Mid-Season Strategy (1 Viewer)

I hope it's ok for this forum. It's a general strategy discussion but if it's too close to "Assistant Coach" please move...

My league just started allowing trading 2008 picks for players this year. Basically I could give up a pick as agreed upon by the owners in the deal in exchange for a player's services this season.

The thing I'm nervous about is a sudden desire for the bottom half of the league running at Week 9 into a fire sale trying to unload all their talent for as many picks and high picks in '08 as possible.

I'm not sure really how to combat this. I don't want it to turn into a 6 team league in Week 9.

Also, I feel pressured to go trade for guys. If two guys in contention go scoop up players you are forced to. I need to balance this so 2008 is not jeopardized. Anyone else have similar circumstances?

Is this a keeper league?

If so, remember that picks are less valuable than in redrafts. I know this seems blindingly obvious, but you'd be amazed how many people forget that a first round pick in a league where everyone keeps three is not worth the same as it is in a redraft. You can get good value for your picks if you find an owner who forgets about this.

Put limits on the number of picks (maybe 1 or 2) that a team can acquire. Once they've acquire the picks then they can't trade any more.

Sorry, can you elaborate on this? We can keep one player per year and you give up the pick in the round he was drafted. ex. Marion Barber drafted 5th rd in 2007. If you want to keep him you give up your 5th in '08. So are you saying that picks are less valuable in this format? (this is why I love this site; superior analyzation here compared to other places)Also, I think capping the number of picks is a good idea. Does anyone use a date in which the earliest you can start trading picks at? Say, Week 9 is the earliest you can start planning for the following year? Thanks in advance

In a 12 team keeper league I run that allows trading future draft picks, we have a pay-per-loss system.Six teams make the playoffs. After week 10, the following year's draft rotation is set in a preliminary fashion based on worst to first in the standings. The final rotation is determined based on the final standings. In other words, the 6 teams that make the playoffs are reshuffled based on their final finish. This cuts down on teams completely selling out for next year, because after Week 10 their final standings for the following year are already set. Plus paying for each loss makes everyone fight to stay competitive anyway.
