None of you defending this seem to realize that the target audience of this girl is from 5-11, simply too young to have to explain this type of behavior.
i DON'T THINK HE MEANT 'SEEING ANOTHER GIRL NAKED". (sorry for caps). I think he meant that an older "role model" is instilling bad values and giving the impression that it's good to show skin if it gives you a competetive advantage. My daughter has a best friend and they do a lot of stuff together and I'm sure they've seen each other naked hundreds of times. They have bathed together and played dress up. I'm not too concerned with my daughter seeing another girl naked...or half naked.Trust me, I'm not repressed, not at all. You won't want your very little kid seeing their favorite actress half naked....at you not being repressed.
that pic you didn't link on that site puts the vanity fair pic to shame. who coaxed her into that one?Sure, because she is so innocent.
Miley #1... kisses.
Miley #2... hugs.
Miley #3... get in my belly.
So, some "professional" photographs did not turn out the way she likes. Ho-hum.

I couldn't have said this any better. This is exactly the sort of lesson I don't want my daughters to learn.

A couple of nice postings tim...because everyone raises their daughters the same way?As a father of four daughters....I think you'll change your mind if you have a daughter. I sincerely wish you luck if you don't.no, but when i do i am not going to raise her to be ashamed of sex or sexuality. I'll try to teach her to be smart about her body, be aware of the situations she puts herself in, and also about actions and their consequences. But, if she happens to be considered beautiful by society, i am not going to make feel ashamed or embarrassed about it. If she chooses to use her beauty to her advantage, she just needs to understand the consequences of those actions. And if she's a troll, i'll just send her to an ivy league schoolI'm guessing you probably don't have a young daughter.HiWelcome to the year 2008. Lets make sure a few things are clear:
Teenagers have LOTS of sex these days
kids aren't held to the same puritanical modesty as previous generations
kids actually have colored bracelets they wear to show off which sex acts they've performed...this has been going on for years
She is showing her shoulder...oooooo, put your corset back on young lady![]()
Go to a local bar/club and check out what most kids wear out these days...if your 20th century virgin eyes can take it
Hollywood is as Hollywood does...that has always been the case, just ask shirley temple

Broad generalizations down? Apples and Oranges but don't let that get in the way of things.I'm sure the people on this thread who are arguing that this is OK are the same ones that a week ago were defending letting your 9 year old ride on a subway alone. I'm betting most of them don't have children and really know very little about the responsibilities of having children.
Exactly. Decide what is important. Do you want your daughter to be wholesome or provocative? You can't have it both ways. Her father manages her, plus...he's her father. The fact that he gave his okay for these pictures tells me that he's pretty-much just her pimp at this point.
It's not, though. I have always rejected arguments like "you don't know unless you've been there, but in this case, it absolutely applies.Broad generalizations down? This is amazing. Whatever happens it's our fault as parents. We're too repressive, we let our kids watch too much TV, LOL!FWIW:I don't let my daughters watch very much TV. (None on school nights unless it's a very special occasion.) Of the very limited amount I do let them watch, Hannah Montana is a good chunk of it. I also let them wear HM clothes, have HM toys and dolls, and listen to her music. Why? Because she is wholesome and talented, her show and persona represents positive attitudes and she has been a good role model. She is someone I like having my kids look up to and emulate. Until now. Now she may have ruined it.Watching television, like everything else, is OK so long as it is done in moderation. I do not need my kids TV shows to teach them values, but I would like to see these reinforced. Is that so wrong?Sounds like a lot of FBG kids are getting their values from the TV...If your TV gives your kids your values you got more problems than worrying about Miley Cyrus taking some pictures in a towel or a bikini or tight pants. You're allowing your tv to influence your children way too much...maybe you should try turning off the tv.

Please don't try to inject any objectivity or intelligence into this thread. We are not here to think, we're here to be ridiculous, excessively vigilant, and feign indignation at the stuff we are forced to let our children watch on TV. Why do you hate the children of our Great Nation?Considering the photographer is Annie Leibovitz, I assume the point of the photo is to raise these very questions about the sexualizing of youth in our culture. The shot is at once both glamorous and almost regretful. It is not in any way overtly celebrating her sexuality, IMO. The fact that it makes us, the viewer, slightly uncomfortable is intentional I would guess. Very compelling work.
I don't want my daughters to think it's OK at age 11 or 12 to be scantily clad. I don't want them attempting to flaunt their sexuality as early teens. I think girls are much more at risk than boys are, because all too many girls are still seen as sexual objects in our society. We recorded star wars on spike for my son to watch. My wife walks in and sees a girls gone wild commercial on. concerned about what he was watching she said this is inappropriate for him to watch. Now whenever it comes on he FF right through it and says this is not appropriate.....Have some of you ever tried talking to your kids or do you just figure if you censor everything you deam inappropriate they will turn out just like you?BTW my son is 5. I have 3 daughters 10, 2 and -0

What hypocrisy and lack of character. Not to take the pics, but to actually have ANY issue with the pics when the parents were ON THE SET and could see the pics as they were taken digitally. Now they don't like the backlash and want to blame and accuse others?Seriously. They should just be fortunate that the pictures are not that provacative and definately not "hot" - otherwise Roger Clemens might have his next fling in his sight.

