We are supporting Erdowan, not because he was democratically elected (though that gives us rhetoric) but because for us it's the best possible result.

#TurkeyCoup: Key question: Are coup leaders the UK-US backed Gülen movement (https://wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/09ANKARA1722_a.html…) or other actors backed by Russia?

Apparently the coup was masterminded by a Col. Kose who was just sacked.

And it sounds like he and his followers are connected to something called the Gulen Movement.

Is he the guy who imprisons comedians?Erdogan isn't a Saddam or an al-Assad, but he is still way more of an authoritarian dicator-wanna be than ought to be in charge of a country that aspires to be more like a modern European nation than a Middle Eastern basket case.
A buddy of mine loves Instanbul - for the very reasons you mention. Says the people and city are great, wants (or wanted?) to go back....
I've been to over 50 countries and turkey/Istanbul is in my top 5I know people who have gone on those Italy, Greece, turkey cruises and come back raving about turkey more than the other two.
And cheese...don't forget the cheeseCNN is still serving baloney though, right?
I have no idea if this is at all accurate, but the Turkish family we know here who is moderate and hates Erdogan said this was a false coup put on by Erdogan at about 6pm EST tonight.I usually hate conspiracy theories but this whole things reeks of a false flag operation. The Turkish military knows how to launch coups. This weak ### coup is a joke. How do you not shut down the airport? So Erdogan can have his triumphant return and consolidate power even further.
We will be okay... we still have Mr. Ham.will this effect thanksgiving?
Don't forget about the TurduckenWe will be okay... we still have Mr. Ham.
Was wondering the same thing.I have no idea if this is at all accurate, but the Turkish family we know here who is moderate and hates Erdogan said this was a false coup put on by Erdogan at about 6pm EST tonight.
At this point nothing would shock me.
Huh? It's pretty obvious they are trying to kill him.Is he going to shoot himself? If so how would leaving help?
Wherever you go, there you are.
They know exactly where he is and they have jets. If they wanted him dead, he'd be dead already.Huh? It's pretty obvious they are trying to kill him.
Oh. Well if you're sure it is real, I'm convinced.I'm pretty skeptical of conspiracy theories for the purpose of increasing power. There HAVE been some in history (obviously, the Reichstag fire) but this situation sure sounds like it was too big for people to plan it. I'm pretty sure this was real.
Not confirmed, but talk is the hotel Erdogan was staying at was bombed. They know exactly where he is and they have jets. If they wanted him dead, he'd be dead already.
ETA: And if this was a true coup attempt the plotters would face the death penalty if they fail. No reason not to bomb him. Unless they're all on the same side.
Don't know why you find what I wrote amusing. That Erdogan won is the best possible result seems to be the universal consensus from experts, our State Department, the NATO leaders, etc. Erdogan is a pretty bad guy but it sure sounds like the chaos that would have ensued if he had been taken out would have been worse.
Oh. Well if you're sure it is real, I'm convinced.
You don't need to believe me. But if you're going to make such an accusation, you really should have something beyond "this looks awfully suspicious!" Yes. After he left. Not confirmed, but talk is the hotel Erdogan was staying at was bombed.
False flag? Interesting.Reported as a failure. They cleared out and then bombed their own gov't buildings it appears.
-Some citizens there think the Turkish Leader is behind the whole thing to consolidate power.
Right. I mean it could be staged, but that is very speculative at the moment.Yes. After he left.
See Chavez after failed 2002 coup. And you know the coupists were right. If the military coup has in fact failed this is bad, bad news.
Always about Israel with you. They're showing a bunch of guys in Ankara holding hands and dancing around in a circle. Sure looks like a Jewish wedding.
You should read more about dictators. From what I have read about Erdogan he doesn't need more reasons to clamp down. He was already doing it.
If this was some podunk country I'd agree with you. But the Turkish army is legit. If they really wanted to launch a coup it would not look like this.I'm pretty skeptical of conspiracy theories for the purpose of increasing power. There HAVE been some in history (obviously, the Reichstag fire) but this situation sure sounds like it was too big for people to plan it. I'm pretty sure this was real.
Who is this alias? One of my anti-Semitic friends who was banned, perhaps?Always about Israel with you.
Not you too, Saints. Really? You should read more about dictators.
I was just responding to your specific point, don't jump to conclusions. Not you too, Saints. Really?
Yeah, he's not going to be a buddy of ours, is he?Erdogan is blaming Gulen & the US government, says it was a US plot.
Here we go.
Gonna need someone to blame.Yeah, he's not going to be a buddy of ours, is he?
If Turkey is invaded by an outside country, we will defend them. If any other NATO country is attacked by an outside country, we will expect Turkey to send troops to defend it, as we will. How does this impact NATO? You can't have infighting like this and expect us/them to have our/their back.
The problem is, the Turkish military was divided about this. Most of the major players were not a part of this and are loyal to Erdogan. This was not the best of their military, nor did it have much suppor .If this was some podunk country I'd agree with you. But the Turkish army is legit. If they really wanted to launch a coup it would not look like this.
Where did you get this? I found only found 1 person reporting it on Twitter and they were an extremely dubious source.Erdogan is blaming Gulen & the US government, says it was a US plot.
Here we go.
Uh, I didn't make an accusation. You don't need to believe me. But if you're going to make such an accusation, you really should have something beyond "this looks awfully suspicious!"
