Minnesota Vikings Offseason (2007) (1 Viewer)

Peterson scare

Take a deep breath, Viking fans. Adrian Peterson left the field at 10 a.m. and entered a trailer with head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman. But at 10:06, he rejoined his teammates on the sideline, although he looks to have some sort of leg injury. ... Oh, he just went back into the trailer. But I still don't think it's serious.

Peterson limps off field

Rookie running back Adrian Peterson limped off the field because of a left ankle injury this morning during the Vikings’ first practice. He was taken to a medical trailer, but later returned and was moving around, favoring the ankle.

Peterson appeared to be injured after an early drill, and left after a passing drill when he was tackled by Cedric Griffin.

Cornerback Ronyell Whitaker also left the field because of a left leg injury that appeared more serious. We’ll get you an update after practice.

This was my first time ever at training camp even though I've been living in Mankato for 5 years. I was lucky enough to be on the field for practice and Peterson walked right by us both times when he needed medical assistance. He was limping slightly but nothing to make anyone too worried. They stretched him out and he went back on the field. He came back to the trainers area about 5 minutes later and spent some time on the staionary bike. I wouldn't be too worried about anything. Whitaker was carted off the field and definitely looked more serious.

Allison didn't practice this morning, not sure what was up with that.

Tarvaris made a few nice reads and passes but also held onto the ball too long a few times.

Zygi was just walking around on the field in a t-shirt and shorts, very discreet. When the trainers brought out the exercise balls he did some sit-ups which I thought was funny to see a billionaire just doing his thing.

We got a chance to talk to Birk on the field after practice and he was quite loquacious as normal.

Overall it was fun to watch and I think I'll try to make it a few more times.

Other random observations (mostly offense. The defense was on another practice field).- Troy Williamson still can't catch. He clanged one off the facemask early in the day and the above mentioned drop in the end zone he should have had. He did, however, look better in the afternoon.- The offensive line was getting schooled by the d-line. Which is to be expected early in camp.- I may have been wrong about Shiancoe. He's HUGE, but moves well and had more than one nice catch today.- Sidney Rice, if he doesn't make an impact this year, is going to be a stud some day. He certainly looks the part.- They worked a TON on throwing to the backs out of the backfield. I think both Taylor and Peterson are going to have a large # of catches this year.- This team will live and die with Tarvaris this year. He has a nice live arm and while inexperienced, I can not see any way that they roll with Bollenger unless they're planning on drafting a QB next year.- Adrian Peterson is CLEARLY the most electric player on the field. My man-crush on him is SO big, I think I want to have his babies.
Great stuff, by you and the others. I love the camp updates. There is always good info in these. :hot: I am not at all surprised with the comments about AP being the most electric player on the field. I can imagine the buzz there, because we had Barry here and it was a similar feeling. Just wondering what your opinion is regarding how much he plays. I just feel he is so good that once they realize just how good he is, they will HAVE to get him on the field a majority of the time. I can't imagine a talent like him not getting the majority of the work. Thoughts?

I really do think that you'll see both AP and Taylor on the field together for a large number of snaps. It will be reminiscent to the McAllister/Bush situation. However, in the Viking's case, AP will be the McAllister type (20-25 carries per game) and be flashier, but Taylor won't be Reggie Bush.

I am really surprised to hear (see) you say (type) that. I expect it to be the other way around. The coaching staff has made it a point to say that Peterson can catch the ball. I expect to see him as the one who might go split end and be more like Bush. I guess I also feel this way because AP seems faster and Chester is more of an inside runner. I guess what I have expected was 3 and a cloud of dust from Chester, with AP taking screens, and reverses when both are on the field. Maybe I am completely wrong...

I thought so too, but from what I've heard, it was Taylor that they were splitting out more than AP. Chet has great hands too. Hard to get a read since Taylor didn't practice yesterday. It's hard to say at this point. Hopefully they get creative with it and do a combination of ALL that, running AP and Taylor inside/outside.Like I wrote yesterday, they seemed to be practicing throwing to the backs a TON yesterday - I mean A TON. I think they practiced the deep ball for about 5 minutes the whole time I was there.

The more I think about the offensive (in more ways than one) situation facing the Vikings - that is that they have minimal experience and dubious skill at WR - the more it becomes CLEAR that both AP and Chester are going to be used like crazy.

