Mike Wallace to be Tendered, not tagged (1 Viewer)

...how its a win/win, the steelers can't lose, its a great move and the Steelers hold all the cards, etc.
Not for nothin', but no one has claimed this anywhere in this thread....other than maybe you every time you're assigning it to someone else. What most people who pay attention to the Steelers have been saying is that the Steelers control the outcome: They will have an opportunity to match any offer Wallace receives. If they choose not to, there will at least be some level of consolation rather than none if he were an untagged UFA.

Unless I blinked on re-read, no one has claimed it was "a great move", no one has claimed it was "a win/win(quite the opposite actually and more than once) and no one has claimed it was "genius."
:goodposting:
Genius move according to this guy. Nevermind the fact that RFAs cannot sign until tomorrow.

Bleacher Report is so awesome.OY.

Who was the last player tendered at the first round level to sign with another team?
I remember reading it hasn't happened in 10 years. The closest that comes to mind is Joey Galloway was franchised and i believe Jerry Jones ponied up 2 firsts and a contract.

Keep in mind that the new CBA changed the tenders. There use to be a 1st and a 3rd rounder. Now just a 1st
Yep.Wallace may be in play even at the first and third round level.I'm still betting against teams making a move on him, but he's the first legitimate RFA case to test the new CBA rules. It's a definite possibility.

Teams normally franchise or extend the contracts of their best players. It's rare that a team would only give a top tender that's way below market value.

Agreed.Wallace's situation is pretty unique. Pitt kind of screwed the pooch right up front in offering 3 year deals to their rookie classes. Same situation with Antonio Brown. If a team makes Wallace an offer, any draft pick that come back the Steelers is definitely a booby prize. Better than nothing, but not the best outcome.

The March 17 RFA date is bogus.http://www.nesn.com/.m/2012/03/mike-wallace-brian-hoyer-among-restricted-free-agents-bound-by-tricky-rules.html
I don't know if we should be trusting what he has "heard from an NFL guy". He later said that the Pats would need to give up the Saints pick at 27 instead of their own if they sign Wallace, citing the rule of giving up your own pick or better if you sign an RFA. But I believe that language is only in there so that if you have traded your pick already, you can still be active in the market as long as you have or can acquire a 1st rounder. Can anyone tell me if that's wrong?

Could be wrong but I believe that acquired pick has to be higher than their original pick.

The language in the CBA requires "a first round draft pick" be given. Later, it says "Any Club that does not have available, in the upcoming Draft, the selection choice or choices (its own or better choices in the applicable rounds) needed to provide Draft Choice Compensation ...may not sign an Offer Sheet in such circumstances." CBA I don't read that as requiring your highest available choice in a round to be given. I would read it to allow a team to use an acquired pick as long as that pick is at least as high as their original pick would have been.As for the March 17 date, here's what the NFL says:

Q. What is the time period for free agency signings this year? A. For restricted free agents, from March 13 to April 20. For unrestricted free agents who have received the June 1 tender from their prior Club, from March 13 to July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). For franchise players, from March 13 until the Tuesday following the 10th week of the regular season, November 13. If a franchise player does not sign by November 13, he must sit out the season. There are no transition player designations this year.

I don't expect Wallace to sign anytime soon since it's in the best interest of the signing team to wait as long as possible for the Steelers to use their cap room.

Except for the Steelers being in negotiations with Wallace. Derp. ;)
They've had a lot of time to negotiate with him but now they think he's going to sign before getting offers from other teams?
They are NEGOTIATING... you do understand how that works, yes? If you answered yes, then you must understand that for another team to "wait as long as possible" would be a detriment in wanting to acquire Wallace. The Steelers only have 7 days to match if you you reach an agreement with Wallace. But they may reach a much easier contract agreement while another teams "waits".

Wallace would be an idiot to sign with the Steelers before waiting for offers from other teams. The Steelers had plenty of time to get him signed to a long-term deal before the free agency period started but they didn't. If the Steelers make an offer now do you think they are going to back out on it if he doesn't sign it immediately? That would be pretty bad business and would ensure that he leaves Pittsburgh.

The Steelers are hoping that Wallace isn't getting any solid offers. That brings the price down. You said for the other suitors to "wait"... which would be what Pittsburgh wants while they are in negotiations.

