Mike and the Mad Dog show (Not Done!) (2 Viewers)

Wasn't a huge fan at all but am actually really happy to hear he is coming back.

I dont mind Kay but I missed the pope
Mike Francesa is very much like the latter seasons of the Sopranos for me.  When the show first aired, I wasn't mature enough to appreciate the genius of all of the characters, plots, dialogue etc. that really got emphasized in lieu of violence as the show progressed.  It wasn't until a few years after the show ended when the idea of viewing the show as a quasi-comedy was brought up to me.  When I rewatched it the second time, I got it.  It's since gotten better and better for me as the years have worn on.

Growing up, I hated Francesa.  My dad would always listen to Mike and the Mad Dog and I would just get frustrated with the arrogance and well, Mike.

It was only in the last 5 years or so that I learned to view Mike for exactly what he is - the final seasons of the Sopranos; so often misunderstood and thought to be disappointing, but there's pure genius if you open your mind to it.

I hope his 52 day retirement will motivate you to appreciate Mike in a new light - as the giant, egotistical, sports-tawkin cartoon caricature that he is.

You would think there would be a shred of humility, but the Pope genuflects to none.  Perfect that A-Roid is his first guest.  And, of course, he was instrumental in Jay Wright's success...

"It's nice to be back," Francesa said at the start of his show. "A little surprising to be back. In case you might have seen a little notice about it in the last couple of days, I am back. We'll get into all that. I'm sure some of you, as you call and go through the day, might have a couple of questions. If you do, we'll answer them then. I'm not going to sit here and give you a litany of what happened because some of it is none of your business, and the rest of it, well, I'll tell you it as we go along. But I want to thank everyone for all the kind thoughts and wishes that came from every corner. It was overwhelming, all the nice messages and warm greetings that were sent my way."

ETA- The article also mention he'll be doing Mike's Football Sunday, but it will only be on the app.and website.

can't wait 'til Friday's prognosticating:

"as you awl kno, Bill and I were pawrtnuhs on a few hawses up dare at da Spa ...folks, i gotta tell ya, this Derby is ovah and dun - i have nevah seen an animal move like dis Justify"

effectively mushing a million tickets

:deadhorse:

He claims Facebook, Twitter, Instagram accounts are to promote the app and he will not personally participate at all. Also said a main reason for coming back to radio was to drive traffic to his app, which will be a subscription.

Because I relate everything to gambling, has anyone just straight up faded dis dude on his picks?  (NFL, right?  Does he pick anything else?)  I'd think that would be a gold-mine.  But maybe he's actually like most of us and can pick 45% winners consistently? :)

:lmao: FFS. Karl Malone should sue for copyright infringement.

I used to listen to Mike and the Mad dog back in the day but haven't listened to sports radio in years.

To show how short Mike's retirement was, I didn't even know it happened and he's back already. I actually only found out by listening to Howard.

That's part of the irony.  For someone who is so narcissistic and to need to aplomb of everyone, and is SO much smahtah than anyone, he couldn't have mapped out at least 6 months (and really a year) of doing some other ####, then to make an actual big splash with his return?

I mean, who cares (other than those who suck at his teat, already)

Dog was on the SI Media podcast last week and it came up that somehow now Mike owns the rights to Mike and the Mad Dog (I guess the name for licensing and all the content?).  Russo claimed his people are "aware" and "looking into it".  Seemed more like he was totally clueless than just trying to be coy, but it definitely seems like Mike grabbed that as part of this return to WFAN (?) without consulting Dog at all.

I think RN is getting discussion on Boomer & Gio this morning. A lot of support for RN.
I was following this a bit last night. Hate on WFAN/Entercom all you want for not taking free publicity when you are giving it up, even if is copyrighted material that RN has no rights to (similar to the ongoing MLB highlights debate), but I think it's a bit much to be going after the schmuck who literally had to file the notice to take it down. He's not making that call on his own, and if it's not his bosses making him do it, it's probably Mike himself.

Free Awr Enn!!

(I do agree with RUSF18's point thought - a grievance to be taken to a higher level IMO.

Personally I'd love to hear callers end their calls to Mike with "Free Funhouse" to support gb.

Mike app is here!  $8.99 per month????  no thx!!!

NY Post

Mike Francesa, a millionaire many times over, is asking his most loyal fans to trust him with their credit-card information and deduct $8.99 each month or $98.99 for the year for his laughably overpriced app.

He wants people to fork over their money mostly for shows they receive for free nearly 18 hours a week on WFAN.