It would not surprise me to see both with over 1000 yards rushing (more likely 1200/800 with the split being AP/CT) and around 40+ catches each.

That's what the WCO was originally devised for - to overcome the talent deficiencies in the WR corps.

any news on how braden jones looks?
I was there on Day 1 of camp and he didn't stand out, but the big sleeper from the TE position is Kleinsasser! I have heard nothing but good things about his hands so far and with everyone focusing on Shiancoe, Jimmy is under the radar. Read in today's Star Trib (or Pioneer Press - don't remember which one) that he has been getting a TON of red zone looks so far, so he could be a good bye week TE that could be had VERY late.

Chiefs' Edwards cuts practice short after skirmish

"Everybody had short fuses tonight, and you can anticipate that kind of stuff," Edwards said of the scuffle that broke out between members of the Minnesota defense and the Kansas City offense about 75 minutes into the evening. "One thing leads to another, and you know whats going to happen."

Thats why the Chiefs head coach put an end to Saturdays practice 45 minutes earlier than anticipated. Edwards said the players on both teams were worn out after several days of training camp followed by a pair of physical scrimmages between Kansas City and Minnesota on Friday and Saturday.
http://www.wctrib.com/ap/index.cfm?page=vi...277512a4e616443some positivity......

the Vikings offense showed significant improvement compared to Friday night's scrimmage. The offensive line protected well, allowing quarterbacks ample time in the pocket. The running backs also did a better job blocking and picking up blitzes. But most importantly, Brooks Bollinger and Tarvaris Jackson showed more poise in the passing game.
The second team offense cleared some nice holes on the left side (LT Chase Johnson, LG Brian Daniels) for Artose Pinner and Mewelde Moore. The Vikings second team offensive line thoroughly dominated the Chiefs during 7-on-7 running plays. During 11-on-11 practice on the side field, the first team offensive line did an excellent job in pass protection, especially compared to Friday night. Tarvaris Jackson and Brooks Bollinger had plenty of time to scan for open targets.
Tarvaris Jackson threaded the needle to Justin Surrency along the sideline, who made the catch for a six yard gain. Surrency has made a handful of impressive catches during the two scrimmages. You can now officially consider Surrency as a dark horse to make the team.
Along with displaying the speed and cutting ability that made him the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, Peterson excelled Saturday catching passes out of the backfield, snagging everything thrown his way and turning some short completions into big gains against the Chiefs' defense.

"He's been really good catching the ball, better actually than what I'd heard about him coming out of college," said Vikings offensive lineman Marcus Johnson. "Hes doing all the things you need to do to become a special player. You watch Adrian Peterson play, you see that speed, and you know he has a bright future."

Andy - do you see one of them getting more goal line carries than the other? TIA

Every time I hear Martin Nance's name mentioned in the camp reports, it's becuase he caught another nice ball, usually in the end zone.

I really think he's a deeep sleeper with the potential for more. But that's just a gut feeling.

He's from "The U" so you know he has the right pedigree. :loco:

cnnsi camp article, (peter king) I'll post the jackson part...

Camp Confidential

So everyone wants to know: How's Tarvaris Jackson doing?

My answer: We won't know until he gets in a few series against first-team defenses in preseason games, but here's my scouting report:

Arm: Very good. In fact, his spiral most often zips from here to there with no wavering at all. His velocity is above-average, miles better than his competitor for the starting job, Brooks Bollinger. Very noticeable.

Release: Quick, decisive.

Confidence in the pocket: Still developing. You can tell his mind's working a mile a minute, trying to process who's open while the rush is in his face. Good thing for him that he's dealing with a front seven that's going to challenge him in camp.

Accuracy: Shaky. He overthrew a couple of open receivers this morning. I noticed in a practice against the Chiefs on Saturday night that he sometimes throws too fast a fastball on short throws. He needs to be a better touch thrower.

Work ethic: Seems good. Childress told me he came back to Minnesota early, before the start of the offseason program, and took extra throwing time with his receivers. (This is what Childress wanted from Daunte Culpepper before last season -- but the veteran QB was unwilling to work in Minnesota when he was rehabbing from knee surgery.)

