FOXSports' Jay Glazer reports that the 49ers have decided not to wait for their Week 9 bye to fire Mike Nolan. Nolan is out as head coach effective immediately. The Niners let the news leak out a week before they planned to take action, which would have made the entire week and next Sunday's game against Seattle a circus. Assistant head coach/linebackers Mike Singletary is expected to step in. Nolan took over in '05 with the organization in shambles. He is a good football coach, but didn't get results after a promising 7-9 2006 campaign. His record ended up at 18-37 in four seasons. Nolan is certain to find work in 2009, probably as a defensive coordinator. Source: FOXSports.com

49ers make Nolan latest coaching casualty

by Jay Glazer

In a wild year, yet another head coach has been fired midseason.

FOX Sports has learned that the San Franciseo 49ers have fired Mike Nolan. Nolan was informed by team brass late Monday afternoon.

It is assumed that current defensive coordinator Mike Singletary will assume Nolan's coaching duties. There were reports earlier today that Nolan would be fired after the team's next game Sunday against Seattle, but ownership instead decided not to wait.

Nolan was in the midst of his fourth season in San Francisco and leaves with an 18-37 record. The 49ers appeared to have hope after a 7-9 season in 2006, but they sank to 5-11 last season as Nolan and his former franchise quarterback Alex Smith reportedly had a falling out.

I'll be quietly rooting for the Niners going forward.

Samurai Mike's a quality guy and I hope he sees lots of success as a head coach in the NFL.

I hope Singletary tells martz he better use Gore correctly. Nolan was too big a #### to do that.

I'm Samurai Mike I stop'em cold.

Part of the defense, big and bold,

I've been jammin' for quite a while,

Doin' what's right and settin' the style,

Give me a chance, I'll rock you good,

Nobody messin' in my neighborhood.

I didn't come here lookin' for trouble,

I just came to do The Super Bowl Shuffle

:goodposting: Beat me to it.

Singletary is a helluva coach and a strong personality. He has the respect of the locker room for sure.
How so? He played linebacker and coached linebackers. This is the same guy that got turned down for the Baylor University head coaching position in 2002 and several NFL head coaching positions since. I think it remains to be seen. He certainly doesn't have alot of coaching experience. I think it's probably just that he wasn't Mike Martz. If Martz were coach, it would be that he ran Nolan out of town and a big mess. IIRC Nolan hired Singletary(or pushed for them to hire him) in Baltimore so there's some continuity with Singletary.

There's 3 Mike's here. Predictions on someone misunderstanding a post in this thread?

Suprised that MArtz didnt get the gig. That would have to piss him off.
Martz is too big a name; he is probably viewed as a threat by the Yorks. Hiring a guy for his first big coaching job, they can blame it on him when they continue to make moves that undermine the success of the team.I missed by a bit; I had predicted they would fire Nolan and put in Martz when they went 2-6, and instead they fired Nolan and put in Singletary when they went 2-5. I should have guessed that they wouldn't go with Martz.

:goodposting: The only thing we know is that he is well-liked, and good for a sound bite at the Senior Bowl.
Yep. I really like Singletary, and have been happy to have him on staff. But the Defense plays sloppy as hell. Nolan gets the ultimate blame for it, but what is Mike's role in it? Has Nolan been holding him back from really motivating those players, or has Singletary been equally at fault. This is the ONLY thing to support about a midseason firing. It gives the idiot York a chance to see what Singletary can do. I'm hoping this is the start of a HOF coach, but I have no faith in York's ability to help him bring it out.

Nope.Martz was told this offseason during OC negotiations that Singletary was getting the gig if it happened.

Good to see Singletary get his shot, although I secretly wanted him to replace Lovie Smith as da Bears' HC. That would be so f r i c k i n' awesome.

What's ridiculous about the NFL (and trust me, Goodell has done yeoman's work thus far) is that they are so concerned about diluting the brand, yet on all three of the coaches this far, the teams leaked the situation to the media before the coach is actually fired. That to me is more classless than any touchdown dance that deserves a fine or any player criticizing an official.

I know you can't fine teams for media rumors, but what Davis did to Kiffin, the Rams did to Linehan, and what the 49ers did to Nolan is insulting.

Just fire the guys and move on. These guys have families too.

Mike was a front runner for the Atlanta job before Petrino, but then never got any serious consideration after Petrino crawled away. I don't know if it's because they didn't want him, or he didn't want to be here.

I can't make myself actually root for the 9ers, I still have left over hatred from our NFC West days of abuse at their hands, but it's hard not to hope Singletary does well.

:confetti: is right. Nolan just wasn't getting it done. Things could start looking up in SF.

and yet Herm Edwards still has a job.... :banned:

I don't see why every believes that Martz thinks he deserves the coaching job; he's been with the organization for less than a year and was hired for his acumen on the offensive side of the ball.

thread should be called: Mike Nolan officially fired, Mike Martz Offically pissed.
Mike Singletary Officially On The Hot Seat
Gore owners rejoice. This thing is going to be different after the bye.
Wasn't Gore leading the league in total yards up to this point? I think he was 4th in fantasy scoring for RBs after last week. Weren't they already rejoicing? Or is he now going to get even better?

Nolan was the GM til this season.

IMO Nolan hinged too much on the Alex Smith pick working out. There would be an enormous list if we listed everyone that thought Alex would be a good QB. I'm not calling the guy a fool and I'm not solely blaming Alex for Nolan being fired(mike could have made moves for other QBs)....that said, how much of this is on Alex Smith not panning out?

Do you like the team Nolan has assembled?

You can tell by my screename how I feel about the situation. Mike Ditka hit the nail on the head when he said they needed new ownership. The Yorks inherited the team and have proceeded to destroy what was once a storied franchise.I wish Singletary success but as long as the Yorks are around it'll be difficult. I think Singletary has the ability to bring the much needed leadership this team needs, not to mention the search for a franchise QB. What they have now won't get it done and Gore's career will be over before they get it straightened out. Pity. They do have some young talent and hopefully they'll recognize who those guys are and keep them around. Hope they really work with Josh Morgan. Also at wit's end with the enigma Vernon Davis. Geez, the #7 overall pick and ain't done squat. This whole team needs a lot of rework and Singletary can be the guy to do it if he gets the cooperation of the Yorks. The Yorks said they're tired of losing. Losing what, games or money. Excise the Yorks from this franchise and there's a chance they could eventually become a winning team again.

That is up to Singletary. There were times in previous games that Gore was ignored in the 2nd half when he should have been given the ball. I beleive they blew one of those games because the madman wanted to throw every down. Singletary needs to lay down the law with Martz. I see him gone after this year anyway. For all the yards he racks up, he sure can wrack up INT's, sacks and losses. He doesn't know anyother way. Does he even have a clue what a slant pattern is?

Hold the phone. What are talking about here? I read "Gore owners rejoice". Is this about Gore's fantasy stats, or is it about what's best for the 49ers as a team?Gore has been a top producer so far. Is this really debatable? Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what was meant by "Gore owners rejoice". Is the expectation that he should have been doing better than the #4 RB so far in fantasy points? What am I not understanding here?

Anyone think this move will have a positive effect on Vernon Davis? I'm about ready to dump the guy in a dynasty league...

It's almost unfortunate how much they love his blocking ability. Almost makes you have to root for them to get a great T or somesuch.I would trade him away as I have a real hard time predicting things once that happens. Shockey, latter part, in NY is a decent example.