In the history of bad media ideas, this is not the worst, but it might end up in the conversation.

What will you get? There will be an exclusive Sunday morning NFL program and a new Saturday college football program. You will also be able to view Francesa doing his free radio show. Plus, he said he will react to breaking news. The wallets he is reaching for are those of his most crazed fans. Maybe he will save his gambling picks for the app, for people who want to lose even more money.

To borrow his phraseology, only a fool would sign up for this deal. But make no mistake about it, Francesa thinks you are out there.

He decided on this price, sources told The Post. No one else — not even Entercom, FAN’s parent company, or CAA, which are minority partners — had a say. Francesa did not return a text seeking comment.

According to sources, Friday’s rollout is the first of potentially two phases of the app.

Phase 1 features just Francesa, though he is not really offering that much. The video of his free radio show, for example, is a kind of a nothingburger. Simulcasts work on TV, not on mobile. Do you have time to stare at Francesa on a phone or iPad for nearly 20 hours a week?

Francesa also is promising to break in on the app, after something happens — like, for instance the Urban Meyer fiasco on Wednesday. Most of us can wait to hear his opinions because it isn’t 1994 anymore, and takes are everywhere.

At 64, off “retirement,” does Francesa really want to be on call 24/7? Also, what happens to the app during next summer’s sabbatical? When football season ends, what do you get? It would be hard to pluck down $98.99 for the year without knowing these answers.

The Saturday and Sunday shows are exclusive to the app, but he will have already talked about those subjects for free all week. What type of guests, if any, will Francesa be able to pull when his audience, even if successful, will be severely limited?

Meanwhile, Phase 2 of the app — if it ever happens — could be a sort of Francesa and Friends, according to sources. Francesa could expand to have other voices on the service.

The idea of a Francesa app maybe could work in some form. To make more than a million bucks in revenue at $8.99, he needs just 10,000 people to sign up. It doesn’t sound that improbable, except when you realize he is barely offering anything not already free. It is kind of nuts.

Some serious sticker shock when that popped up. I don't think people would have paid $1.99/month for that.
I actually thought it was going to be free!  I mean the main show is free....twitter is free....so for $9 per month you get the Sun am show and video stream on a phone?  Boy he got bad advice and whiffed on this one.....

better idea would have been free app....build audience...then when he's off WFAN try to sell a monthly for maybe $4 per month....I mean my entire sirius stream is only a few bucks more than that

Francesa said something about it being a pay app back when he first announced it...only reason I expected it to have any price.

My favorite one of these was...

Amazon Prime: $99/year

Francesa app: $98/year

Damn the Athletic is only like 4 bucks a month and they put out like 3000 articles a day. That’s an insane price.

complete and utter whiff.....he showed his age here....or is listening to real bad advice....
It's ridiculous, and I probably wouldn't even bother to download it if it was free. As if there wasn't enough football coverage on radio and TV on Sunday mornings as is - who cares about his "analysis" of the games or better yet his terrible picks.

He would have made more money doing it all for free and incorporating standard podcast-style ad reads with referral codes.

I mean, the bolded might be worth $100/year

This was the most interesting part of the rollout. Francesa said he plans to do shows right up to and immediately after select big games, as well as potentially create a second screen experience where fans can watch him watch a game and offer commentary throughout.

Francesa solo as a second screen will get old. But Francesa with others? That sounds a lot better, and the possibilities are endless.

I don’t know if there’s a dollar amount too high to watch, say, the Super Bowl with Francesa and Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo on a second screen. Francesa and A-Rod? Francesa and Sour Shoes watching a game? Francesa and Craig Carton? Make it happen.

Exclusive content includes;

-Watch Mike negotiate with the Coca Cola delivery man, as he seeks a lower price on Diet Coke delivery.

-Tune it at 2a after Yankee playoff game to catch Mike’s App simulcasting Jawja Roddy at the podium.

-Saturday at 7a hot take on Mike’s generalizations of that day’s big college games.  “The kid at that program is gonna make 1 or 2 big plays”!

-Exclsuive Bar A content, as Southside Johnnie’s corpse is wheeled on stage.

The funny thing will be when sales are sluggish and Francesa gets bull#### that he is working his ### off for App content and making very little money for all the effort.

the only thing he is really offering is his sunday football show.  i mean, there aren’t enough of those for free, so i’ll pay for his.

to be truthful, i listened to him on sundays as i sat on my porch with my dog, but i haven’t missed those shows since they’ve been away either.