You really seem to have a bone to pick on this Wallace stuff cstu. You seem a bit off-kilter.

I don't have a dog in the race - not a Steelers fan, nor of their rivals and I don't own Wallace. I'm just thinking like Wallace and other teams would. All the teams interested in Wallace are biding their time to see if the Steelers use up more of their cap. There's a risk for Wallace since that would mean less money for the Steelers to offer him, but I believe he is being told to be patient and that there are multiple teams who are going to make him offers better than the Steelers.

They are trying to sign Tolbert.
I don't get that AT ALL. Why? They have 6 RBs on the roster currently, and have VERY little cap room. Why sign Tolbert at $3M a year (Hillis deal), leaving them with only $5M for rookies AND to protect themselves against an offer to Wallace?
My other guess is that they don't like their other RB's and don't think they can keep Wallace. Either that or they've decided they're happy with getting a 1st out of Wallace. This is the same team that traded Santonio Holmes for a 5th so they don't exactly put a premium on WR.

I was the first one to even post the Steelers were interested in Tolbert on these forums. But that doesn't change much at all in regards to how they handle free agency.

Tolbert will be a relatively cheap option at a cheap position, or he wont be a Steeler. That's business as usual.

*His biggest draw towards Pittsburgh is them telling him, he will be given a shot to win the starting job. Not $$$.

Wait, you just equated "getting Tolbert" with it being linked to "not keeping Wallace" as if one precludes the other? That is simply incorrect.

That is simply incorrect.
Please explain to me how it's incorrect (I honestly don't know why it would be). Last I saw, Pittsburgh has about $8M in cap room. That's needed to sign rookies they draft, any other FAs they sign, and to protect them against an offer made for Wallace (correct so far?). If they sign Tolbert (lets assume $3M first year), that will leave $5M for the remainder. Leave $2M or so for rookies....and they are now down to $3 (plus the ~$3M tender already on Wallace) to "match" an offer Wallace gets from another team, right?Where am I off with my thinking?

For simple starters, they already have 2.7m allocated to Wallace, above and beyond the free cap space.Secondly, they still have several contract options available to them in regards to current players, three that I am keenly aware of.

And they can still rescind four (4) different 1.3m RFA tags.

Don't believe it's ever happened, as the rules for only needing to give up a 1st are very recent.

With the ABSURD money being thrown at very mediocre receivers in free agency, teams that want a legitimate, young, difference maker would be fool's not to consider the Wallace tender right now.

Are there any teams left that will attempt to go after him? Now that NE has Lloyd and SF just signed manningham, the only other team I could see making a move would be the Bengals since they have a ton of money to spend.

Well it sure appears that the two most likely candidates, NE (31) and SF (29) are now off the board. Outside of Pat Kirwan I've seen few NFL guys that believe Wallace will play outside of PIT in 2012.

@AdamSchefter: With SF adding Mario Manningham and Randy Moss, and NE signing Brandon Lloyd, neither side expected to pursue Mike Wallace. Steelers safe.

Difficult situation for Wallace. I would hate for him to get hurt playing for $2.7 M without any long term security ie Javon Walker. At this point he probably should ask the Steelers to give him a larger one year contract with a clause that forbids them from applying the franchise tag next year.

The Texans would be a favorite to sign Wallace if not for their cap situation. However, cutting Jacoby Jones would free up $2.4M this year and if they wanted him enough they could give him a contract with a high amount of guaranteed money.

Yeah, Im sure the Steelers would love to do that

Except they won't be able to because of their cap situation.
This remains to be seen. It is certainly a possibility. Wallace seems to be running out of landing spots for this forthcoming "giant contract that Pittsburgh can't match" though.Next couple days may be interesting.

You may be right about that. The way we've been seeing contracts structured is with a lot of guaranteed money so it may come down to the Steelers not wanting to match rather than being unable to.

WilliamsonNFL: #Bengals or #Broncos (w Manning) are only teams I could see going after M Wallace now, but unlikely
Basically what I was thinking too after the Manningham news. Bengals have the money, but allegedly not the desire(again, just what the "insiders" claim, or at least are blurbing anyway...so we have to take that FWIW). Denver certainly has the money too, but without Manning(or at least a real QB) I can't see any way Wallace would want to sign there.
