If not, free agent next year I think.

 
Two big differences between LJ last year and Turner this year:

1) LJ was behind an older RB who had a high liklihood of not making it through the season. LT isn't any more likely than anyone else to suffer a major injury this year.

2) The Chiefs OL was expected to produce a top fantasy back no matter who the starter is. The Chargers OL is middle of the road at best and the RB doesn't get an advantage running behind it.

Besides that, I do think Turner is one of the best backups in the league and if he does get to start because of injury he should do fine, just not LJ's level of production.

 
You could have said the exact same thing last summer about Tomlinson's touches and Turner. By week 7 or 8 when Tomlinson is still healthy you'll be looking for the next best thing on the waiver wire so you can drop Turner.

It has less to do with the players themselves and more to do with the situation. There was a pretty good chance that LJ was going to play last year, whereas there is a pretty low chance that Turner will see any significant PT this year.If LJ were backing up LT headed into last year rather than Priest, he wouldn't have been a 5th rounder.
 
I say this, as a HUGE LT fan... but I've been saying all offseason that his production should dip a bit this year, barring injury. His carries have been very high since his rookie year. He can keep this pace for awhile longer, but eventually he'll wear down. With as promising as Turner has been, I can only see a little bit of an increased role for him this year. Blowouts, of course. But a change-of-pace back, too. I can see LT getting maybe 300-325 touches this year, and Turner getting a fair amount in there.

I think the Chargers view Turner as excellent trade bait, assuming LT doesn't get hurt this year. They can't keep Turner there forever, as he'll want to get a crack at starting SOMEWHERE, as soon as his contract is up (which is soon). I can see the Chargers trying to get some good value out of him while they can, and want to give him some PT to show other teams that he really is the Real Deal...

 
If LT gets hurt, Sproles gets some time. Not sure how much, not saying Turner won't get the bulk of the carries but he gets some.

LT gets an enormous amount of touches. I'm not sure most starting NFL backs could handle that many never mind Turner who has never done that in the NFL.

Ok, in today's NFL, you have morons like TO, Koren Robinson, Ricky Williams, and Benson, etc.. who act like idiots and think the NFL owes them something. Then you have a guy like Turner, who when given the chance looks like the next Stud RB. Yes, I own him and yes I am biased, but tell me, if he was a free agent, wouldn't he be ranked higher than any rookie coming out of the draft. I mean, we have seen what he can do in the NFl. The guy looks awesome.

Granted his playing time has been minimal, but how come this guy seems fine to wait for his opportunity and isn't complaining about being traded, especially in today's times. Isn't it possible Turner could be getting huge $$$, and yet is resigned to be a backup. I understand why SD isn't playing him, they have LT, but I never read anything about Turner wanting out or an opportunity to play full time somewhere else. Isn't the window for NFL RB 3-5 years and he is wasting them away as a backup....

Is this a sign of someone who actually sticks to their contract or someone who if was the #1 guy would fail miserably......

 
I too subscribe to your theory. I may be biased too (Chargers season ticket holder) but I think he could do well if he were on another team. I was actually excited to hear that the Jets were interested in trading for him a few weeks ago. I thought it would be a good thing because he is a good guy and would get a chance to play all the time and plus the Chargers would get something nice in a trade. When Sproles went down and is out for the season I was scared the Chargers would still offer the trade. With Sproles healthy i thought this was a good trade. Now that he is on IR as a SD fan I want Turner to stay right where he is.

 
We will be talking about him as a Top 15 back this time next year.

He's a RFA after this year, and I'm not sure of the SD cap situation, but they could match any offer. However, I agree with you for sure that he will be on another team in 2008 (UFA at the end of 2007).

At the very least he'll get a 1st round tender. Maybe that will be worth it to someone, but I don't see him leaving SD next year.
 
In a recent dynasty draft, we got LT2... gave him a 4 year contract... then took Turner, and gave him a 5 year contract. This is like Lamont Jordan II, but better. After 2007, Turner goes elsewhere, and wil be a stud. Maybe an uber-stud.

It's tough to say what will happen with Turner. The Chargers will make him a tender offer next year such that, if another team wants him, they will have to part with at least one (maybe two) first-rounders. And if a team wants him that bad, the Chargers would probably let him go. The Chargers would also listen to offers for a sign-and-trade deal.

If he remains a Charger in 2007, he'll go to the highest bidder the following year, which will not be the Chargers (unless LT has a career-ending injury).

Please enlighten me as how a team can get two 1st rounders for a RFA?... I know of the 2M$ tender offer that equate to a 1st and a 3rd rounder w/ first right of refusal... but never heard of multi-1st round picks...TIAThe market for young RBs is low (alot of new faces coming into the league the last 3 years) but I'm certain a team will offer Turner at least 2M$ at the end of the year... and I would think the Chargers let him go for a 1st and a 3rd... thus - I'm with LHUCKS on this one - Turner will be starting for a team in '07...My 2 cents

Sorry, I meant two picks (first and third), not two first-rounders.