I like Jackson more today than I did before I saw him this weekend. I can see why Childress fell in love with him before the 2006 draft. He's a yes-sir, no-sir, bright guy, a quiet guy who wants to soak up knowledge. After practice this morning, he talked to me, then went back to the practice field to throw with a couple of rookie receivers for 20 minutes. They were the only Vikings left on the field. I've got a good feeling about Jackson, but having a good feeling about a guy is no guarantee he'll succeed. There's no doubt he'll take his lumps if, as I anticipate, he beats out Bollinger for the starting job.

The Vikes punking the Chefs in scrimage again I was reading earlier. This caused the Chefs to end scrimage 45 minutes early. Wussies.

Didn't we hear a lot about Hank Baskett a year ago too, yet we traded him away. :unsure:Is it just me or do we have a lot more nicks and bruises this year with a lot of players missing PT? For those who were in camp last year and this year, is Childress working them harder this year?

From everything I have heard, he is much "easier" on them than he was last year. I read a quote from Birk that was something like this: "we still aren't Club Med like some teams but it is better than last year."

I think I need a :hophead: as I am really looking forward to watching the first quarter or so of tonights game.

How's TJ looking?

Does AP play and if so in what capacity?

How's our  new TE looking?

TW.. Eye problem solved or is there more to it than just the eyes?

Any other WR's stepping up or is it a hodgepodge of junk running around?

Can the DL get pressure on the QB or are we in for another long season of the non-existent Pass defense?

Right side of the OL.. Is it going to be a plug as we go or do we have players stepping up?

I know there is no way in hell I'll get all the answers from 1 quarter of work but it will be a start.

I am right there with you on all those. If jackson comes out and is missing guys by 5-10 yards like alot of the camp reports I've read I'll be doing some of this  , I don't care if its preseason he needs to come out and show he can play against some first stringers. He is the main guy I am excited about watching.

Wasn't Basket traded before training camp even started last year? I think it was after mini-camps and I don't remember hearing much of anything about him last year before the trade.

I like all the enthusiasm and chatter in here, but I think we all have to prepare ourselves for one of the worst seasons in history. We might not win a game fellas.

My brother and my Dad already yelled at me for this opinion, but I dont care, this will be a horrible season.

There I said it, and no, I don't feel better.

As much as I hate to admit it, that is a definate possibility. However, with the defense and running game, I think we will win at least 4 games. I would be extremely happy if we finished 8-8.Shoot, I'd be happy if we went 4-12 as long as we beat the Bears and Packers.

Especially excited about the first preseason game for a few reasons:

1. See Peterson play (hopefully).

2. Watch Greenway (really excited about him).

3. It will be interesting to watch all four quarters because our #1 WR could end up playing in the 4th quarter.

I posted this in the game thread too, along with some other stuff as I was at the game, but I wanted this noted here too...

Tyler Thigpen has a gun! He was 3/6, but had two drops that I can recall. He looked so much better than Bollinger. I am now convinced that Drew Hensen is gone. Watching Thigpen in person really impressed me.

Props goes out to Bloom and Lammey who called out Thigpen's talent when the Vikings drafted him.

Worst than Steckle era?? :goodposting: The defense alone is worth 4-5 wins.. Add in chester/AP combo and I still see 7 as a good season. I do see a 5 game stretch where IF they get 1 win out of there I'd be downright  'd

Sep 9 Atlanta 1:00pm Win - no Vick, and Dunn limited

Sep 16 @Detroit 4:05pm unknown

Sep 23 @Kansas City 1:00pm UnknownNo LJ and who at QB??

Sep 30 Green Bay 1:00pm Win

Week 5 BYE 2-2 with a 3-1 record at Bye NOT out of the question.

Oct 14 @Chicago 1:00pm Loss

Oct 21 @Dallas 1:00pm Loss

Oct 28 Philadelphia 1:00pm Unknown

Nov 4 San Diego 1:00pm Loss

Nov 11 @Green Bay 1:00pm Loss

Nov 18 Oakland 1:00pm Win

Nov 25 @N.Y. Giants 1:00pm Win

Dec 2 Detroit 1:00pm Win

Dec 9 @San Francisco 4:05pm Loss

Dec 17 Chicago 8:30pm Loss

Dec 23 Washington 1:00pm Win

Dec 30 @Denver 4:15pm unknown -Denver may have locked up a playoff spot at this point and have nothing to play for at this point

So, if they lose the Unknowns in my list that gives them 6 wins.. Good possibility they can win one or two of the unknowns for a 7-8 game win season.