So if we disagree with your POV we are subjective, stupid, non thinking, ridiculous, excessively vigilant, fake about our anger and too lazy to keep our kids from watching TV. Have I got it right now? The work is artistic, compelling, meant to raise questions....and very very wrong, IMO. If you're going to raise these questions about the sexualizing of youth in our culture, please don't do it with a current icon that my young children idolize. It's hard enough to find worthy role models out there, especially for young girls. Please don't try to inject any objectivity or intelligence into this thread. It's funny how it's always the moral indignation over something that gives it such power. If the Moral Majority didn't raise such a stink, these pictures wouldn't be seen by that many people and would be history within a month. But the fact that people have to raise a fuss puts it out there in front of everyone, including the very kids you don't want to see them. Ironical. If I ever have a daughter, I can tell you right now that she will not be taking pictures like that at age 15. Simply inappropriate for that age.that is provocative to you? she's showing her back.Who gave the Ok for provacative pictures of a 15 year old?
I don't want my daughters to be sexual beings either, but the only way to stop it is to lock them up. I will let them express themselves however they like and will step in when the Ms and I deam appropriate to interfere....but I'm not gonna blame miley cyrus because she wants to wear a skirt I think is too short....or a half cut tank top...I would blame that on bad taste....luckily my daughter has parents with very good taste as role models.I don't want my daughters to think it's OK at age 11 or 12 to be scantily clad. I don't want them attempting to flaunt their sexuality as early teens. Miley Cyrus is 15. Don't you think its possible for he to have believed the pictures were artful when she took them and to now be embarrassed by them? Particularly since so many of her "fans" (as exemplified by some in this thread)are collectively ####ting a brick?Millions of 15 year old girls display the same ambivalence about their sexuality. They are curious on the one hand and petrified on the other. I think it's possible to take both Leibowitz and Cyrus at their words on this. The problem, it seems to me, is with anyone being forced to grow up as a celebrity. Miley's fans want her to exemplify some type of standard of purity that she might not even agree with. And others may want her to exhibit a degree of sexuality that she's also not comfortable with. I'm inclined to do what we should have done with Britney. Which is to decline to pay much attention and let her work it out for herself. What hypocrisy and lack of character. Not to take the pics, but to actually have ANY issue with the pics when the parents were ON THE SET and could see the pics as they were taken digitally. Hypothetically I am saying that if you are worried about what your kids are watching influencing them then it is too much....not that your kid actually watches too much...because it really isn't about how much tv your kid can handle....its about how much before starts effecting their behavior....afterall they're guidance shouldn't be coming from the TV.This is amazing. I don't turn CNN off when my kids are in the room. They'll usually ignore it. But if they hear the name "Miley Cyrus" you can bet they will stop what they're doing and rush to see what's up.I already know I will not prevent my daughters from seeing these photos. They will hear about them from other kids at school (all of my daughters' friends adore Miley, as well) and they will be seen eventually. Then I have to figure out how to explain to my kids about these photos. That's a conversation I really shouldn't have to have; they are too young for it. That's why I'm so upset about this whole matter. And? Do your kids watch CNN?This is everywhere already. It's all over the news.Do your kids read Vanity Fair? This is amazing. Miley nor Annie aren't the problem. It's the parents responsibility to not let Miley take pictures that might embass her - even if she wants to take them at the time. For all the reasons you just described. Moreover, what nobody has mentioned - is the fact that I wouldn't put my daughter in a position to be topless in front of strange adults - much less a well known lesbian. Would you let you little boy be half-naked with a homosexual adult?? The Parents should be kicked in the crotch for not immediately balking at this. 14 year-old crack ho's have daughters too. I hate this particular brand of arrogance. And I've used that line repeatedly for people that express such arrogance. It goes over really well with the PTO types who think spreading their legs for a home in the burbs makes them some kind of child-rearing authority.Thank you, that is all.no, but when i do i am not going to raise her to be ashamed of sex or sexuality. Again, it's important to stress that when it comes to her fans, they are NOT 15. Brittany Spears at her peak had fans that were the same age as she was, or a couple of years younger. On the other hand, Miley Cyrus' fans are 4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10. These kids are too young to be exposed to sexuality. I really don't care what Miley is really like; her public image has to be devoid of sexuality or it doesn't work and is inappropriate for my kids.

Fair enough. But I have a bigger problem with the People magazine cover from last year proclaiming that Miley and Billy Ray were an example of "Raising a Child Star the Right Way." To me, they were pimping her every bit as much then as they would be now. Just in a different way. I don't think a parent should burden a 14 or 15 year old girl with being an "example" for young girls. Teenage girls should be allowed to make mistakes without having to worry about timsochet and his little rugrats.[Miley nor Annie aren't the problem. Here's a thought. You be concerned with what's appropriate for your kids.