I agree with JayMan. The only thing that throws a wrench into the works for Turner starting elsewhere in '07 is an injury to Tomlinson and some uncertainty with regard to Tomlinsons health in '07.

I think the only way they could have gotten more would have been to trade him after the 2004 season -- which would have been the correct move in hindsight, but it's hard to criticize them too much for keeping him around for another year.It's unfortunate that he hurt his shoulder; otherwise they could have franchized-and-traded him. But with his injury, franchizing him became a poor option.

How?How much would you be willing to give up for the privilege to overpay a guy with questionable health? In retrospect based on who SD signed as FA's I wish SD would have overpayed him.... but they wouldn't have had to give up any draft picks to do it. They have used some of that $ to extend contracts on key players but if your biggest acquistion is McCree you may as well just have two very good QB's on your roster for insurance.

Even without the injury his '05 performence doesn't justify his current contract. He'd still be overpayed based on his play last season.His '04 performence did justify his '05 contract though.

The Olivea resigning was the one I had in mind. That's a big one. So were Hardwick and Kaeding imo. Haven't seen any figures on Jammer but I sure hope they didn't overpay.Of course Cooper/Wilhelm could prove to be big too if Edwards is traded as the latest "will they/won't they" report came out today. I'm still holding out hope Dobbins ends the season better than either of them. Are you still just as high on Wilhelm? What are your thoughts on Dobbins at this point... if they've changed recently?

Phillips certainly makes sense since Foley can't hang around forever. Olivea hasn't been extended yet. Hardwick, Eric Parker, and Jammer have been extended this offseason. (And Kaeding? I don't remember.) Last season was Jamal, LT, Gates, and Scifres. They still need to to Olivea, Dielman, Cooper, Wilhelm, Phillips . . . and Kaeding if they haven't already.Dobbins has looked good so far, but I'd like to lock up both Wilhelm and Cooper as well. You need LB depth to play a 3-4, and they all look like good players.

He's probably the backup most deserving of a starting position in the entire NFL. I agree, his talent speaks for itself even with so few carries. He has everything, strength, balance, quickness, good vision, breakaway speed, and he's fighting on every play for more yardage. Do you guys think he'd be ranked as high as LT if he was the starter in SD? It would be tough to do that, but OTOH I'd have a hard time justifying keeping him out of the top 5.

 
I plucked Turner late because I think LT is going down this season.

If not I will trade him to the LT owner after LT gets a little dinged.

Agree that he is the backup most deserving a starting gig (along w/ MB3). I had Turner going to the Cowboys in the 1st round in my mock that year and although JJones was a good pick for them, I was incredulous that Turner fell so far.

SD's going to figure that they're in the catbird's seat too, so they'll hold up any team trying to get him figuring that at worst they'll have one more year with a sensational backup to determine whether they want to keep him long term. If I was in their front office I'd give serious consideration after 2007 to keeping Turner and trading LT given that good RB's tend not to fare well after 6 or 7 years of heavy usage.
 
If Turner's available in a dynasty rookie/FA draft, where would you rank him amongst this years top rookie rb's of Bush, Maroney, Williams, White, Addai, etc?

:goodposting: But, is AJ smart enough to do that? In any case, I still firmly believe turner has Uber stud potential after 2007.... meaning 2008. Either he;s the main man in SD, or the main man elsewhere. 5 year contract baby.... maybe the best dynatsy move I've even made.... but only time or injury will tell.

San Diego is LT's town, he ain't going nowhere. WIth no NBA team, and no must see All Stars wearing a Padre uni, LT is the face of SD sports. And as good as Turner has looked, he's not even in LaDainian's league. Hopefully the Chargers get a 2nd for Turner in the offseason and use it to draft a MLB behind Wilhelm or a DT to back up Jamal.

A: 63 carries for 392 yards (6.0 average), and 3 TD's.

Q: What were Jesse Chatman's rushing stats in this offense the year before he got fat and got cut?

And where is Jesse now? NFL.com doesn't even have him in the player index anymore.

Is Turner Lamont Jordan II, or Jesse Chatman II? Sorry, but I'm not buying the whole guaranteed stud once he's a FA bit quite yet....

 
And another question - if he's such a hot commodity in the NFL, why is it that I never hear his name on the list when teams are looking to get a RB? There were rumors of people trying to trade for Lamont Jordan before he got his FA chance. There were plenty of teams in the market for a RB trade this offseason, and several that actually came to pass (Duckett, Bennett, Barlow, almost Suggs) - I never heard his name mentioned in any of these rumors.

Atlanta is asking a lot for Schaub, so he's not very tradable, but we hear every offseason about how teams always ask about trading for him. So I'm not guessing it's because teams are all begging San Diego for him and they are asking too much...

So, how does this all mesh with the Michael Turner is invariably going to get his shot at a starting job when he's a FA theory?

Because SD isn't taking less than a 1st. Every man you listed was available for mid-round picks....all offseason. And only now and only due to a Portis injury and Martin likely retirement were these guys dealt.If Turner was available for a mid-round pick like the guys you listed, he would of been dealt yesterday.