If Tarvaris plays as mistake free as a rookie can possibly play, with that Defense and the Running game, they should be able to keep it close in most of the games.

And  I am a  and proud of it. ;)

Worse than Les Steckle? Maybe. Steckle ran the team like the military, and our coach now is Major Dad, or, also known as that guy who married Delta Burke.

Snogger you're my man, but 7-8 wins? Put down the crack pipe, friend. Maybe, just maybe, we can beat Oakland.

We are going to stink it up this year.

They always play Chicago tough but will very likely lose both games barring a total Rex Grossman meltdown. They normally own Detroit but will likely split with them. Perhaps a split with GB as well. Have to figure they beat Oakland at home. I think they either win the Washington game or the road game in Denver (with Denver resting for the playoffs), just a hunch. That being said, if they don't beat Atlanta opening day, they might not win a game until November.

I see where you are coming from. But in my mind the offense was worst last year as Brad, although a nice guy, didn't put any scare at all into the defenses and the Pass defense wasn't top notch either. They actually had a chance to win a few of those games last year with no offense thanks to a pretty good defense. There were 4 games they lost that, had the offense shown any spark at all and scored a couple TD's, they could have won.I expect the Running game to be huge this year.. If Jackson throws more than 15 times a game the first 4-5 weeks I'd be :shock:The defense "should" be improved with E. James back, Greenway hopefully healed up. We know the Run Defense will be good, just need to get better rushing from the LB's and DE's to slow down the Passing. Vegas thinks 7 wins is a possibility.. I'll be happy with 6-7.. either way I'm in the minority of Viking fans as I am actually looking forward to this season. With little expectations the games will be enjoyable for me. Unlike last year where they started off pretty good and got us all hopefully only to end up :goodposting: .. I hate the term, but it is a rebuilding year and it should be fun to sit back and see if we have a :tfp: or a good base for next season..

This is a rebuilding year without question. We have new players at every skill position right now and it is going to take time for them to grow and for us to see what we can do on offense.

That being said I like how the team is being built. Strong defense and Oline are the priorities. Lets keep it that way and let the skill positions grow. Then once they develop we have somthing to play for. The Green era of great offense no defense proved to not be a winning formula when it mattered.

Save the doom and gloom Viking "fans" and look at the principles and foundation of the team.''

There is nothing in the bylaws of being a fan of a football team that says you cannot be pesimistic and preach doom and gloom. I think 3-4 wins this year. Am I looking forward to the record at the end of the season? No. Am I still going to cheer, watch, and be depressed when they lose? Absolutely! I think this is going to be a much more painful year than many of you think.

I think they are building a good foundation...unfortunately, I think that the defense will not handle the rebuilding and stay strong for years to come. P. Williams won't be around next year. Sharper is on his last leg. D. Smith is not a saftey to build around. The LBs are young and somewhat talented, but what do we really know about Greenway and EJ in the middle? The D-Line beyond the Williams wall is an unknown at this point.

I am doom and gloom now and I am worried about the way the D in the future. I like what they are doing offensively in rebuilding.

I still think Chilldress is fired at season's end. Just my humble opinions.

WOW.. See, this season will be the first in a VERY VERY Long time, that my expectations are so low that I won't have that "down" feeling I usually have the Monday after a game. Of course I'll be cheering and at times throwing my Foam viking brick at the T.V. but... Win, lose, lose bad doesn't matter to me this year. This is a rebuilding year. I 'm looking forward to seeing what the rookies and the 2nd year players have for the future.

All right, I can believe as high as 6 wins. If they don't win against Atlanta, Oakland, and NYG, they better shut down Winter Park. There should be another 3 wins somewhere in the remaining 13 games.

Which means they'll probably pick 7th again next year.

 :hifive: :goodposting:6-7 wins, with that defense and the Running backs is not that hard to believe.

Any chance Tavaris Jackson is the surprise fantasy player of the year? He might be the fastest starting QB in the league with Vick likely out for the year

No. There is a misconception that Tarvaris is a scrambler. He's athletic, but he's much more of a pocket passer than people realize.
